Quote of the Day: James Toney Says "MMA Fighters Are Scared to Go Toe-to-Toe With a Boxer"

"MMA is a part time job because Dana White opened his mouth and I accepted his challenge."

"I'm a big fan of MMA. I like watching Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, …Anderson Silva, BJ Penn, Georges St. Pierre, I'm a big fan of all those guys. I enjoy the sport."

"When Dana White opened his mouth and said that MMA fighters are better than boxers. Hold on, I took offence to that. There's no way possible a world champion [boxer] in his prime can be beat by an MMA fighter, no matter how good they are."

"MMA fighters are scared to go toe to toe with a boxer; it's not going to happen. …their best chance of winning is trying to get the fighter to the floor. But the game starts on top first and when he gets close, it's over with."

"Me and my dad have been working on a lot of different details. [on preparing for the ground game and checking leg kicks] But if I tell you, I'd be letting my secret out. But tune in June, July to whoever I fight and you will all be very impressed with what I do."

"This is not a game, I'm thinking serious, I'm very excited to come to the UFC and let everybody see what a real world champion looks like."

-- James Toney talks Kimbo Slice at the 3:15 min mark and wanting to debut at Heavyweight at the 4:20 min mark.

I hope they dont put him against Kimbo, please put him against a guy thats been in the business for a while.

by bpx on Mar 23, 2010 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree

I think it’s a fair matchup. Kimbo is a somewhat green but improving MMA fighter and Toney is new to the sport. If he’s been working on his Kimboplexes I think he’ll make it a short night since I don’t envision Toney having the gas tank to endure being repeatedly dumped onto the canvas over the course of a single round, let alone three.

Since this thread is undoubtedly going to be getting into the “freakshow” aspect, I hope that Toney is not being paid a stupid amount of money to show. If he’s making something comparable to other fighters I’ll be OK with it.

Get rid of the ramp!

by ihateemo on Mar 23, 2010 2:59 PM EDT up reply actions

A fight with Kimbo would be awful. Any fight where Kimbo’s best bet is to take it to the floor is going to be a sloppy, miserable fight. If it stays standing, Kimbo will get destroyed, and the last thing he needs is to get taken out by a 40 year old boxer. Toney might be old, but he’s powerful and not to be toyed with by a sloppy street fighter. If Kimbo wins, that’s great and all, but I really doubt he will.

If Kimbo loses, which he probably would, it damages him even futher, and provides boxing fans with ammunition for the MMA is worthless argument, especially since the average fan doesn’t really get that Kimbo is all style and little skill. If he wins on the ground, then it’s lots of really crude ground work that will appeal to no one and turn off all the boxing fans Toney is supposed to attract while boring the crap out of MMA fans.

Kimbo v. Toney would be a disaster. Toney winning would be bad. Put him in against a G&P specialist so Toney can get put down and punched out.

exactly, and thank you.

a kimbo fight is terrible for MMA, because kimbo would get wrecked, and with all the bad mouthing big talk this guy is spewing in incoherent english, we need someone that will NOT stand and bang with the guy. he may be old and fat, but he throws bombs and he is a boxer. I want to see a real MIXED MARTIAL ARTIST in there with him to change levels, change angels, change attacks and be true to the sport. Kimbo lacks all of that ability. I want a statement made, and I want that blowhole’s mouth shut up.

I hate arrogance, I hate shitty, fat, over the hill boxers saying that MMA is a walk in the park and they will destroy any and all MMA fighters because its bullshit and deep inside they know it, even if they are so deluded that they pretend like they don’t. if he wants to come in at HW, give him gonzaga or kongo. kongo seems to have rekindled his wrestling and take downs. and gonzaga needs a guy that can only throw bombs to really utilize his skill set, and itll be a beatdown when the opponent has no wrestling, no TDD, no ground ability. gonzaga can use kicks to the legs and body, maybe a head kick here and there to work him a bit, then take him down and break his arm or punch his face out through the back of his fat head.

by Opposites Attack on Mar 23, 2010 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions

You're talking like Kimbo is somehow important in MMA

He’s a middling fighter with a 4-1 record and a TUF alum, which makes him just as qualified as any other middling heavyweight the UFC could put Toney in for his first fight. People need to get past the EliteXC fiasco and look at him as the fighter he is today – a guy with a fledgling pro record and a good training camp behind him.

People are getting so uptight about the things Toney says about MMA and I find it bizarre that anyone cares what a mealy mouthed, punch drunk 40-something heavyweight boxer says. Roy Mercer already proved that a formerly high level boxer can “still thump” (© Jens Pulver) when taken lightly, and Kimbo has proved that he is not reckless enough to wade into the fists/knees of someone with knockout power (that would be the Artist Formerly Known As Houston Alexander).

