Eliot Marshall Released by the UFC

Following his loss to Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC on Versus:
"It is what it is, man," Marshall said today. "What do you want me to say? It sucks. What can you do? It's my own fault, and that's how it goes."

"I could have fought better," Marshall admitted. "I could have fought more aggressively. I thought Vladdy wasn't really engaging much; it was hard for me to find my distance with him.

... "They want to get rid of you, they get rid of you," Marshall said. "If they don't, they don't. That's how it goes."
Full interview at mmajunkie.com. Shannon Gugerty was also reportedly released by the UFC.

Thats pretty harsh…the Dude is 3-1 in the UFC. Must have been exceptionally boring fight

by Fedorable on Mar 23, 2010 9:34 PM EDT reply actions

NOOOOOOOO!!!!

I really like this guy!

He’s his own worst enemy when it comes to unleashing his aggresive side in the octagon.

I’m not worried, he’s extremely talented and he’ll find employment shortly with Strikeforce.

by JAYGK95 on Mar 23, 2010 9:35 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed. I like him too...

I thought he was one of the better TUF prospects kicking around. He isn’t bad on the feet and his BJJ is solid, he just needs to learn to push the pace a little more.

If strike Force was smart they would stay away for now. Like Kid Nate Says above Marshalls fights are utterly boring and dull. Thats the last thing strike Froce needs on its cards for popularity.

wow

I saw the Gugerty release coming, but I kinda liked Marshall

Thought it was a bit soon for Marshall. I would have gotten rid of Schafer before Marshall, or at least made them fight each other for a spot.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

He was 3-1 in the UFC

Are you kidding me? Lose one match after winning 3 over solid competition gets you cut. That just sucks man.

by bcpjkell on Mar 23, 2010 9:47 PM EDT reply actions

He lost by split decision too..

by andrew861 on Mar 23, 2010 9:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I just wonder has anyone wanting to keep him in the UFC actually watched any of his fights or is just looking up his Sherdog fightfinder info ? Not only was he buy far the most boring fighter in the UFC his 2 Wins against Magalhaes and Brilz were very questionable also. The UFC was just waiting for him to get a L so they could cut him.

Ummm....

I don’t understand this one bit. Wow……

If only he was Stephan Bonnar.

by darkside3744 on Mar 23, 2010 9:48 PM EDT reply actions

sucks you go 3-1, lose a split decision against a good fighter that didn’t want to engage and you get released.

Eliot is my friend and this is only another hurdle he will will work hard to get past.

Unfortunately, being exciting means more than winning or losing these days. I understand that, but I don’t really disagree with it.

I think Eliot deserved at least one more fight, that time being against a striker or at least someone willing to get after it.

by BJJDenver on Mar 23, 2010 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

it is pretty harsh

and blatantly unfair but I did NOT enjoy watching his fights.

No disagreement there. His fights were very lackluster, but there is also something to be said for the matchmaking. Stylistically, he was never matched up with an opponent that would create an exciting fight and he didn’t create one either.

by BJJDenver on Mar 23, 2010 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't even remember any of his fights

Which probably says it all.

Get rid of the ramp!

I got to be rude and say who cares if you didn’t like watching his fights, he was 3-1 and his one loss came against a top 25 fighter by split decision. And truthfully, why would anyone complain about having to watch his fights because Eliot was always on the prelims. Hell, I hate watching the Charlotte Bobcats too, but because they win ugly we will be forced to watch them in the playoffs.

by John Nash on Mar 23, 2010 11:52 PM EDT up reply actions

the UFC cared that no one liked watching his fights.

And that probably sounds too mean, I mean. I like the guy just fine. But Nate’s point was a valid one. The UFC doesn’t cut 3-1 fighters without cause.

