UFC Fight Night 21: Kenny Florian Talks Takanori Gomi, Roy Nelson Talks Stefan Struve

"I'm sure [Takanori Gomi] he's going to be coming out hard, and try to make a name for himself right off the bat in this organization. I can't have that.'
"I don't mean this in a cocky way, but he's going to have to respect me a lot more. I'm not sure he really knows what he's dealing with," said Florian. "I'm not sure if he's been following the UFC, or following my career or whatever, and he definitely doesn't know what I've been up to in the last few months, but I feel like if he doesn't come with his ‘A’ game, and if he feels like he's the senior guy, or that he's the legend, and he doesn't respect me, I think he'll be out of there pretty quick."
"[Struve] He has more experience but I think my age can make a difference."
"Just having that extra bit of life experience definitely helps as a fighter," he says. "I’m a lot smarter now than I was then. Except physically, I still haven’t grown into my body yet." Ba-dum-bum.
"I really don’t do camps [Roy Nelson still trains from home, aka "The Country Club."]," he says. "I just train an hour and a half a day, six days a week. Some guys go twice a day, but that doesn’t mean they’re doing more. They’re taking it easy and pacing themselves, whereas I go all out."
-- Big Country -325 says he has nothing but respectful words for Stefan Struve +250.

It is too bad that Roy won't join a camp or take his training seriously...
He might be a decent middleweight if he was in shape. As is, I guess he presents an intersting matchup at HW.
Pretty much. The guys hands are mediocre at best, and black belt or not, rolling at home with your Rottweiler isn’t going to keep you sharp.
The guys ego is preventing him from reching his potential. He beat Mir in BJJ competition—how is he still so low on the totem pole?
Sure glad Lesnar got his shit straightened out.

He has decent hands, but they could be better.
Like you said he is holding himself back… If he put in full time camps with good fighters, he could be very good instead of just okay… It is a shame to see wasted potential.
What do you mean "if he was in shape"....
ROUND is a shape….

The charisma is overwhelming with all four of these fighters
UFN 21 Great gate keeper battles. Gomi is the only one I really am excited about. I think it is more of a question as to which Gomi will we see. Florian will be a good test to see if he can hang. None of the other fighters can challenge at the top right now.IMO
Nobody can challenge Penn, but I think Florian is a beast in his own right and would beat any other LW put infront of him.
The UFC should start a LW T.V. title...
so Florian can have a belt.
He is champion caliber, its just too bad the guy with the belt is more than a hair better than that.

If Penn is serious about moving up and vacates his title, it will be Kenny's title to lose.
It will also create an interesting scenario down the line if Penn falters at WW. He could drop back down and try to take the title back from whoever holds it.
What does training at home consist of?
“Ok, today we’re gonna hit the heavy bag for 20 minutes, then roll for 30, followed by ‘lifting’ on the bowflex, and to finish I will swim 12 laps in my pool for cardio.”
I just don’t see how you can be competitive like that, but I guess that’s a testament to Roy Nelson. If he guy had Brock/Shane’s size and was in a legit camp how dominant would he be?

for Roy, rolling takes on a while new meaning
"For some reason Dana White doesn't like me, and I don't care enough to find out why. So he can go pound sand up his ass as far as I'm concerned."

It is a good workout if you can stay motivated. It is better than its competitors.
Not better than a good academy obviously.
Very difficult at first.

word of advice… don’t buy the protein shakes and stuff from them… the workout along with any good nutrition plan is just as good.
The workout is is basically Tabata training. Look it up.

is P90x
a good weight-loss/cardio, or is it mainly for building mass after you are already where you want to be regarding body fat ratio.
I'd say it's better for weight-loss/cardio
But you’ll build mass too. My brother has lost something like 18 pounds doing it for two months, I’ve gained about 10.
wow
18 pounds in two months. that’s pretty impressive. i just hate the thought of anything other than a actual workout program. pills/special food diets/shakes/etc… i just hate all that. i feel if you can’t lose it legitimately then you really aren’t gonna keep it off and then build lean muscle in addition. im excited about this!
Gomi’s loss to Kitaoka makes me wonder if he has improved his ground game since and what strategy is Kenny going to employ against the “fireball kid”. Will Florian use his kickboxing or is he going to try to go for takedowns and follow up with his famous razor sharp elbows?

Maybe he will hold him against the cage a leg hump him into submission

Florian is an interesting test
Kenny has a very homogenized style nothing too explosive but solid anywhere the fight can go. If Gomi wins he has a future. If he loses he is just like the other Japanese fighters in the roster, expendable. The same applies for Akiyama if he beats Wandy
Kenny has damaging striking and a very solid top game.
I don’t see him at a disadvantage unless Gomi is on top. I think training with Firaz at Trisatr has lit a new fire under Kenny. Even Penn said he’s seen improvement and considers him a legit threat.
I think BJ is just being gracious
He is a good fighter and seem like a very smart person. He seeks out new challenges and improves his game, I respect that hole heartedly but he is not in the top five. IMO
I would like to see a war and there is a strong possibility that could happen those UFN’s have had some great fights. This has all the makings.
What about Alvarez? He is the only other top lightweight that can challenge Kenny on the feet.
I think Kenny would beal Aoki, because Aoki wouldn’t score a takedown. Kenny is a top 5 striker at lightweight IMO.
Maynard’s strength / wrestling might be a threat, but I think Kenny has improved enough that it isn’t a major issue. Maynard is the only person who didn’t outwrestle Diaz, so he isn’t in consideration.
Melendez is no better than any other UFC wrestle boxer. Edgar / Griffin / Sherk / Maynard.
Edgar is too small… I reall like Edgar, but I think Kenny is too well rounded.
I would love to see Kenny/Sherk rematch to see how much he’s really grown. Actually I would like to see him fight all of the wrestle boxers u mentioned, those would all be good bouts and I think there’s a possibility he loses at least 3 of those. I’m not sold on his ability to beat a powerful wrestler, I know he beat guida but all these guys have better striking than guida.

Gomi is FUCKED
And it makes me sad. I will go nuts if he somehow pulls off an upset but somehow I feel that Kenny’s assessment is hitting the nail on the head. These Japanese fighters like Aoki seem to have an air of nationalistic hubris about them (well with Aoki it’s more than an air). It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see a Gomi who doesn’t take Kenny seriously.

I'd say Kenny is the #2 155er
of course opinion’s are like assholes

I was never impressed with kenflo
he might be the #2 in the ufc, and thats just because Diego moved up. LW is the ufc’s weakest division when you remove bj penn.
HI YAH!
by Thats It For you! on Mar 29, 2010 1:02 PM EDT reply actions
I disagree with you...
I think LW is one of the stronger divisions. Def stronger than MW. Probably still stonger than HW. I also think Ken Flo would beat Sanchez at LW.
I think lightweight is deep.
but it’s the same as middle and welter, there are no real contenders and it makes the fighter pool seem weak.
the reason there are no contenders
Is because the champions are so dominant. Three of the p4p best are holding the titles of course it’s gonna be difficult to find legit challengers no mater where they looked. Shields ain’t gonna be GSP or Silva and Penn could take Aoki easier than Melendez but that really not saying much.