Put them on the undercard or a low-tier main card fight on a PPV and it’s a fight I’d be interested to watch. Toney wasn’t a terrible boxer and, in my mind, it’s a win/win situation. Either Kimbo looks stupid, Toney looks stupid or they both do. Neither man is relevant in the grand scheme of MMA and, hey, it’s not like the UFC is above putting together mismatched opponents these days (Cro Cop/Perosh, for instance).

Get rid of the ramp!

by ihateemo on Mar 23, 2010 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Kimbo is important to MMA. He’s not a relevant fighter, but he obviously has a lot of charisma that gets people interested in the sport and whatever league he’s fighting in.

And Toney is a character in Fight Night Round 3 & 4. He isn’t just some mealy mouthed has been—- he’s probably a lot more famous than ANY MMA fighter.

It seems like your problem with him is all the shit-talking he does. The way Toney’s going, he’s going to be just as charismatic and irrelevant as Kimbo.

Toney is important to boxing. He’d have to have a hell of an MMA career for him not to be primarily identified as a boxer.

I’m a fan of boxing, but if you really don’t think a guy like George St. Pierre has a way to negate a boxer’s striking you’re kidding yourself.

He would create distance with leg kicks and the moment his opponent’s weight shifts he will take them to the ground.

I wish Toney all the success in the world just like Kimbo, but he’s kidding himself if he thinks he’ll win a fight against a guy like Couture.

JDS would smoke him..

JDS is too fast and he’ll get blitzed with a shot Toney wont see coming…

Toney is old and punch drunk.. Listen to him talk.. That blurred speech is from years of repeated shots to the head..

This is nothing more than a one off publicity stunt because Toney is not the best boxer, not in his prime and has no shot of beating the top HW’s in MMA. Lesnar will dump him on his head within the first 8 seconds and call it a night when he thumps Toney to peaces.. Mir, Carwin, JDS, Gonzaga, Couture, Nog, (even Cro Cop now) would all put him down and submit him or pound him out..

Sure he has a punchers chance.. But a slight punchers chance at his age and conditioning.. A smart fighter would just expose his biggest weakness and collect the check.. Why stand when you can tap him in under a minute ??

Not to give JT a solid wrestler out of the gate. Have a great or solid striker/ kickboxer that will be willing to exchange and able to defend himself. I’m gonna say, JT really needs to be careful what he wishes for. Just look at Vera and see the possibility for injury. I see what JT is trying to do here. He’s trying to crossover MMA fans to boxing, but, the UFC is trying to crossover boxing fans to MMA. This is an interesting sub plot and one that I haven’t seen mentioned. If JT gets hurt badly, it ruins his chance to be relevent in boxing again. A giant risk for a 41 y.o. boxer. I’ll watch him fight MMA but have no interest in watching him box.

I strongly suspect Toney is going to be a 1 and done in MMA; he’s just looking for a way to reinvigorate his boxing career and stay in the news. No need to let him get away with that – that does nothing for the UFC’s business interests. Just feed him to a high level UFC fighter who can dominate him and raise their own media profile through the victory.

Well, i guess that’s my answer. It just seems to me like a dumb decision just to make money when they’re already profiting larger than ever probably.

The problem with that

Is that Toney doesn’t have to accept a second fight, and he may very well not if he gets an impressive win in his first bout. The UFC spends a lot of time and money helping market their fighters and build their profile; it’s an investment in a business asset.

It’s obvious that Toney’s longterm priority right now is still his boxing career. The big risk is that they give Toney all this media exposure only to have him KO some journeyman UFC heavyweight and then immediately “retire” from MMA having “proven his point”, and then go on to use his raised media profile to secure big boxing paydays.

Not saying that’s necessarily what Toney has in mind, but there’s definitely a strong possibility of it, and that’s a big risk for the UFC to take, investing in an asset that could disappear at any moment.

That’s why the safe bet is to let him get destroyed in his first match. It would help sell a PPV card, and could give some much needed media exposure to one of the up and coming UFC HWs, so even if Toney decides to jump ship at that point, the UFC still profits from signing him. It’s a much lower risk business strategy, especially with a guy like Toney who is undoubtedly going to talk smack on an epic scale if he does KO an MMA fighter.

You make a strong case

JT is trying to get paid. So, the chance of JT only fighting 1 time seems unlikely. The fact the he was in the UFC will help JT become a boxing PPV draw. Win or lose, JT is betting that the UFC will leverage his time to a boxing PPV pay day.

Boxing fans crossing over to MMA

I am thinking that might be part of it. The UFC vs boxing discussion may have something to do with it too. Obviously, JT will bring in PPV. Money is an obvious answer. Finally, UFC exposure in the “mainstream media”.

by whardiek on Mar 23, 2010 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

As others have postulated, I think it may have been a defensive move to keep Toney away from Strikeforce, and away from a potentially high profile fight against Herschel Walker. Toney made noises about having talked to Strikeforce and being interested in that fight, and it was only after that that the UFC signed him on.

