Dana White on James Toney: "We Won't Make a Freak Show Out of It"

While Dana White's plans for the newly signed fighter, James Toney hasn't been finalized yet, he insists that he didn't get him to be involved in 'freak show' fights:

James_toney_and_dana_white_at_ufc_108__150_dpi_2__240x230_20100105_medium

"We threw the kitchen sink at Brock when he came in. Are we going to do that same thing with James? I don’t know. To be 100 percent honest with you, all [expletive] aside, I haven’t thought it out."

"I like James Toney. He’s one of the greatest boxers ever. I have tremendous respect for him. He said he wanted to fight in the UFC and I was interested. Now he’s here and I have to figure out what to do with him. What we won’t do is make a freak show out of it. I’d be the first to scream if someone else did that, so I’m not going to do it."

"Hey, I don’t want this to be seen as a joke, and it’s not like Herschel Walker or Canseco or any of those guys. James Toney is a fighter. The worst thing anyone can ever say to me is that they were watching one of my fights and they changed the channel. That’s why I’ll never put [expletive] fights on."

"James is an interesting case. We know how much talent he has as a boxer and he insists he’ll surprise people by how much MMA he knows. I’ve still got some thinking to do. But if we promote him and he does well and that raises his profile and he gets a Klitschko fight and makes a lot of money for himself and Goossen, I’d be cool with that. But James came to me and he literally chased me around the country to do it, so I’m giving him the chance. We’ll get it figured out one way or another."

Dana, who confirmed that Toney will still be allowed to box, also shared a tidbit about Strikeforce being in talks with the 41-year-old boxer prior to the signing:

"We’ll figure something out. I’m not really sure. Here’s the thing with James: We were sitting around finishing the deal and talking and he told me that he’d been talking to Strikeforce. He said they were talking to him about a fight with Herschel Walker. James said to me, ‘Do you know what I’d do to that [expletive]?’ He looked at me and said, ‘You know, I have a lot of pride and I’d never do anything to embarrass myself. I’m a fighter. I want to fight. And don’t ever underestimate me.’ "

UPDATE - James Toney comments on signing with the UFC, says boxing is still his main focus:

“Don’t make wise cracks about my weight, because I’ve been working hard and the next time you see me, you’ll be shocked. Dana put his foot in his mouth and said UFC guys are better fighters than boxers. We’ll see. Everyone who knows anything about fighting knows I’m the purest fighter in the game. There ain’t no secrets."

“I’ve been fighting a long time. I was born fighting. I know what I’m doing. Boxing is still my main focus, but them guys are a bunch of (expletives) and they don’t want to fight. So I called Dana after he put his foot in his mouth and I’m going to prove he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”

James Toney is still a less of a freak show signing then walker and canseco. He was former hw champion of the world. Not that means shit entering MMA at 41 but if people were ok with walker doing it then they shouldn’t have a problem with Tony. He is more qualified

While there are some that had no problem with Walker doing MMA, there was a large contingent of fans that did take issue with it, and still do. If I were to make a guess as to who Toney will fight, it will probably be the winner of Kimbo vs Mitrione, or they might just give him Kimbo. Stylistically, skillwise, experience-wise, and name-wise, those are the only two fighters who would make sense for Toney.
KIMBO SLICE VS JAMES TONEY WILL BE HUGE!!

Its funny

that Herschel Walker and Jose Canseco have become any kind of measuring stick… even funnier that Dana himself is using it.

Dana always delivers promoter speak.
“Hey, I don’t want this to be seen as a joke, and it’s not like Herschel Walker or Canseco or any of those guys. James Toney is a fighter. The worst thing anyone can ever say to me is that they were watching one of my fights and they changed the channel. That’s why I’ll never put [expletive] fights on.”

Really, Herschel Walker was a freak show or an idea that Dana saw work and smartly leached onto?

I’m glad you realize it. Too many people I read on here think UFC never took this approach.

by bignerd on Mar 3, 2010 10:20 PM EST up reply actions

Pride were master’s of it, the UFC has at least stayed away from regular celebrities but they aren’t above celebrity fighters. Heck one is holding their heavyweight belt now (just because he worked out so well in MMA doesn’t change what he came in as). I don’t see the UFC ever using guys like Conseco or Walker in the promotion but a fighter is a fighter to them(see Gracie vs Hughes or Ken Shamrock’s vs Tito which they did three times or Kimbo Slice on TUF). James Toney in MMA is a joke but he is a professional prize fighter at least, it’s a different kind of fighting for him but it’s not like he’s a stranger to fighting for money on a professional level.

by who me on Mar 3, 2010 10:36 PM EST up reply actions

Hey, as long as we never see...

