Pat Miletich (Rory Markham's trainer) said the weight-cutting process simply went "haywire":

Miletich said it's only the second time in 15 years one of his team members failed to make weight for an event.

The $1,000 represents 12.5 percent of Markham's purse ($8,000) and has been awarded to Diaz. Markham's potential win bonus – $8,000 – will not be affected.

Well maybe Miletich should have been in Jersey to oversee the cut...

… rather than in Fresno doing color on the Strikeforce card. That might have helped.

Yeah really. Although, it doesn’t look like Markham had anything to cut…he’s gotta lose muscle if he’s still trying to fight at 170.

The dude should make weight on his own while the coach is out making his own money. Sorry but failing to make weight is on the fighter.

Exactly what I was thinking, no one classed as a professional athlete should need to be coached to make weight.

And what exactly was Miletich meant to do to help Markham during the time he would have been in Jersey? Beyond giving him Liposuction himself, I can’t think of much.

by TheKeyboardWarrior on Mar 27, 2010 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Markham looked totally shredded at the weighins I cant imagine where he would have lost another 5 or 6 pounds.

1k isn’t shit. It almost seems calculated. Pretty ridiculous..

Was thinking the same thing

If my opponent was getting a 6 or 7 pound weight advantage then I’d want more than just $1,000 to make it right. I think 25% of his purse and 33% of any bonus (win or KO/sub) sounds fair. 1 or 2 pounds is one thing, 6 or 7 is a big deal.

by ufc4 on Mar 27, 2010 3:50 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Yep

This isn’t missing weight, this is a mid-way catch-weight for fuck’s sake. And against a guy that’s just coming up for the first time. Pretty harsh. Though Diaz will still tap him..

They should make them start the fight with Diaz in full mount.

by ufc4 on Mar 27, 2010 4:56 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

If Dana won't let Irvin cut to 185 anymore

he should’t let Markham cut to 170. First there was the collapsed lung he suffered while making the cut to fight Hardy at UFC 95, now this…just way too risky for him.

by Scott Haber on Mar 27, 2010 3:05 PM EDT reply actions

I have to agree..looking at those pictures its not readily apparant where Markham would find another six pounds to cut. If he’s put on that sort of muscle mass, the guy is just going to have to fight at 185 or figure out how to train so as to make the weight cut doable.

by ChrisBat on Mar 27, 2010 3:19 PM EDT reply actions

I have a feeling I’d Rory loses here, he is cut

by kanodogg on Mar 27, 2010 3:59 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I hate this

I agree that the purse penalty should be larger. Or fighters should decline to fight an overweight opponent. Short term suckage, but in the long term it would ensure that this happens less.

by Thor77 on Mar 27, 2010 4:04 PM EDT reply actions

i also agree the purse penalty should be larger, but it’s not like this is a highly frequent problem that needs to ‘happen less’, certainly not 7 pounds.

by Stillberry on Mar 27, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I suggest 10 million per pound over.

Thats reasonable, right?

LOL at this

You’re suggesting 1k is repercussion enough for a guy not to go fuckin 7 pounds over for a fight? Come on d00d..

Not suggesting that at all.

Just making fun of Pacman/Mayweather negotiations. Markham’s fine should be significant, but I’m sure Diaz got a hell of a back room bribe to stay in this. I think Joe Silva should make a 180 lbs catchweight fight for Markham vs. Rumble. Let them see how they feel about cutting less weight. That is unless they just refuse to give him fights at 170 anymore.

Dana probably threw him some money, but neither Diaz brother would back out of a fight. Nate would probably fight Brock tonight if they asked him to.

not not 10million per pound over, but i think cutting in half the possible win bonus would be sufficient

by Stillberry on Mar 27, 2010 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Everything is ok

Minowaman fights people who have 100 pounds on him, he still wins. Let Diaz be the David, im sure he will do fine. I predect he will use Crush’s finishing manuver from old school WWF. He was giving us a preview at the weigh ins.

HI YAH!

Is Minowaman really a good example..?

Nope he is not a good example

He’s a superhero. Diaz is just a good fighter

by IRodC on Mar 27, 2010 6:14 PM EDT up reply actions

also

if Diaz does win this fight against a middleweight, i guess that answers the questions about his move to WW

by Stillberry on Mar 27, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

$1,000 is a lot of money

When you’re only making $8,000 to fight.

Let’s say Markham looses. After he pays his fine, his training, his taxes, ect.,he’ll be lucky to walk away with $3,000.If that.

And the weight is going to make zero difference in this fight.Markham is a striker who is going to oblige Diaz in a standup war.Ten pounds or so isn’t much in a standup fight. It would be a big difference if Markham was a top position grappler and was looking to grind on Diaz all night with his size and strength. But he’s not,so people are blowing this way out of proportion and acting like this is some sort of unholy sin.Markham could come in at 205 and he’d still get lamped by Diaz. He’s got too many holes in his game.

No

Not if it’s a calculated loss. He’d gamble 1k to make 15k, which is 7k more than he may have thought he would have earned.

Another event, another weight cutting cock up. Its time to revamp the whole weigh in process so this shit doesnt happen. Weight cutting is such an uneccesary process.

Just have 2 or 3 weigh ins. 2 weeks before the fight, 1 week before the fight and on the night of the fight. This way, fighters will actually fight at the same weight (a fair fight) and the promotions will get a heads up if it looks like a guy might not make weight.
