UFC 111 Results: Jim Miller Continues Jersey's Streak in Close Decision Over Mark Bocek

via i327.photobucket.com

Mark Bocek and Jim Miller put on an exciting ground war in front of Miller's hometown Jersey crowd.

Both fighters found themselves in deep trouble.  Miller latched on a kimura from half guard in round one, using it to sweet Bocek.  Miller held on to the hold and came close to submitting the black belt before Bocek regained guard.

In the last minute of the second round, Bocek trapped Miller and Miller's right arm in a tight body triangle.  Left with a single hand to defend, Miller gamely thwarted Bocek's attempts at a rear naked choke and me it to round three.

The third round didn't provide much separation after Miller and Bocek split the first two rounds.  Miller had the upper hand in the striking department, landing often while avoiding Bocek's returns.  Bocek fought back with takedowns and control on the floor.  A late takedown may have sealed the nod to Bocek, but Miller took control of his back to close out the round.

The judges ended up with three 29-28 scorecards for Jim Miller, giving Kurt Pellegrino the opportunity for the New Jersey sweep later in the night.

Good ground battle, Bocek impressed the heck out of me by putting Miller in some bad positions but as usual Jim’s scrappyness allowed him to pull this fight out. Now if only Dan can get back on track, the fighting Miller Brothers can make some more noise in the UFC.

To be honest, I thought Bocek got robbed here. I had it 29-28 Bocek.

Me too. I’m actually kinda shocked there isn’t more controversy here

I didn’t watch the fight closely enough to score it, but I think I would have given Bocek the nod as well.

Yea, it was a good back and forth battle but I was sure Bocek took at least two out of three rounds. That’s a controversial decision in my mind giving Miller the win. Although I supose its obscure enough that it won’t be as controversial as some recent fights.

I was very impressed with Bocek, the guys I watched the fight with all thought he won, and I agree.

Bocek won that fight. According to existing rules, dominating one round does not nullify losing the remaining two. I admit Miller did more damage overall, but Bocek controlled that fight.