Danny Bonaducci fighting DMX…
or Jose Canseco fighting a guy with NO arms and NO legs…
ITs all good…
The thing that IS confusing is that EVERYONE KNOWS that the UFC has the BEST of all the fighters from all over the world…You can argue that a few fighters are not in the UFC YET! but everyone knows that the UFC does stuff the right way…
Fans can sometimes be confused when they see Kimbo Slice fighting, but only fighting Matt Mitrione and not Brock Lesnar…
Kimbo is for marketing purposes…Kimbo will never beat a slightly below average fighter in the UFC…He is not good and has NO power. Meathead will KO him in the first round…

That dude has done SO much for UFC/SpIKE…

Why not have Kimbo?? Dana is not going to promote him as the BEST fighter in the world or even a good fighter…
The bottom line is that Kimbo is going to make a whole lot more money than his fighting skills are worth…
Dana is not going to make the right business decision in this situation…
I am sure that DAna is not going to feed him to the Lions like what he did with Brock/Werdum/DoSsantos…
Dana will probably have Toney fight Antoni Hardonk or a TUF 10 Castoff…
If He doesnt win fights or bring viewer attention…
Dana will Cut his A$$ in a second…
Why would Dana sacrafice the integrity of his product??

by Jadrig on Mar 4, 2010 3:10 AM EST up reply actions

I think it worked out better than most think. Dana was already pissed after the Herschel fight about how much publicity it got. It wasn’t that he was a Celebrity as much as a HUGE named athlete taking his shot at MMA, just like he got a lot of press when he was on the Bobsled Team…and Herschel got A LOT of coverage on news outlets for his fight.
Maybe Dana wants to play on that a bit with having a pretty big name boxer coming over to fight MMA…lots of angles on that one.

So…if it didn’t work out, them why was Dana bitching about all the publicity it got???

so here is the thing-

if he is serious he needs to get close to 205 and fight there against some more striker based fighters. He needs to learn some TD defence and he needs to have good cardio.

If he is making good money, then they will throw him in the deep end, T.Silva or Rampage? if not then cro cop, kongo, berry or a wrestler?

by Beren on Mar 3, 2010 9:45 PM EST reply actions

Kongo would be a good match up. Kongo is fairly relevant but out of title contention. No ground game either. More than Toney though id asume.

If they are paying him good money it means they are going to plot a path that maximizes their return of investment.

They will schedule an easy initial opponent that will also garner a lot of intrigue and sales (possibly Kimbo). Based on his performance they will chart out a PPV and opponent that will sell the best.

Dropping him into the deep end to see him sink is an awful business proposal.

Toney could probably make 205lbs but he’d get eaten up by the light heavyweight talent. Heavyweight is still thin enough that he could get some competitive match ups, not to mention that heavyweight is loaded with stand up fighters.

The amount of attention we are giving it is what’s silly. A former boxing champ, who Dana is a huge fanboy of, is going to try his hand in the Octagon. As long as they don’t go the Gracie vs Hughes route, and overhype the shit out of his fights I have no problem with it. Give him a lower level UFC HW (no Kimbo!) and lets see what he can do. I’m predicting failure, but I am also hoping he’ll prove me wrong.

by John Nash on Mar 3, 2010 10:44 PM EST up reply actions

If that is the case then expect him to draw Big Country for his first fight. Being crucifixed by a fat man would do the trick. Still we shouldn’t forget that Dana White came from a boxing background and is a huge fan of boxing the sport (his issue with boxing is the promoters not the actual sport).

by who me on Mar 3, 2010 10:40 PM EST up reply actions

Very true, but the way I look at is, James Toney has been calling Dana out on what seems like a daily basis, calling out fighters, so Dana says ok, here is your money, go fight this guy, and then hopefully Nelson does get a crack at him and lays on him. Although, that would be alot of fat between the 2 of them.

1. The quarterstaff is a highly effective martial art. It’s called “The Grandfather of all Weapons” in China for a reason.

2. Authentic Renaissance fencing is badass. Modern fencing is it’s gelded version. I think of it like boxing.

3. Grappling in full armor was a necessary art of war in both Eastern and Western warfare.

4. Pommel horse is a martial art? Really? Why? It shouldn’t be – where’s the combat?

Hardonk is not highly ranked but he has been in the UFC for awhile and scored a couple of wins. “I’m not going to stand and throw sissy punches, puches is fo’ gayz and shit, I mean why he be all trying to touch my face?”

BJJ guys just tend to sit still and smile a bit when confronted with that type of “grapplin is ghey an shit” talk because they know what they can do.

And Chael said he doesn’t let another man lay in his guard, obviously Toney can’t be completely retarded and recognizes the fact he would have to go through the proper measures for preventing himself from being taken down and if he does learn a way to at least get back up.

