Coach Trevor Wittman says Paul Buentello tapped out mainly due to pain from his dislocated finger, and considered retirement following his loss to Cheick Kongo:
"He couldn't take it anymore," Wittman today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). "Kongo did a great job of applying pressure and (threw) nice elbows to the hip sockets and that high leg and the knees to the body ... that all had to do with it also. But his hand was in severe pain."
"The rules are (that) the fighter is allowed to put it back into place himself," Wittman said. "If he can't put it in and he can't continue, the fight is over. The doctor just kind of stepped in; I don't think the doctor understood the rules. We went over it with the commission in the back room. It was totally not the correct thing to do."
"[Buentello] said he was thinking about quitting," Wittman said. "I told him to not make any rash decisions. He was like, 'Oh, the UFC's going to cut me.' Honestly, from my perspective – and I try to keep it as real as I can because I love Paul, and I think he's a great fighter – I think he's got to have more dimensions at this high level of the game."

Paul Buentello has moxie, and is a game fighter but he really needs strong takedown defense. Kongo is in the same boat, he just happened to be a bit more well around, just barely.
I agree, but
I don’t see Buentello reinventing himself at this point in his career, particularly with the massive strength deficit he’d be dealing with in the HW division. He was great to watch in his prime, but he’s really a relic of a different age.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

There is really no difference from Paul in his prime and now he is still the same fighter. The only thing is the HW’s got alot better.
"now he is still the same fighter"
yeah and that’s the problem.
"That's right I'm into hardcore crack, that's why my teeth are so bad"
I guess Kongo’s gameplan was fairly smart but it made it a painfully dull fight. He has very average wrestling, but it was clearly better than Buentello’s. I’d still keep Buentello around though, he looked ok against Struve, he is a good way of testing young prospects

Agree.
He is still serviceable as a crowd pleasing banger. He could fill the same role in the HW division that James Irvin fills at LHW, Alessio Sakara fills at MW, Chris Lytle fills at WW, and Jorge Gurgel used to fill at LW. He’s never going to be a contender again, but he can still provide entertaining brawls as long as he is matched up correctly.
have buentello fight brendan schaub
buentellos a great way of testing talent, he has good boxing and nothing else
just throw him in against prospects, if he beats them they arent worthy to be in the UFC if he doesnt they are hes a solid gatekeeper in a growing but still thin division
I hope they keep Paul just because he is near retirement in the sport.
Give the guy a rest, let him make his pay, he has paid his dues.
Give him 4 more fights, he is exciting, even put him on the undercard if you have to.
He is well worth it, never gives up and is not the kind of guy the UFC should shit on. He isn’t quitting on the stool, he is not turning down fights, he is not talking shit about anyone.
He is a class act and deserves to be in the UFC, there are lots of fights for him at heavyweight. Put him against Tuchsehschserhser if you have to get rid of 1 guy, but make sure he is not retiring at a Taco Bell with a lifetime of injuries, I want to see him be able to be a coach or atleast be remembered.
Dislocation is pain...
Ive dislocated my finger before when it got jammed into something, the pain is extreme and instant! The first joint slid back over the second one. I put it back in myself, there was no way I take that pain till you could get to a doc.
It takes a tough guy to keep hitting with that hand.
Mine took nearly a year to before all the pain went away.
I don’t think there is much reason to keep Gormley. He’s young and even if he were to beat someone like Buentello there’s no point in hiim sticking around as he isn’t going to be able to compete with anyone else in the UFC heavyweight division at this stage of his career.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.
I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
