Thiago Alves Out With Brain Irregularity for UFC 111

Photo

According to TMZ.com:

UFC's Thiago "Pitbull" Alves will not fight at Saturday's UFC 111, because a CAT Scan shows an irregularity in his brain ... TMZ has learned.

UFC honcho Dana White tells TMZ he will fly Pitbull to a specialist for further evaluation. White says, "If it's true, it can be career-ending."

No one will replace Pitbull on Saturday.

UPDATE [from Luke Thomas]: As unfortunate as this may be, there is a silver lining: this fight was scheduled to take place in New Jersey where this is a competent, experienced athletic commission. There are plenty of states that do not require a CAT scan to compete professionally. While this could be tragic for Alves' career and clearly hurts UFC 111, the upside here is that thorough athletic commission standards could be saving the life and well-being of a human being. That's good news even when it's bad news.

UPDATE 2: [by Anton Tabuena] - According to Kurt Pellegrino, his fight against Fabricio Camoes gets promoted to the main card. Also, MMAMania says that there's a chance that Fitch could still fight:
"Fitch instructed to maintain weight; has offered to move up to 185 to help UFC find suitable opponent."
UPDATE 3: [by Anton Tabuena] - The UFC comes out with an official statement. Jon Fitch will not fight:
Due to medical licensing issues, welterweight contender Thiago Alves has been pulled from his UFC 111 rematch with Jon Fitch this Saturday at Newark’s Prudential Center. There will be no replacement opponent brought in for Fitch, and the lightweight battle between New Jersey’s own Kurt Pellegrino and Fabricio Camoes will now be moved up to the Pay-Per-View portion of the card.

The UFC 111 card, which features the welterweight title fight between Georges St-Pierre and Dan Hardy and the interim heavyweight title bout between Frank Mir and Shane Carwin, will proceed with ten bouts.
UPDATE 4: [by Nick Thomas] - ATT camp wants Alves vs. Fitch at UFC 112:
TATAME.com called Ricardo Liborio, one of the American Top Team leaders.

"We’re waiting for the analyses from the commission, that is studying the case," Liborio explains, guaranteeing that the athlete is fine. "He’s super well trained, he wanted this fight for a long time. He’s in a great shape, but it happens… It’s in God’s hands now, there’s nothing we can do".

"He’s [Alves is] pissed off, he really wanted to fight now. After this fight, we’ll see if we can match this fight to the next UFC, in Abu Dhabi (UFC 112)," Ricardo said. "They are the two of the best welterweight fighters and this fight would determinate who’s the next in line for the title".

Scoops are over rated now mostly because Blogs. Anyone can blog about something and it doesn’t have to be true. So they can print rumors and when it turns out to be true they got a “scoop.”

He says it here because....

In a sport where you get punched and kicked and dropped on your head, any kind of brain injury or irregularity could cause serious issues in the cage or even a death. This is no small matter and it’s quite possible that if it’s something permanent and serious that Alves will never be able to get a license to fight again.

They're not replacing Alves

But if they did, it would probably be Almeida. He was already scheduled for a fight with Fitch in the past and at least if he got taken down there’s the possibility he could sweep or submit. Saunders would just be in way over his head.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

by lowellthehammer on Mar 25, 2010 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t know about that. I somewhat like the idea of Saunders vs. Fitch. At least Saunders would try to maul Fitch standing, and he’s lengthy enough off his back to be dangerous. I wouldn’t mind it. It’s better than what the main event might potentially be… a one round crushing.

Saunders’ aggressiveness on the feet would get him taken down, and I doubt he has enough defensive BJJ to get Fitch off of him once there. Having a great clinch is fantastic when guys want to stand with you, but it ultimately doesn’t mean much when you’re on your back.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

by lowellthehammer on Mar 25, 2010 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

His defensive BJJ with added length would put Fitch on the defensive quite a bit IMO, and Fitch would have to wade through his length. I think it’d be a decent fight.

Not quite sold, but you’ve convinced me it could at least be competitive. After some thought I like it a bit better than Almeida/Fitch, mostly because Almeida/Fitch would turn into a terrible boxing match IMO.

In regards to Luke's comments

NJ is definitely the gold standard as far as Athletic Commissions are concerned. While I know people are concerned about judging and having training for judges, there should be a training course run by Lembo and the rest of the AC where they create the policies to control the sport.

I think that MA is on the right path with their proposed Day of Fight weigh in and certain percentage allotted for rehydration. If this could be done across all states, you’ll make greater steps ensuring fighter long term health.

Exactly. While he’s not sitting in the sauna sweating out 55 lbs the week of the fight, it’s still a massive toll to put on your body. And rehydrating can cause more damage. Walking around 185/190 for WW isn’t a huge cut. Walking around at 195 and cutting to 155 is.

Alves was 195 in his lats fight, so it’s 25 lbs. Tibau said that he’s 185 fight time (30 lbs). It’s still a lot of weight though.

Another thing to think about

New Jersey has been overseeing the sport for almost a decade. Is it possible that the Zuffa’s push to legalize in every state with the tag line of “Look how much money you’ll make” has caused them to overlook thinks like screenings?

twitter.com/thisredengine

by Matthew Roth on Mar 25, 2010 11:05 AM EDT reply actions

New commissions are likely not to spend the money New Jersey has. New Jersey is established as a combat sport haven, but a new commission may not want to make such a large investment right off the bat. I’d like to think this will be an eye-opener, though.

by woomikee on Mar 25, 2010 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t expect them to spend a ton of money, but some standards across the board (all commissions) regarding fighter health is a huge deal and shouldn’t be overlooked..

twitter.com/thisredengine

by Matthew Roth on Mar 25, 2010 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions

These commissions are government organizations right? In a state like say Iowa, I’m sure it’s hard to convince tax payers that there money is better served being spent on CT scans for pro fighters then on things like road repair.

by Worldisart on Mar 25, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed. That’s one of the only issues with not having any kind of national guidelines for commissions. The UFC really should insist on new states using the New Jersey commission as the gold standard, if they don’t do that already.

by woomikee on Mar 25, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

If this was a licensing test as opposed to being a pre-fight screening then it’s something different entirely. I would imagine that most states have extensive medical test requirements before they will issue or renew licenses but that doesn’t mean that any of them (including Jersey) have guys get a pre-fight cat scan. Until we know if this was a licensing physical or a pre-fight test it’s hard to get to those types of conclusions.

by who me on Mar 25, 2010 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

While this could be tragic for Alves’ career and clearly hurts UFC 111, the upside here is that thorough athletic commission standards could be saving the life and well-being of a human being. That’s good news even when it’s bad news.

100% agreed. As upset as I am to not see this fight, I’ll always side with the health of the fighters.

As for Fitch possibly fighting at 185. that would be interesting.

Saunders/Fitch

Linky

Hours after learning opponent Thiago Alves failed a CT scan and was scratched from the card, his opponent, Jon Fitch (21-3 MMA, 11-1 UFC), has agreed to replace Jake Ellenberger (22-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) and fight Ben Saunders (8-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) on the UFC 111 pay-per-view main card.

Multiple sources today confirmed with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) the change to Saturday’s card, which takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

A source told MMAjunkie.com said Saunders specifically asked for the new bout when Fitch became available.

Ellenberger has been promised his “show” and “win” money to make up for the UFC’s last-minute switch, we’re told.

An official announcement is expected any time now from the UFC.
