Thiago Alves Out With Brain Irregularity for UFC 111
According to TMZ.com:
UFC's Thiago "Pitbull" Alves will not fight at Saturday's UFC 111, because a CAT Scan shows an irregularity in his brain ... TMZ has learned.
UFC honcho Dana White tells TMZ he will fly Pitbull to a specialist for further evaluation. White says, "If it's true, it can be career-ending."
No one will replace Pitbull on Saturday.

UPDATE [from Luke Thomas]: As unfortunate as this may be, there is a silver lining: this fight was scheduled to take place in New Jersey where this is a competent, experienced athletic commission. There are plenty of states that do not require a CAT scan to compete professionally. While this could be tragic for Alves' career and clearly hurts UFC 111, the upside here is that thorough athletic commission standards could be saving the life and well-being of a human being. That's good news even when it's bad news.
UPDATE 2: [by Anton Tabuena] - According to Kurt Pellegrino, his fight against Fabricio Camoes gets promoted to the main card. Also, MMAMania says that there's a chance that Fitch could still fight:"Fitch instructed to maintain weight; has offered to move up to 185 to help UFC find suitable opponent."UPDATE 3: [by Anton Tabuena] - The UFC comes out with an official statement. Jon Fitch will not fight:
Due to medical licensing issues, welterweight contender Thiago Alves has been pulled from his UFC 111 rematch with Jon Fitch this Saturday at Newark’s Prudential Center. There will be no replacement opponent brought in for Fitch, and the lightweight battle between New Jersey’s own Kurt Pellegrino and Fabricio Camoes will now be moved up to the Pay-Per-View portion of the card.UPDATE 4: [by Nick Thomas] - ATT camp wants Alves vs. Fitch at UFC 112:
The UFC 111 card, which features the welterweight title fight between Georges St-Pierre and Dan Hardy and the interim heavyweight title bout between Frank Mir and Shane Carwin, will proceed with ten bouts.
TATAME.com called Ricardo Liborio, one of the American Top Team leaders.
"We’re waiting for the analyses from the commission, that is studying the case," Liborio explains, guaranteeing that the athlete is fine. "He’s super well trained, he wanted this fight for a long time. He’s in a great shape, but it happens… It’s in God’s hands now, there’s nothing we can do".
"He’s [Alves is] pissed off, he really wanted to fight now. After this fight, we’ll see if we can match this fight to the next UFC, in Abu Dhabi (UFC 112)," Ricardo said. "They are the two of the best welterweight fighters and this fight would determinate who’s the next in line for the title".

Scoops are over rated now mostly because Blogs. Anyone can blog about something and it doesn’t have to be true. So they can print rumors and when it turns out to be true they got a “scoop.”
Where there is no penalty for printing rumors as fact what’s the value in getting a scoop?

Why does Dana...
ALWAYS have to say “This could end his career”
Just let things play out Dana. Damn.
It's his job?
To create unnecessary panic? First Brock, then Cantwell, now Alves?
he’s a fight promoter, not a press officer, not a CEO. if you’re truly experiencing panic over thiago alves’ situation then that’s another problem unto itself.
by karmaportrait on Mar 25, 2010 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah but everytime somebody get’s injured in may end their career. No need to say it every time. It’s Dana’s way of being overdramatic. Just like “I have a HUGE announcement that will change MMA forever, It’s a Randy Couture action figure!”
Last fall there were a long string of injuries that pulled fighters off of cards...
and only one of them had Dana saying it might end the fighter’s career. It’s not Dana practicing Hyperbole here.
He says it here because....
In a sport where you get punched and kicked and dropped on your head, any kind of brain injury or irregularity could cause serious issues in the cage or even a death. This is no small matter and it’s quite possible that if it’s something permanent and serious that Alves will never be able to get a license to fight again.
I wonder if the irregularity has anything to do with all the weight he cuts. Doesn’t cutting a lot of weight take fluid away from your brain or something?
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

They're not replacing Alves
But if they did, it would probably be Almeida. He was already scheduled for a fight with Fitch in the past and at least if he got taken down there’s the possibility he could sweep or submit. Saunders would just be in way over his head.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.
by lowellthehammer on Mar 25, 2010 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know about that. I somewhat like the idea of Saunders vs. Fitch. At least Saunders would try to maul Fitch standing, and he’s lengthy enough off his back to be dangerous. I wouldn’t mind it. It’s better than what the main event might potentially be… a one round crushing.

Saunders’ aggressiveness on the feet would get him taken down, and I doubt he has enough defensive BJJ to get Fitch off of him once there. Having a great clinch is fantastic when guys want to stand with you, but it ultimately doesn’t mean much when you’re on your back.
Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

His defensive BJJ with added length would put Fitch on the defensive quite a bit IMO, and Fitch would have to wade through his length. I think it’d be a decent fight.

In regards to Luke's comments
NJ is definitely the gold standard as far as Athletic Commissions are concerned. While I know people are concerned about judging and having training for judges, there should be a training course run by Lembo and the rest of the AC where they create the policies to control the sport.
I think that MA is on the right path with their proposed Day of Fight weigh in and certain percentage allotted for rehydration. If this could be done across all states, you’ll make greater steps ensuring fighter long term health.
twitter.com/thisredengine
There are negatives with that same-day weigh-in though...
Like fighters staying dehydrated for a day straight until the second weigh-in is over…
That said, I havent made up my mind on which method would be better…

Exactly. While he’s not sitting in the sauna sweating out 55 lbs the week of the fight, it’s still a massive toll to put on your body. And rehydrating can cause more damage. Walking around 185/190 for WW isn’t a huge cut. Walking around at 195 and cutting to 155 is.

