UFC on Versus: Thoughts and Grumblings

11009-11005-jonesveraufcv1_mediumTonight Jon Jones shut me up again, when will I learn my lesson?  This remains to be seen as, once again, Jones avoids being hit with his beautiful Greco Roman skills, and use of a gameplan.  We also saw Junior Dos Santos take out his most legit opponent yet in Gabriel Gonzaga, notching another first round KO up for the young Brazilian.  But who deserves even more credit than these two talented fighters?

Herb Dean, and Josh Rosenthal.  Lately it seems like I'm constantly yelling at my TV screen at some incompetent referee every show that comes on, and tonight, these two men did us (read as, me) proud.  Controversy struck in the first fight of the night, where Alessio Sakara took on James Irvin, in Irvin's middleweight debut.  I wasn't surprised to see Irvin being out struck by Sakara, who is far more comfortable at this weight, and has been on a small tear himself.  Sakara landed a left hook to Irvin's eye after trading kicks and punches throughout the first round, and it seemed Irvin was poked in the eye.  Rosenthal held his judgement long enough to catch a replay and see that in all actuality, Sakara's ring and pinky knuckle actually sunk right into Irvin's eye socket, which is a completely legal blow.  The bout was called a first round TKO for Sakara, and I'm elated that the right call was made.

Next, arguably one of the best refs in MMA, Herb Dean took the ring when Cheick Kongo and Paul Buentello squared off.  This fight was full of calls that could have gone wrong, or made for a sad stoppage.  First, Buentello apparently dislocated his pinky finger while grazing Kongo's head with an uppercut.  Herb immediately saw something had gone awry and he checked on Paul, and after some confusion, brought him to the doctors as the fighter struggled to set his finger back in place himself.  It almost felt that if Herb shared Paul's frustration with Kongo's strategy, and wanted to be sure Paul had every chance to continue on.  Sure enough, Paul fixed his finger himself (this might sound odd, but chances are it's a repeated injury that he's dealt with for a while now) and jumped back into the fight ready to lay hands on Kongo.   Sadly for Buentello, Kongo was having none of it.  The next event that called for a Herb's interference, was a knee to Buentello's chin while he had three points of contact to the mat, making him a downed opponent.  He caught this immediately and deducted a point from Kongo after letting Paul know he DID NOT have 5 minutes to clear his head.

Shortly after Paul was back in the fight, and was now eating knees to the head as he was bent over against the cage, but found himself being reprimanded for "playing the game", by touching his hand to the mat while Kongo unleashed some nasty knees, trying to cause Kongo to unintentionally foul him.  This was my favorite call of the night, simply because I've seen many a fighter try to take that route and get away with it.

Those two fights stand out the most, although Herb also handled the Brandon Vera/Jon Jones fight well when Vera landed a very, very hard upkick to Jones while he was down.  Of course, the night wasn't perfect by any means, John Howard was allowed to blast his opponent far too many times after he was clearly knocked out.

Pardon the wall of text my friends, but in this sport we see so much bad reffing it's sad, and for as much hate as referees receive, I thought they deserved some props.  For those of you who avoided the mass invasion of English language to your computer screen, here's a quick roundup of my thoughts on tonight's show.

-Buentello is fun when it comes to a kickboxing match, but when it comes to the question "Does he belong in the UFC?" I'm afraid my answer is no.  I hope he sticks around because I find him fun to watch, but he needs to get back to Strikeforce and try to give it another go at their title.

-Watching Kongo wrestle is like watching Sean Sherk kickbox.  No doubt he's got some mean ground and pound, but how many Heavyweights will he be able to take down and hold down?  I think Kongo needs to fight Gonzaga next.

-Junior Dos Santos.  I had my doubts about him, but tonight, I'm on the hype train.  I jumped from my seat when he put Gonzaga to sleep, and I hope he has some continued success.

-Speaking of JDS, am I the only one relieved to hear a guy call for the title shot and sound hungry?  I love humble fighters, but "Whatever the UFC wants, I'm ready." is a lame answer.  You're a fighter!  You have an ego!  Don't hide it from us, but you don't have to be a jerk as well.  Fine line to walk, but at least attempt to walk it.

-Vera, Vera, Vera.  Give him some time to figure out what he needs to do with his career, and if he wants a fight, let him start from square one.  Certainly don't want to give him up to Strikeforce though.