That may have been true but,JT may also have used that as leverage to get in the UFC. JT to Strikeforce wouldn’t help him nearly as much as, JT to UFC.

no no no.

we, as the MMA community, do NOT want a fighter to stand with him. that is a good way to get KOed and have him rub it in our faces that he can KO MMA guys, and we will never EVER hear the end of it.

No

JT’s not a heavy puncher. He wasn’t a heavy puncher at 160 as a boxer. He stopped an even more punch-drunk Holyfield a few years ago but that was a referee stoppage. He has terrible footwork and can’t hit at that weight. I don’t know how he wins.

worst idea to who?

putting Buentello against most well rounded up and comers seems unfair. he likes to stand and bang, as does Toney. i personally think it would be a good match up, but then again i want to see Toney in a entertaining fight as opposed to getting taken down and submitted in ten seconds.

you are thinking WAY too logically here.

if you want to see a competitive fight that puts two guys together that will test each others skills in a certain area, then yes, you are absolutely right. but this guy has such a big mouth that if he were to win his first fight? we’d never hear the end of his outrageous generalizations about how MMA is so easy, and its nothing compared to boxing, blah blah blah. his first fight should be jsut to shut up that big mouth of his, and then give him some real competitive stuff that suits his style after hes been “initiated” so to speak.

by Opposites Attack on Mar 23, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

why get him embarrassed in his first fight? lets be real, Dana isnt going to have Toney get destroyed his first fight. his best bet is to build him up fight then show him its not easy after the shit talking starts

So that buentello get smoked standing? Toney is a ex world champion, don’t go thinking his boxing is anywhere near buentello’s level. We need a well rounded MMA fighter, not a great one, just someone knows his wrestling and his BJJ to make toney taste the real flavour of MMA.

EXACTLY.

thats precisely what i said in my comment that got removed for my fathead reference. I want to see a guy in there that will change levels, change angles, change tactics and vary his attack….a true MIXED MARTIAL ARTIST, not a one dimensional guy that will play into Toney’s strength. This should be a “hey, welcome to MMA” kind of fight that shows him this is NOT boxing, and it requires skill beyond punching power.

by Opposites Attack on Mar 23, 2010 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Like, Chiek Kongo?

He has a takedown, GNP, and kickboxing. He’s hovering around the top 20-25ish and isn’t likely to move past that. His head movement isn’t great so he can get tagged, but he also has tools to win and finish. That’s fair.

Unless you think it’s ok to put Buentello or Moustapha Al Turk in against a former boxing champion. Because that does nothing for anybody.

Al turk is supposed to have some BJJ skills I think, he can style clinch pull guard and submit Toney. Even if his wrestling sucks he should be able to take down toney and submit him. Buentello could do it too but we all know buentello would stand (and bang) that’s just how he roll. No boxing god would stand a chance against any MMA fighter, Toney, Ali, apolo Creed, whatever, this our playground, you just can’t be a boxer on an MMA ring/octagon.
Basically, Toney vs any UFC HW = Toney vs BROCK LESNAR. It doesn’t matter who it is, the gap in wrestling skills will always be huge and impossible to overcome for him. Any fighter will look unstoppable against this MMA noob. But ( with very few exceptions) anyone willing to stand and bang with toney is asking for a reality check.

thats one name I through out there at the very top of the comments. I think he could be a great first fight for JT. I just don’t want to see any more ammo or arrogance added to JT arsenal. He needs to be taken down a notch or two, so to speak. Shown the true nature of a MIXED MARTIAL ARTIST.

JT’s logic still amazes me. What does that mean when fighters say that their opponent won’t dare play to their strength? Why should a fighter play to the strength of their opponent? You don’t see that gameplan in any sport, generally. If a gold medalist Olympic wrestler comes in and says “MMA opponents are afraid to wrestle with me” everyone should openly mock them. Of course they’re not going to wrestle with you. They’re going to try and beat you.

Want to see Buentello Vs Toney that would be sick. Buentello can stand with anyone and actually with and not bitch out like the Super Check kongos of the world.

Toney Vs JDS would really impress me as well. Having JDS fight the way he normally fights would be nice to see how a prime MMA standup boxer fares againts a former champ past his prime.

Who cares what the boxing guys say these are fights many want to see. It doesn’t damage our sport. Boxing is dead there is no debate.

these arguments are so stupid when these fighters get going

The best boxer could probably beat anyone AT BOXING; but not at mma. And vice versa.

Even mma fighters that come from other regulated areas have to relearn techniques to deal with new things in the game. Elbows, soccer kicks, etc. A boxer would have to deal with so many things in mma they’ve never seen.

Toney would get wrecked unless they are dumb enough to put him up against someone that just wants to strike with him like Kimbo.
