FUCK. I know this is going to sound typical of someone who was going on about Vera’s durability…but lesser men would have been tapping, and not even worrying about curling up and rolling over. The pain must have been sickening. Not to mention the blows that came after the big elbow.

Vera seemed motivated for what its worth.

I think the curling up and rolling over is a natural instinct when you get hurt bad. It says something about Vera’s durability that he suffered facial bone fractures and didn’t go to sleep though.

I was thinking,

holy shit did vera just get rocked really bad with that elbow?! …then found out he rolled over cause Jones broke a bone near his eye.. that shit must have hurt.

I was surprised it didn’t open up a gash

Yeah. In the slow mo replay...

You could see his cheek bone was out of place and his eye was almost swollen shut before he rolled over.

by truck on Mar 22, 2010 10:29 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

As soon as he rolled over I knew something had to be broken.

Vera isn’t a puss and you could tell he was reacting to some severe pain.

by truck on Mar 22, 2010 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Yep. You’re definitely right it was a natural reaction. A dude like Vera, as tough as he is, just doesn’t roll over unless something bad happened. As soon as he rolled over, I figured his face was broken cause that elbow was vicious.

So

Where does Vera go from here?

by JayKim41 on Mar 22, 2010 10:41 AM EDT reply actions

not vera, where does jones go from here?

I dont think Vera is going anywhere, he is still an entertaining fighter, gate keeper if you will. But, Jones, damn, kid’s got power in all phases of his game. It’s scary how far this kid can go.

Brandon Vera is the new Keith Jardine...

Jardine won’t be around too much longer if he keeps getting KO’d…

that’s borderline flag worthy. My stomach seized up.

See, MMA gets such a bad rap because all the injuries are exposed to the viewer, but’s it’s no more dangerous that many other sports. Hell, this weekend, a NASCAR driver was hospitalized with a broken pelvis. Given the nature of the crash, he’s lucky to be alive.

Jones, Dos Santos and Howard are beasts

The power and brutality these guys showed last night was eye opening. UFC are loaded for bear. It’s gonna be interesting to see what kind of fighter can handle these guys.

by whardiek on Mar 22, 2010 11:07 AM EDT reply actions

wasn't that impressed with howard.

The KO was awesome, but I’m still not that sold on his skillset… I think Anthony Johnson will smash him.

by Anton Tabuena on Mar 22, 2010 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

He might, but what has you so sold in Johnson's skill set?

I like him as a prospect too, but the biggest “skill” he has shown so far is weight cutting (and he has failed at that a couple times). Rumble is very athletic and very strong, but he isn’t a technical striker, dominant wrestler or a submission guy. He needs seasoning.

by truck on Mar 22, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not 'sold' on Anthony Johnson yet,

and yes he needs more experience, but from what I’ve seen on both guys, Rumble would probably win it.

they’re both ‘athletic’ and ‘explosive’ though. :P

by Anton Tabuena on Mar 22, 2010 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

johnson is terrible, the only thing he has going for him is that he hits hard… does howard have a wrestling background? if so he can just ‘do what kos did’ otherwise i think howard hits f’n hard too… KO’d a dude w/ one punch from guard, how often do you see that.

by kanodogg on Mar 22, 2010 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I was going nuts

when Roberts pulled rubber guard. I had Roberts winning, knowing he was the underdog, just to root for him. I didn’t even realize he had a rubber guard and it looked good for a second. Then Howard pulled out and the rest is history. Roberts just rushed his rubber guard. Your supposed to keep the posture controlled THEN go for the sweep but Howard was already pulling out when Roberts was bringing the leg around. And Howard, being the crafty guy he is, blocked Roberts right leg from being able to lock up the Omoplata. Really great stuff.

by Nyfeh on Mar 22, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I believe Howard does have some wrestling, but not to the level of Koscheck...

I don’t think Johnson is terrible, but he doesn’t have a lot going for him other than “Big”, “Strong” and “Hits Hard” at this point. He does have the athletisism to develop into a force though.

by truck on Mar 22, 2010 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions

rumble is a juco wrestling champ

howard aint taking him down or knocking him out

by staytrue2010 on Mar 22, 2010 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I couldn’t think of that many WWs in the UFC who can beat Johnson. Just because Koscheck did, doesn’t mean it’s an easy feat. Not many guys can get him to the mat, and not many can handle Johnson’s power in his strikes.

I think the 170 lb limit will beat Johnson’s body sooner than later, however.

by Hardcharger on Mar 22, 2010 12:57 PM EDT up reply actions

i can think of a bunch, jon fitch, paulo thiago, mike pierce, paul daley, of course GSP, probably a few more i can’t think of offhand.

yeah, i agree him fighting at welterweight is ridiculous, 6’2" large frame fighting at 170? wtf….

by kanodogg on Mar 22, 2010 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

But that’s only 5 you listed, and I’d disagree with Pierce for sure, and a couple of the matchups may be quite interesting. I’m not a big Rumble fan, but I do think he’s a bad matchup for everyone but the most elite wrestlers at 170.

by Hardcharger on Mar 22, 2010 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions

elite meaning....

Rich Clementi??? Rumbles most impressive win is over Kevin Burns………..KEVIN BURNS!!!!!!!

wtf wasnt that his 2nd fight in the ufc

how long ago was that 2,3 years ago. rumble would hands on clementi now. rumble still a up in coming prospect.

Here's nine: GSP, Kos, Fitch, Shields, Daley, Hardy, Alves, Thiago and Kampmann

Swick, Condit, Saunders, Ellenberger or Howard would be a good level of opponent for Johnson right now.

hahahahahahahahahahahaa.

hahahahahahhaa

by kanodogg on Mar 22, 2010 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the top tier wrestler / grapplers like Kos, GSP, Fitch and mabye Shields will be able to take him down.

…and I don’t think top level strikers will fear exchanging with him. Kos did well in the stand up against him, so I have no reason to beleive Daley, Hardy, Alves, Thiago and Kampmann would do just fine.

He should be inther against someone like Condit, Ellenberger or Howard at thie point.

by truck on Mar 22, 2010 1:10 PM EDT up reply actions

howard showed alot

I was impressed by the fact that Howard hung tough. He was taking some hard shots and was able to absorb the damage and get a reversal. Howard has some serious power in his hands. Johnson vs. Howard would be an interesting fight. I was really impressed by Howard, he will be making his way up to main card staus really soon.
