UFC on Versus Results: Cheick Kongo Molests and Abuses Paul Buentello

Photo

Two veteran UFC heavyweight sluggers met in the second fight on the UFC on Versus. Cheick Kongo showed that the modern UFC heavyweight division bears no resemblance to the notoriously weak division where Paul Buentello once challenged for the title.

Kongo took down his opponent again and again and battered him with knees and punches until Buentello could take no more and tapped out in the third round.

Paul Buentello came out showing a lot of movement and looking to be in very good shape. Cheick Kongo immediately shot in for the take down. With four minutes left, Kongo planted Buentello on his ass. Buentello fought his way back to his feet only to get slammed hard immediately by Kongo. The pattern repeated again near the two minute mark. Kongo scored with knees to the belly and then they separated. Buentello immediately jammed his right pinky and had to be examined by a doctor. The fight was allowed to continue. After some quick trading, Kongo shot in again and got a double leg slam followed by a few knees to the body of the prone Buentello. Ref Herb Dean stood them up at the 0:15 mark. Kongo quickly got atop a prone Buentello and ended the round throwing leather at his downed opponent.

In round two, Kongo opened with leg kicks, forced Buentello to back up against the cage and scored with punches standing before taking Buentello down and landing some serious ground and pound. Kongo was cautioned for throwing 12 to 6 elbows to Buentello's butt. Then Kongo landed an illegal knee to the face of a downed Buentello. Herb Dean deducted a point from Kongo. Kongo immediately shot in and got Buentello down when the action resumed, immediately landing hard knees to the body. Then Buentello stood and Kongo landed hard punches before shooting in and again taking down Buentello. Kongo began landing knees standing to Buentello's face when Paul deliberately touched a hand to the canvas to make the knees illegal. Kongo landed two before Dean stopped the action briefly. But Dean knew the score and didn't call another foul. Then Kongo battered Buentello standing before taking him down again for more ground and pound. Dean restarted the action and Kongo forced his prey against the cage again.

Kongo did it again to start the third round. Immediate take down followed by ground and pound. Kongo began landing hard elbows to the flank of Buentello and got a tap out from Buentello. The announcers were saying the elbows were to the thighs, but the camera angle seemed to show the point of Kongo's elbow landing near Buentello's kidneys.

The Frenchmen Cheick Kongo has beena formidable gatekeeper in recent years but he's never put together a title run. The Texan Paul Buentello was a one time title challenger several years ago when the division was much weaker. He briefly held the Strikeforce belt before losing it to Alistair Overeem. He returned to the UFC recently and lost his first fight to Stefan Struve by decision.

Buentello is officially a feeder fish for the heavyweight prospects and fighters looking to make a rebound like Kongo. Buentello just isn’t big enough to be a UFC heavyweight anymore. The game has vastly changed, Buentello hasn’t.

I couldn't have said any better

Although Paul was too small. Kongo should have finished him off earlier. There was too much of a mismatch. He was raped.

How about Kongo vs. Gonzaga? Gonzaga can test Kongo’s take down defense and they’re both strikers so it could be interesting?

by MikeD32 on Mar 21, 2010 11:34 PM EDT reply actions

Very disappointed in this fight. Sure I know it is MMA. This fight was supposed to be a good striking fight. Kongo was not interested in geting into that when he had a clear advantage.

Kongo fought the right type of fight but just left me sour.

When you put two strikers together with no ground game I would like to see whos striking is better.

However this day and age if you have a weakness it is going to be exploited so can’t say much.

Kongo did what he had to do after 2 tough losses, he needed to come out and look dominant and that’s what he did. I think this might be it for Paul he was dominated and looked very outclassed in this fight he might be looking for another job after this beating.

I was so impressed with how Paul kept going throughout the asskicking. That guy is tough as nails and has heart; and no, I didn’t think I’d ever say that about someone who tapped due to elbows to the thigh.

by p123 on Mar 22, 2010 1:40 AM EDT reply actions

how you gone say what he was suppose do? he was suppose follow the damn gameplan and he did.. when they did stand paul still didn’t do shit but get tagged. paul tough but some of yall sound more impressed with the loser of the fight who got beat down and tapped out.. ppl gone make a million excuses for paul, get over it he got beatdown.

agree 100%. he was dominating why should he change what he was doing? makes no sense. if he had stood and lost the same people would have said he was dominating with the takedowns why did he stop, what an idiot!

Kongo must be watching super PJ's GSP

Kongo’s performance again reminded why I can’t stand GSP…Tackle and hold approach!

I just want to lodge a complaint here about Herb's call on the knees to the head.

I know a lot of people will agree with him that Paul was “playing the game” but:

a) Rules are rules. Cheick was throwing illegal knees and should have been penalized.
b) Paul put his hand down, thereby putting himself in a bad situation (one less hand to defend himself) in order to avoid a worse situation. Think of it like giving up the back to escape the mount.
c) If dude is willing to take a knee to the head from Cheick to “play the game” then I for one say let him do it.

Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.

I agree

though the refs don’t seem to mind “game playing” when a fighter repeatedly turns his head so he’s getting tagged in that nebulous expanse known as BACKOFTHEHEAD! In those cases, the loud warnings from the ref are almost pre-emptive. It’s lame, but it’s the rules, and it’s all part of fight strategy.

by Grappo on Mar 22, 2010 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

OH! And let me add:

d) he’s not necessarily putting his hand down to draw a foul and get another point taken away – he’s probably doing it so that Cheick would stop throwing the knees. The fact that Cheick didn’t? Point a.

I could be wrong but I think the point deduction is at the referee’s discretion. Herb did enforce the rules by stopping the fight and not allowing Cheik to continue to throw illegal knees.

Disagree

I liked how Herb handled that one.

a) the rules require that the ref stop the action in the event of a foul. They only require 5 minutes for low blows. For all others 5 mins is the max, and it is at the ref’s discretion.
b) Paul wanted out of that position. He was eating knees from Kongo and could very well have been finished there.so yes
c/d) his best case scenario is that Cheick sees the hand go down and stops, but given the choice between 1-2 more knees and knees-til-you-drop, he still came out better.

The real problem is that it’s a shitty rule. I don’t fault Paul, he did what he had to do. I can’t fault Cheick on that one (although when he lost a point I thought he very much deserved to) because there’s no way to be sure he saw the hand go down. And Dean operated within the rules without unduly disrupting the fight when a bad rule was exploited.

They shouldn’t have let Buentello stop the fight to pop his finger back in and rest.

The equipment excuse seemed dubious.