-"Bones" is a threat to anyone in the LHW division, and even if someone can manage to tag his chin, I have a feeling it's not glass at all.  He's so young, and so talented, and so damn good...if he continues to put in the work, I openly admit that he's the future.

Hope you guys at least enjoyed the read, this is like, my second fanpost, so give me some advice, thoughts, or just troll me.  Thanks for reading!

Well, I had Jones with his hand raised, but in retrospect, that’s what everyone and their brother would use. Jones being in a dominant position in a fight certainly fits well and doesn’t seem as predictable as the, almost necessary, Jones victory shot.

I think Herb did just fine tonight. I really respect the way he didnt let Paul manipulate the rules the second time when he knelt down into a knee that Kongo had been throwing while both were standing; “You did that to yourself Paul.” Herb said to him.

You could almost hear the mental “Well…shit” from Paul when that happened. Sneaky sneaky, would have sucked if Kongo was penalized for that one.

well put

and totally agree with your assessment of Rosenthal and Dean tonight. They did a SUPERB job this evening. The ref in that Roberts/Howard fight however… why was he so far away from the action when the fight came to an end?? He should have been beside the fighters watching that action closely, and instead he was 4 steps directly BEHIND the action. How can you get a good luck from there buddy?!?! I was disappointed with how that went down, but absolute kudos to Rosenthal and Dean tonight.

I know, I feel like the ref was as ready as I was for that KO…and I was sitting on a recliner stuffing my face…soooooo…bad on him.

Dean did a great job in the Kongo / Buentello fight.

That fight was a terrible sloppy mess, but he gave it some sense of organization.

"We also saw Junior Dos Santos take out his most legit opponent yet in Gabriel Gonzaga, notching another first round KO up for the young Brazilian."

I’m sorry, but Werdum is definitely still JDS’ best win IMO. Even though he came into the fight out of shape, Fabricio was legitimately ranked in the HW top 5 when Junior layed him out, and he was seen as the de facto title challenger for when the Mir vs. Nog & Brock vs. Randy dust had settled.

Gonzaga is a great fighter, and is very dangerous, but Werdum is definitely a better win (not to even speak of Fabricio’s 2 dominant wins over Gabe).

On a side not

I think that Gabe’s chin is a bit of a question mark right now- obviously Carwin & Dos Santos hit incredibly hard, so there’s no shame in getting KO’d by them, but at the very least Gabriel has some holes in his defense that he needs to work on. But the fact of the matter is that he’s been knocked cold in 2 of his last 3 fights.

Yep, hit the nail on the head here. If he ends up getting shut down like that again, he needs to hook up with some good wrestlers and change his game up a bit. If he worked on his takedowns, striking defense, and holding down opponents while being aggressive with his BJJ, he may see another surge to the top. But I think Gonzaga’s time has come and gone.

I keep telling people that Gabe is reminding me of Arlovski...

So much skill, but also a little too prone to get his brain rattled. It is a shame, but that is reality. They are both still great talenets and very fun to watch.

I don't think it's a chin issue

I mean, these are legit heavyweights, and no amount of chin will save you forever, but his defense does need to be shored up. Doesn’t hurt that JDS timed that hook perfectly

by woomikee on Mar 22, 2010 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

VERY solid point. Truthfully, I think you’re right. Thats what I get for posting so fast. I think what made me overlook that fight is that when that fight happened, Dos Santos was just a big Brazilian, and I mentally wrote that fight off as a fluke. Well played sir, I completely agree.

I think it's time to put Vera on the undercard

and see if that lights a fire under his ass. I’m not basing this off just the Jones fight either.

At this point it’s a travesty that Vera is in a main event and Clay Guida is in a dark match

We're just a million little gods causin' rain storms, turning every good thing to rust.

by Anthony Pace on Mar 22, 2010 2:37 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

Oh yeah. He has no business in a main event, or even co-main. First fight of the night material. Another loss and I’m tossing my hopes for him out the window. And great point with Guida. Go figure none of us actually got to see a fight he finished.

Didnt they try that

with Mike Patt at UFC 96? But you are correct Vera has no more business in main events.

As for Guida being in a dark match, 2 things made it a dark match.

1) Sherk pulling out. If it was Sherk/Guida it would have been on the broadcast.