I understand Nate and the UFC's point of view

but coming from my subjective, idealistic pov that the UFC should be more about the sport and not the spectacle ( I know, not very realistic) I think they should have kept him. They could have buried Eliot on the prelims if they were worried about him being boring. But if you label yourself a place where the best fight the best, where what you are offering is a legitimate sport and not a show, then a fighter who only has one loss via split decision to another quality LHW should have a place in your promotion.
Even if he isn’t a crowd pleaser.

by John Nash on Mar 24, 2010 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Tell him to keep him head up. Obviously a lot of people here saw something in him.

He may not be flashy, but he has been mostly effective. More training will lead to more confidence and probably / hopefully more aggressiveness. I hope to see him fight again soon.

by truck on Mar 23, 2010 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree with cutting Marshall

Perhaps it was something besides his actual record.

Gugerty needed to go and Gormley should be out soon.

It was because his fights were boring, simple as that.

by BJJDenver on Mar 23, 2010 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep, it’s all about entertaining the fans. You are better off disregarding your strengths and going for a FOTN or KOOTN.

still, at 3-1 I thought they would give him one more opportunity. I’m sure he will be brought back if the situation is right.

by BJJDenver on Mar 23, 2010 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Brooks & Dunn already covered that.

by Skoobs on Mar 24, 2010 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions

so does this mean Fitch will get cut as soon as he loses to someone even via SD?

by Jigger on Mar 24, 2010 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

please Marshalls fights made Fitch’s worst fights look like Fight of the year contenders. I asm just amazed do most of you not recall Marshall just avoding contact on the feet and being the poster boy for Lay-N-Pray when he finally got a take down.I think this might be good for his career becasue he needs to go on smaller shows to learn to open up his offense against lower level competition. Then maybe he will be back in the UFC ?

by Shocbomb on Mar 25, 2010 1:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Guys with elite ground games being released is really a bummer for fans who are into it. But, we shouldn’t be scratching our heads when giuys like Sherk and Gurgel abandon their wrestling and jiu jitsu respectively. They have to do what they have to to keep their employment.

by Skoobs on Mar 23, 2010 10:05 PM EDT reply actions

truck – exactly right he went for no subs or strikes ounce he got hisoppoent on the ground all he did was control them and ride out the round.

by Shocbomb on Mar 25, 2010 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions

His nickname should be “The Fire Extinguisher”. Seemed like a nice dude on TUF but I can’t remember a single fight of his that I’ve seen.

Get rid of the ramp!

by ihateemo on Mar 23, 2010 10:12 PM EDT reply actions

This sort of thing is disturbing to me. I recognize that entertainment will aways be a priority to an extent, but c’mon, cutting a guy who’s 3-1 in the organization? They’re not even pretending anymore.

by JRN on Mar 23, 2010 10:18 PM EDT reply actions

I guess we can also color Roy Nelson gone soon as well. Dana hates his arse too, so that should hasten his delivery to Strikeforce. The anti-Bonnar.

by Skoobs on Mar 23, 2010 10:30 PM EDT reply actions

nah Nelson won’t go that fast since he’s a somebody, amd has a fanbase, Dana knows he would be valueable to strikeforce

by kanodogg on Mar 23, 2010 11:10 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Nelson won the show... Those guys usually stick around for quite some time.

Plus they stay on main cards. Marshall didn’t have that benifit and was largely forgotten by casuals. The hardcore knew enough to track his progress though.

by truck on Mar 24, 2010 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions

It really goes to show that a fighter in the UFC has to be exciting or consistently winning in order to stay in the UFC. It sucks for Marshall, but it may be a good thing in that he can get some seasoning outside of the UFC. Some fighters are instant finishers, but there are high level fighters (and champions) that took a while to become finishers, and Marshall just might be one of those fighters.

by chrisbboy82 on Mar 24, 2010 1:11 AM EDT reply actions

My guess is that he was on a 4 fight contract, and UFC just chose not to re-new it. I am surprised by this, I don’t think Eliot will ever challenge for a world title, but he is a Solid guy who could be a top 15 fighter in the near future. UFC is just going to let him develop his game on someone else’s dime for a little while, he is 1 or 2 wins away from being back.
