My winner picks... Oddly mostly on the left.
Main Bouts:
Kenny Florian (12-4) vs. Takanori Gomi (31-5)
Roy Nelson (14-4) vs. Stefan Struve (19-3)
Nate Quarry (12-3) vs. Jorge Rivera (17-7)
Ross Pearson (10-3) vs. Dennis Siver (15-6)
Preliminary Bouts:
Andre Winner (10-3-1) vs. Rafaello Oliveira (10-2)
Ronys Torres (18-2) vs. Jacob Volkmann (9-2)
Nik Lentz (17-3-2) vs. Rob Emerson (9-8)
Gleison Tibau (20-6) vs. Caol Uno (25-12-5) Draw
Yushin Okami (23-5) vs. Lucio Linhares (13-5)
Gerald Harris (14-2) vs. Mario Miranda (11-0)
Jason High (9-2) vs. Charlie Brenneman (11-1)
I like all those but am leaning towards Siver and Volkmann.. Tibau/Uno draw? I wonder what kind of odds you can get on that!

If Uno gets another draw
I think he deserves some kind of honorary award or something. The Caol Uno Sister-Kissing Medal of Achievement.
My thoughts on Tibau / Uno are:
Tibau comes out strong and does well in the first round. He is a beast and a powerhouse, but he also gasses and can fight sloppy.
The second round will be harder to call. Tibau will have slowed down and may be completely nullified or recieve a point deduction, who knows, but Uno will probably figured him out and will be in control. Control for Uno = do next to nothing, Uno is the master of the 10 – 10 round after all… One of the last two rounds will be 10 – 10 and Uno will win the other,
Tibau is going to try to put his fist through Uno’s face. That’s been the story for him in the lead-up, and he’s apparently been working heavily on his striking. Uno is pretty quick, so this could get interesting if Uno can take him down on the counter and control.

Tibau would have had to do major work on his striking for that strategy to pay off.
It isn’t like he was almost there…
One way or another I think Tibau’s size and strength will win him a round and may be enough for a stalemate in the second. Even if it is a bit of a dozer, I am still interested Uno is sometimes a boring fighter, but I do find a beauty in his game..
Tibau stated he trained almost entirely stand-up, and he’s been at it for quite a long time. We’ll see. I doubt it’ll be vastly better, but Uno can be a surprise in the striking department. He might actually counter Tibau’s misses.

Renzo said
something a lot the lines of
‘Other sports you only need one ball to play. Our sport, you need two of them. And they better be made of steel’
Or something along those lines.
I hate that.
I really hate the “big balls needed” “X-games” style shit.

Well…for one. I don’t think you need “bigger balls” to compete in MMA than you do boxing, or football, or soccer, or baseball. But I know that’s just going to piss people off.
For another it’s just such an x-games style quote.

Soccer and baseball are non contacts sports and relatively safe, soccer hooligans aside...
They are a completely different ball game (no pun intended) than any combat or even contact sports. Some people just don’t have what it take for contacts sports. That is a fact. “Bigger balls” is just a fun way to say it.
Soccer is very rough – how can you say it’s not a contact sport?

Soccer is actually extremely physical. I’d say it depends exactly on how we’re defining “what it takes.” I meet men on a regular basis at regional MMA events who I don’t think are particularly ballsy or awesome but they’ve had 12 career fights.
Getting up in the 9th inning of a baseball game in a tie game and being expected to perform arguably the hardest feat in sports by hitting a ball with movement and speed on it with a bat in front of a huge crowd takes just as much in the “balls” department to me as someone being willing to get punched in the face.
Not to mention that you’re at risk of getting drilled in the head by a 90+ MPH fastball David Wright style when batting or taking one to the head Hiroki Kuroda style.