Fitch/Pierce II?
Pierce just decisioned a guy on the prelim of Vera/Jones.

That means he's still in fighting shape. (unless he sustained injuries)
if he can fight, why not? they’re already desperate for a challenger.

Or they could just cancel the fight like they plan, and move him to another card
Fitch vs. Anyone Else right now is likely going to be 15 wasted minutes, as opposed to Thiago Alves, who would’ve wasted him in 3 minutes.

The rematch absolutely nobody asked for.

Krzysztof Soszynski did.
Fought at both UFC 97 and 98. Looked great at 98 as well. Hits like a truck.

Tragic
My thoughts go out to Thiago and his family.
This is pretty sad stuff.
YES!
I could easily see Rory McDonald go in. I know, I know. He needs to build slowly, but if he feels he is ready why not let him take a shot at it. He is undefeated and a win against Jon Fitch would catapult him to the top of the division.
not taking into account
UFC 115… which is lightyears away… kinda.
The dude Hardy beat? Yeah. ….. about that….. um for his sake he needs to stick to the nate Diaz plan.

I’d rather see the fight get scrapped over Sakara being hauled down and beaten over three rounds. Sakara’s ground is deficient against Fitch’s wrestling. Sure, he can punch, but he’ll get bombed to the floor fast.

well damn
guess it doesn’t matter then. we just have to get used to the idea of Pellegrino… which i wish it was Pallhares/Drwal
I guess also because Pellegrino is more well known
Than either of those two.
I got a feeling will be seeing Palhares/Drwal anyway.

Get well, Thiago.
Frankly, I don’t care if the fight gets made or not (though I do have to admit its sucks for Fitch to train for a fight that does not happen) – just so long that Thiago is ok. We should all be grateful they caught it like this – instead of having him take a hit too many and end up on a gurney.

If it is career ending, that is terrrible news. He is young and full of potential, and could be champion of his division with time.

Another thing to think about
New Jersey has been overseeing the sport for almost a decade. Is it possible that the Zuffa’s push to legalize in every state with the tag line of “Look how much money you’ll make” has caused them to overlook thinks like screenings?
twitter.com/thisredengine
New commissions are likely not to spend the money New Jersey has. New Jersey is established as a combat sport haven, but a new commission may not want to make such a large investment right off the bat. I’d like to think this will be an eye-opener, though.
I don’t expect them to spend a ton of money, but some standards across the board (all commissions) regarding fighter health is a huge deal and shouldn’t be overlooked..
twitter.com/thisredengine
by Matthew Roth on Mar 25, 2010 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions
If this was a licensing test as opposed to being a pre-fight screening then it’s something different entirely. I would imagine that most states have extensive medical test requirements before they will issue or renew licenses but that doesn’t mean that any of them (including Jersey) have guys get a pre-fight cat scan. Until we know if this was a licensing physical or a pre-fight test it’s hard to get to those types of conclusions.
While this could be tragic for Alves’ career and clearly hurts UFC 111, the upside here is that thorough athletic commission standards could be saving the life and well-being of a human being. That’s good news even when it’s bad news.
100% agreed. As upset as I am to not see this fight, I’ll always side with the health of the fighters.
As for Fitch possibly fighting at 185. that would be interesting.

This is what Nevada should be doing. Having fighters say they fought with broken feet and dangerous injuries during post-fight interviews is embarrassing, and it’s obvious a questionnaire isn’t enough.

Is there a limit?
On how many fights they can air via paperview? Why would it not be plausible to air the Pellegrino/Camoes AND Pallhares/Drwal fights?
I hate watching fights on paperview.

UFC 99 had a 6 fight main card
But if you promote two prelims you’re left with only Riddle/Soto and Hamman/Wallace as your non-televised fights. That could easily lead to some repeated fights should the Spike card have early finishes.

which was the first (and only) time they did that. But this card with two title fights? No chance they add an extra fight.

I just knew that this card was too good to be true. I knew it. I just didn’t deserve to see that many interesting fights all in one night. I was particularly jacked about this one, mostly because I was convinced that Alves was going to take Fitch apart.
Still a great show. On the plus side, I don’t think this hurts the PPV numbers at all, considering only Hardcores really paid attention to this fight. Considering how much attention GSP and Mir have been getting, I doubt casuals paid much heed to this bout. Too bad for Alves though. Hope he’s alright.

Jon Fitch: I’ve got a fight. Ben stepped up, much respect!

Ben Saunders? That is a hell of a replacement fight.

Yeah, so he is in shape and ready to go and a lesser star sits out and gets paid. It would be easier to find a decent fight for Ellenberger if they needed too, but I don’t guess they will. They will just pay him.

Saunders/Fitch
Hours after learning opponent Thiago Alves failed a CT scan and was scratched from the card, his opponent, Jon Fitch (21-3 MMA, 11-1 UFC), has agreed to replace Jake Ellenberger (22-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and fight Ben Saunders (8-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) on the UFC 111 pay-per-view main card.
Multiple sources today confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) the change to Saturday’s card, which takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
A source told MMAjunkie.com said Saunders specifically asked for the new bout when Fitch became available.
Ellenberger has been promised his “show” and “win” money to make up for the UFC’s last-minute switch, we’re told.
An official announcement is expected any time now from the UFC.

For all the shady things they do, they are pretty good about some things.
Dana will do this and I’m sure he is paying out of pocket for for Alves’ specialist as well.
Where is the fight going to happen?
On PPV, on Spike?