I doubt it has anything to do with TOney..

If they’re changing it, it’s probably cause they’ll use it to counter Strikeforce/CBS

by Anton Tabuena on Mar 3, 2010 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

Are they really going to counter the CBS card? No one else is reporting that rumor and the fan posts have been taken down.

This quote from Toney makes me think even more that Dana is out to prove a point that MMA fighters are more well rounded and better than boxers.

I told you not to f*ck with me.

by Romoesbueno on Mar 3, 2010 11:08 PM EST up reply actions

Dana, who confirmed that Toney will still be allowed to box…

This is interesting. Maybe there’s room for other guys to do more ADCC, Sambo (wink), etc…

by Postpubescent on Mar 3, 2010 11:04 PM EST reply actions

The last time they negotiated with Fedor Dana said sambo wasn’t a problem and they could work something out.

by ufc4 on Mar 3, 2010 11:06 PM EST up reply actions

Nobody seems to want to box Toney

so I doubt it’ll be an issue. It is interesting though.

by Trysdor on Mar 3, 2010 11:06 PM EST up reply actions

He barely beat Danny Bacheler. He won by split decision. Then after the fight he got busted for steroids. He isn’t deserving of big fights in boxing.

by MMAfan4242 on Mar 4, 2010 12:18 AM EST up reply actions

I believe you are correct. GSP was planning on competing at ADCC this year until he got hurt in the fight with Alves.

by Worldisart on Mar 3, 2010 11:15 PM EST up reply actions

I thought Dana blocked Nate and Maia from competing. There were rumors Urijah was going to as well and then he didn’t, so that could have been Zuffa.

The man known simply as "Christmas Cheesesteak"

by Neil Manich on Mar 3, 2010 11:29 PM EST up reply actions

Demian was not barred from it.

He had just come off a fight and didn’t feel he had time to prepare for ADCC appropriately. And Urijah was announced as “invited” but that was it. ADCC loves announcing a roster of dudes they invited, not the guys that accepted the invite.

And as Anton just said, a WEC fighter was in ADCC this year. SoCal native Rani Yahya if I’m not mistaken.

No worries

glad to bring something useful to the discussion for a change.

And to add, I’m pretty sure that the fighters need to get permission from their promoters to compete, be it Reed Harris or Dana White. The stories I’ve heard are that for grappling tourneys like ADCC, it’s not too tough to get the go-ahead.

I don’t think they care as much about Toney doing boxing fights on the side than if GSP decided to do K-1.

This dude is crazy.

Says he won’t watch Vitor, Barnett, Marquardt, Sherk, Royce, Sylvia, Monson, Randleman Cole Province, Bonnar, Leben, Baroni, Franca, Hallman, or Bigfoot. Because they are “cheaters” and don’t deserve anything, apparently.

by MMAfan4242 on Mar 4, 2010 12:29 AM EST up reply actions

Oh, you mean the fights that got overturned?

Or, how about the fact that out of 29 busts in MMA history, the dirty party lost 19 of those fights? So, steroid users lose 65% of the time. Cheaters with an unfair advantage!

what about the time you said
I see a bunch of steroid users in the UFC also. It obvious when you look at Lesnar, Carwin, Cyborg, Manhoef, Duffee, etc. Clearly testing needs to be addressed because a lot of fighters are still getting away with it.

that was my favorite comment of the week.

by Anton Tabuena on Mar 4, 2010 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

Hey Ant,

It would be that his dick looks bigger because his nuts are so small…testes produce testosterone…If you are getting testosterone injected into your body, your body no longer needs to produce it…

I never said visual tests are the way to tell if someone is on steroids but there are some guys I look at and say yea he is on the juice. That is my opinion. As a fan I can tune in and choose to watch who I want.

by MMAfan4242 on Mar 4, 2010 1:02 AM EST up reply actions

That is your opinion, and your opinion fails several tests of logic, reasonability, grounding, and basic sensibility. In short, you have an opinion, you are allowed to have an opinion, and your opinion makes you look pretty thick.

Method to Dana's madness,,,,,,,,,

Look people……. Dana let that BIG mouth douchebag into the UFC for a reason. To teach that fat bastard a lesson!! Toney’s been talking alot of trash on the net making video blogs calling out Dana and saying he’s scared to let him in the UFC. Ok Toney…….Dana has granted your wish now the pain shall begin for you because Dana is going to match you up with real fighters. Let’s see there’s Brock , Lidell, Couture, I even dare to say Ortiz. and I don’t like Ortiz because he sucks. But he can beat Toney. I can’t wait to see the after fight interviews with toney when he loses every fight in his short UFC career. Toney will be humbled by the time he is fired by DANA!! Can’t wait!!
