UFC on Versus Results: Junior Dos Santos Pounds Gabriel Gonzaga
Dos Santos, the fast rising heavyweight star met Gonzaga, the former title challenger in a highly anticipated bout on UFC's Versus debut. Inside one round, it was clear that Dos Santos will continue his rapid rise, beating the formidable veteran with a vicious right hand followed by brutal ground and pound.
Gonzaga threatened leg kicks and used footwork to control the cage initially. Dos Santos scored to the body only to eat a leg kick. Then Gonzaga shot for a take down and Dos Santos spun away and got back to his feet immediately. Dos Santos fired to the head and body with punches and took control of the dance on the feet. Then Dos Santos began firing kicks, high and low. Dos Santos began to fire hard punches to Gonzaga's head. Gonzaga went for one leg kick too many and ate a hard KO shot. Dos Santos followed him down and continued the beating until Josh Rosenthal finally dove in and stopped the carnage. Gonzaga was out cold.

If Velasquez doesn't get the title shot...
…then give Cain to JDS. Winner gets next shot after Lesnar and the winner of Mir/Carwin.
And potentially killing one future title contender
I like to see JDS and Cain fight but I doubt this will happen anytime soon.
That's how number one contender matches work...
They sacrificed a potential contender in Nogueira to Cain and they will sacrifice a potential contender in the Mir / Carwin loser… They have enough challengers at the top to justify it right now.
JDS vs Cain please

Totally agree with Cain-JDS
Next shot at the title after Carwin/Mir. What’s the problem?

I was a JDS fanboy before this fight
He’s quickly becoming my favorite fighter in the UFC. Let him fight the Carwin-Mir winner, then give him a title shot.

I wanna see how he handles a big wrestler before I call him a future champ.
With Lesnar, Carwin and Velasquez at the top of the division he will need to fight off his back. I know we saw him get up once, but getting up from underneath those big guys will be tough. JDS is a small HW compared to them… He is one of my favorite prospects though.
Brock Lesnar will not be champ in 2011.
Mir, Carwin, Cain, and JDS can all take his title.

They are viable threats, that is for sure...
All four of them should be able to out strike Lesnar at this point. It would be really interesting if Cain or Carwin scored a takedown and we got to see Lesnar work from his back. Mir’s size should help him find room to work from the bottom and obviously, JDS could do some serious damage on the feet. Can he defend takedown from a world class wrestler though?
JDS has proven himself to be a top notch striker. However, we still haven’t seen him on his back. He needs a wrestler or two before I start calling him the next champ.
How can JDS take Brock’s title? There’s no way to know how JDS handles a real wrestler. Not to mention that Brock is the best wrestler with a huge weight advantage. I’m not sold on JDS yet.
His striking is spectacular. Would like to see him and AA go at it .
Not just Brock, Cain and Shane will test his chops on the ground.
I’m surprised they hav’t fed him some sort of wrestler given what sits at the top of the division. As talented as he is, we don’t know what those match ups will look like. There is every possibility they will look like Kongo / Cain or even Mir / Lesnar II. JDS isn’t a bit HW that also puts him at a disadvantage.
Cigano should have gotten a title shot already.
How many people does he need to finish?
If he fights Brock he is going to take him out of his element like everyone else he has fought and get knocked out.
He might lose in a boring five decision. Maybe.
I love Cigano but..
He has yet to fight a hi-class fighter that would merit him a title shot. Don’t worry he’ll get one soon..
He has done more than Carwin and Carwin was deemed ready months ago.
It is all a matter of situation and timing. If it wasn’t for the glut of contenders, JDS would be in there.
Great win for Dos Santos he followed a good gameplan didn’t jump right into Gonzaga and picked his spot to explode and get the finish.
But very disapointing performance again for Napao, my frustrations continue with him in these big fights he got too predictable and sloppy with his kicks and with Dos Santos hand speed that was a bad recipe.
An impressive win
but, ultimately, did he show us anything we haven’t seen in all his other fights? I thought for a second we’d get to see his ground game, but Gonzaga just didn’t have a good enough grip to complete the takedown. A great W, to be sure, but I don’t know that we learned anything new about JDS.
Who cares if we learn anything new
it’s his fault the fights don’t get a chance to get taken to the ground? If he’s recking people hes recking people, should he just drop down and put himself in a potentially compromising position just to prove a point?
"That's right I'm into hardcore crack, that's why my teeth are so bad"
no he gets a plus for that for sure. Problem is there are people who know how to wrestle. It is hard to determine how good JDS is until he encounters one.
To my mind you could say the same thing about Brock Lesnar… we really haven’t seen him fight a great striker, so let’s hold our tongues until he does. JDS got taken down and popped right back up; you could say that’s because Gonzaga didn’t have a good hold on him, or you could say that JDS knows what he’s doing.

We may not have seen Lesnar against a great striker, but we have seen him fight enough people to know he is gonna take down whoever is infront of him.
I am a big JDS fan, but the fact is, he is undersized compared to some of the other guys and doesn’t have an extensive wrestlin or BJJ back ground. His ground game and his take down defense are both very much unknown and those will be the deciding factors in any fight vs the takedown happy Lesnar or Velasquez… probably Carwin too.
My point was that you can’t know until you find out. He might be a little lady on the ground and lose against anybody who takes him down… or he might be amazing on the ground and have ridiculous submission skills; or maybe he has the ability to pop back up at will. It’s an open question right now… but my post was in regards to p123 saying we can’t know how good JDS is until he faces a great wrestler; my point being that it doesn’t matter if he is always winning. Like I said, you don’t know until you do.

My point is that until he beats a wrestler he will still have some question marks.
Handling a wrestler will be very important in a division with Lesnar. Until we see him handle a wrestler we don’t know how he will handle a wreslter and we cannot determine his ceiling…
you don’t know until you do
"Carnage"?
I think we should reserve that word for fights that involve blood and gore and guts all over the canvas. So just put it in your “B.J. Penn” template next to “flexibility” and “whining.” :-)
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.

gonzaga was scared to attempt takedown.
After the first takedown, Gonzaga didn’t shoot again. He didn’t want to eat another shot coming in.That will happen to any wrestler. Brock and Junior almost have the same record. Brock has fought two champions and lost once to tapout. Junior has fought #1 contender, Pride Champion and x title contender. The only difference is that Dos Santos has been knocking guys teeth to the back of their throat.
