UFC on Versus Results: Alessio Sakara Beats James Irvin in Odd Finish
The two middleweights were handpicked to deliver a slug fest to open the UFC's debut live show on the Versus network. And Alessio Sakara delivered but it wasn't 100% satisfying since the key blow looked to many (including Irvin) to be an eye poke rather than a punch.
The first minute was tentative, notable for a couple of jabs from Sakara and a low kick that caused a self-inflicted trip on Sakara. Irvin took center cage but wasn't throwing much. Sakara circled away and then came in to throw punches. He scored with a hard right to Irvin's face about 2:30 in. Then Sakara caught Irvin with what looked like an eye poke, but may have been a knuckle based on the replay. He went in for the kill but Referee Josh Rosenthal rushed in and gave Irvin the five minutes to have his eye examined.
But then Rosenthal declared the fight a TKO stoppage. Good call by the ref. No harm done in the end, although the live fans appeared confused and angered by the call.

yea that cut killed him. Jesus he looked so lethargic. I don’t think he can fight at 85 effectively regardless if this was his first fight or not. Irvin is a huge dude man he;s a huge 205er how the hell did he expect this work?
He just needs to lose some muscle mass (rather than just cut an extra 20 lbs of water)
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
To me, it looked like
Irvin just wasn’t fast enough to deal with Sakara’s striking, and after a few good shots snuck in he decided to play up the punch in the hopes that he could take a few minutes to regroup.
Given all that he’s been through (Worst. Luck. Ever.) I hope that he can get through this loss, avoid falling into the traps he has in the past, and move on to bigger and better things.
Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.
