Ouch!

And people complain about salaries on the bottom end of the UFC’s roster…

That figure is so out of line from the other salaries, and he is a semi-decent prospect, something doesn’t seem right

I'm sure Daniel Cormier makes more than $500.

A sure sign that there is some sort of back room deal is that he receives no win bonus. That being said, these guys are getting shit. Lets hope that competition between Strikeforce, Zuffa, Shine, Bellator, MFC and foreign promotions drives up wages enough so that main card competitors can make a living wage fighting. Maybe something along the lines of 12K to show and 8K to win?

He might’ve received a signing bonus, a salary, or a housing allowance in addition to his purse. I don’t even know if the purse covers the licensing fees.

People forget that these are just disclosed salaries for the event, not other bonuses that promotions frequently pay fighters.

Yes these numbers don’t tell the whole story of what guys make they are just the athletic commission numbers. We just don’t know what fighters actually make.

Still even if these numbers are only part of a story a total disclosed payroll of $73,000 is pretty sad for a televised event (even a Challengers level one). I doubt Strikeforce is doubling everyone’s reported pay behind the scenes, and even if you did double these numbers it’s not that good.

I would like to see these fighters get paid more, but what can they really do about it? I am playing more of the devil’s advocate here, but If they go back to the regional circuit, they probably get paid less, and may not get the same sponsors because they wouldn’t be on television or under contract to one of the bigger MMA organizations in Strikeforce. I can’t imagine that the ratings are that good for Strikeforce Challengers, and it’s on a premium cable channel which gets low penetration. In one sense, these fighters are lucky to have a platform to be on television yet be a lower/prospect level fighter. As much as I’d like to see these fighters get paid more, I have to be realistic here.

For some of these fighters that would hold true but for some of them they might as well been on the local circuit. It’s just not going to be good pay to be on a challenger’s card but for a event broadcast on national tv this is low, heck even for challenger’s series cards the last two have been pretty low by comparison to last years.

by who me on Mar 30, 2010 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

The only difference would be that they are on television, if they are on the main card, which I would assume would get them better sponsorship money. I would also assume that fighting for Strikeforce would get them better sponsorship money than fighting at the local circuit. Outside of the sponsorship money, the pay does suck.

shouldn’t they?

by David_ on Mar 30, 2010 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions

They have the right to. But from past comments against the ufc’s salaries, you would think the ufc had the lowest pay in the sport. Clearly that is not the case.