I'm not really convinced
When you start a soccer or a baseball game, you’re not expecting broken bones, deep cuts and concussions. It can happen but they are freak injuries. When you enter a ring (or an octagon), you kinda know it’s part of the game, their is a high percentage of chances you’re gonna get messed up to achieve victory. And if you’re an infighter and you face a good outboxer that ess you up with jabs, you accept to take a punishment just to land a body blow…
I don’t know. I respect every sports, I respect curling players, but I just can’t put boxing and soccer in the same category as far as courage…guts goes.
I'm a lover not a fighter
There are lots of people who won't play football, etc. because they don't like hitting and getting hit.
Same would be said about combat sports or the large number of people who quit hockey when they are old enough for hitting.
It is a different mind set or mentality that people have. You can call it anything, it doesn’t have to be “balls”. I am not saying there is anything less credible about any other kind of athlete. I am jusat saying contact sports require a different mind set. Some may call it “balls”, some may even call it “stupid”. If you are denying that there is a difference in mindset, I think you are wrong.
Coming out in the 9th inning to hit a ball is a nerves thing, that is there in every single kind of competition. Even in golf and badminton…
My whole point is just that I don’t really think it takes a special courage to fight. I love this sport (obviously) but I don’t think it requires an insane amount of guts. Whatever. It’s kind of pointless to continue the discussion on this topic at this point.

Soccer has one of the highest percentage of injuries
by dancingChicken on Mar 30, 2010 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Difference is
When you’re playing soccer, you go in knowing (generally speaking) that nobody has the intention of hurting you.
With combat, it’s very different.
With one, damage to the body is the collateral, but with combat it’s the whole point.
You got rugby and what you call football, pure contact sports, hurting is part of the game.
I'm a lover not a fighter
I don't call it football
I’m not American =p. Football is football, I just said soccer for ease of communication.
Rugby/US Football – again, yes, hurting is part of the game but not the intention. A guy trying to stop some guy running for the touchdown or tri isn’t going to keep chasing him to knock his ass over if that guy drops the ball..
On the other hand, with combat sports you know that it is necessary to protect yourself at all times, whereas you don’t step into the batters’ box expecting to take a heater off your squash. Courage is a very relative concept as it applies to sports and you could make a case for the amount needed to compete in everything from MMA to football to polo.
Soccer and baseball are non contacts sports and relatively safe, soccer hooligans aside…
Soccer is different that rugby and American football, but it’s still very physical and not relatively safe. I’m not implying that it’s similar to combat sports.

That’s only three fights ago.
Hard to get him back on the main card consistently after that UFC 72 disaster where he was the headliner.
Sig bet record: 1-0.
I personally
don’t think they were really pushing Okami that well. They were really expecting Franklin to sell more I guess… but yeah Japanese guy with no English skills likely would be a tough sell especially if no one sees his fights.

Struve
needs to go train his striking in Holland for a year
Then work with Eddie Bravo for a year
Then he will win all the prizes
He needs to grow a set and stop being scared to strike. I’m sure confidence in his defense would help as well, but he just has horrid defense.

That's the problem.
Nelson is alway going to avoid camps because a) he’s succeeded without them and b) he doesn’t want to have people telling him what to do. Even if/when he gets blown out of the water by somebody, he’ll still justify training out of his house because that’s what he’s comfortable with. Sad to see his potential squandered out of stubbornness, but it is what it is.

I imagine Kenny will employ a gameplan to avoid striking altogether. Gomi used to be a precision wrecking machine. He’d land straight lefts and follow with devastatingly accurate rights and so on. The surprising part is that he hasn’t really lost that. He just lost the speed and strength from being lazy over the last couple of years.
If he can actually stifle Kenny from taking him down, Kenny could be in trouble in on the feet from one combination. I think Kenny is strong enough to get this to the ground unfortunately though.

I’ll never forget when I was at Pride Bushido 3 and saw him ko Ralph Gracie in like 7 seconds with a knee. That isn’t the memorable part though, the fighter videos before the intro were crazy. They showed Ralp Gracie training, beating people up etc, and then they cut to Gomi’s video and it is him in a classroom with little kids and playing around with them. It was so obviously portrayed as this tough foreign guy is here to try to destroy our kind hearted hero who enjoys teaching little children in his free time

Nothing against Florian, but I want Gomi to absolutely destroy him. It will add new life to a division that is suffering from the ‘super-dominant-champion’ syndrome.

I think he’s awesome, big heart, down to earth guy who’s fighting a weight above what he should be..
But I would MUCH rather Penn be the champ than Edgar. Penn is just really fucking fun to watch, he’s crazy technical AND puts a major hurting on most guys.