2) Guida, exciting as he is, was coming off back to back loses and Gugerty is not well known.

I know I’m in the minority here but Guida just irks me. The caveman routine gets tired after a while. That said, looking forward to seeing his finish from tonight.

I would have much rather seen the Guida fight than Sakara / Irving

They chose that one just because of the potential fireworks, but it turned out to be a bit of a dud.

GOOD FANPOST! DEAN GOT IT RIGHT.

Dean definitely did a good job. Especially not getting fooled by Paul’s sneaky move. I think it helps to have referees who’ve had some fighting experience when it comes to making judgements like that.

I’ve seen in several sports where athletes have tried to ‘put on over’ the ref, but thanks to logic and experience, the ref makes the right call.

Oh, I agree the ref’ in the Howard fight took a lifetime to get there. He needs to position himself better while in the cage. He was a few steps too far away in my opinion.

by higgledy-piggledy on Mar 22, 2010 8:06 AM EDT reply actions

my thoughts

-over his career, congo has thrown SO many illegal knees.
-while i am certainly still an active member of the JDS hype train, he seems like his success has been based on his speed and power more than amazing boxing technique… he seemed a little flatfooted and somewhat static movementwise. but maybe thats most people at HW i suppose
-jones=yes

by phantasma475 on Mar 22, 2010 9:34 AM EDT reply actions

Well

I think it’s a misconception that being flat on your feet is necessarily terrible boxing technique; Tyson walks with both feet planted firmly on the ground, it’s just a matter of punching for power as opposed to dancing circles around guys. JDS has good movement, but likes to dig in and throw fast, powerful combos, and I think that’s why Gabe was able to get off a few good leg kicks. But when you have timing, power, and accuracy like Junior, it’s not that much of an issue to take a leg kick or two in exchange for a good left hook counter.

He uses good angles and tries to hurt guys with his punches, every strike he throws has the intention of dynamiting his opponents defense apart and doing damage.

also notable was Rosenthal’s job on the JDS>Gabe stoppage. perfect reffing technique. UFC should just request Dean, Rosenthal, and Yamasaki to ref all their fights. Other than Big John, who’s still persona non-grata with the UFC, those three are by far the best

Shoulda read this before I posted mine. Right on. Also, I think coming off a win Kongo is not going to get Gonzaga coming off a loss, although I do like that match up. I say set him up with JDS while he’s waiting for the top 4 to sort out their title shots. Also, I agree on your assessment of Jones’ chin. That up kick was brutal and aside from it lookeing it his jaw got jacked, it didn’t seem to phase him.

my only question about the reffing is ...

where the hell was the ref in the Howard fight he was on the other side of the ring for no reason

by fanaddict on Mar 22, 2010 12:49 PM EDT reply actions

From my understanding Paul caught a lucky break with the finger incident. Herb asked if he had a equipment malfunction and was ignored. He let the doctor come in and looked like he was ready to call it. Is it because it was a minor joint that possibly he let it go? I am sure he has some discretion but it looked to me like they were trying to hide what was really wrong from Herb. I think he knew what they were doing though and was conflicted about calling the fight.

by YoungGun on Mar 22, 2010 1:49 PM EDT reply actions

I think he saw what happened finally and wanted to give Paul a chance to fix it, because it was obvious Paul wasn’t bothered by it, and just wanted to put it back in place. It looked like it was the top part of his pinky that was dislocated too, if someone can get a screen grab, right before the second doctor comes in, you get a clear shot at it, and it looks like it was just the top part. Dislocations gross me out, so I remember much squirming on my part.

Pretty underwhelmed with the action .

you know, I’ve been wanting to grumble abuot this event for a couple days so I’ll just go ahead and do it. The fights were pretty anticlimactic and the main things we were all looking forward to seeing didn’t happen at all. Remember what we were looking forward to? great striking exchanges between the head hunter and Kongo. And, surely we would be treated to something exciting an innovative from Jones and Vera. Nope , just 2 strong TD’s and an elbow delivered with the force of a hammer to vera’s orbital bones.
I wasn’t dissapointed with JDS and Zaga cause it went down as I expected Although JDS had a moment of weakness he quickly recovered.
The only thing that would bring me down more would be Mir KO’ing Carwin in round one and GSP getting an early/premature GnP stoppage.
