Takanori Gomi: Baptized by Fire (highlight)

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've made a fanpost, I hope you are all well.

As you all know, at the end of this month, former PRIDE LW champion, Takanori "The Fireball Kid" Gomi will be making his debut at UFN 21 against Kenny Florian. I felt that the timing was perfect to introduce him to new MMA fans, or re-excite older fans about his arrival with a video tribute to his amazing run through PRIDE. Hopefully we get to see Gomi return to form on the 31st!

Star-divide

Let me know what you guys think, as I always enjoy reading your comments and criticism. Hopefully this gets you excited for the return of "the Fireball Kid"!

I've included other highlights I have made in the past below, in case you liked my Gomi one.

Mixed Martial Arts: "Don't Give Up On Me" (2009)

Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipović: The PRIDE and Glory (2009)

liked "Don't Give Up On Me" the best

all I can say is that I wasn’t the biggest fan of the music in the first one, but that’s just personal preference. My biggest complaint was that, besides the second one, they were very predictable. All the moments that are in everyother HL vid of Mirko and Gomi are there. Try to be more unique and original; not to say your videos are carbon copies of everyother HL i’ve seen, but do something to make your videos stand out among the hundreds of others.

Thanks for your honest criticism.

I really do appreciate the feedback and I’m grateful that you were willing to tell me what you really think. I’ll try in the future to be as original as possible in the future, but it’s hard when there is so limited footage and hundreds of other highlights out there. I will keep that in mind though. Thank you again!

Ya it is really hard to make HL videos unique.

The only advice I can give is to try synching things to beats in the music, or adding effects to the video when a vicious strike connects ie. when Gomi levels Pulver with that left hook have the screen flash brighter. Just little things like that make seperate good HL reals from ones that I favorite and watch over and over.

?

I am not sure if you noticed, but I would say that 95% of the footage in this highlight is synced with the music — whether it is the drums, shifts in the synth/guitar, or the lyrics. I don’t like overusing effects and I think I used them when appropriate.

ya maybe i missed it

the music kinda ruined it for me I guess, but like I said that’s just me.

Speaking as someone who doesn’t watch a ton of HLs and wouldn’t know what’s predictable, I thought the Gomi HL was great.
For me, the song choice definitely helped. I was literally just talking to someone last night about how underrated White Pony is.

One thing I realized while watching: if Gomi wins in the UFC, he won’t have a turnbuckle to celebrate on and nearly fall off of.

Which reminds me that I never posted this, and this seems as good a place as any to dump it:

Thanks man and great pic! lol

It’s hard to avoid predictability in a highlight when everyone knows the subject’s (fighter’s) career so well. Maybe Gomi can stand on the cage? I love how there’s always one small Asian guy behind him holding him by his shorts when he stands on the turnbuckle lol.

That’s a pretty cool song too… but I just love how they made the video for Rocket Skates.

Thanks Brent and Nate.

I really enjoy reading your commentaries on the front page, great work guys.

Just curious, but how do you guys (and the rest of BE) think Gomi and Florian match-up?

I noticed when putting this highlight together that Gomi attacks the body more frequently than pretty much anyone in MMA. He also excels at catching kicks and countering with his straight left. That could be a bit problematic for Kenny who fights southpaw and throws the round house kick with his left leg which leaves him open to the straight left.

I think Gomi has a great chance of winning if the fight stays standing, but on the mat KenFlo takes it. Can’t wait!

I think Gomi in his prime would win 7/10, but now not so much. Kenny is becoming an absolute beast, and it seems he has picked up some punching power training in Montreal (as seen at 107 when he dropped Guida).

Prime Gomi leaves a hole in Florian’s head and several indentations in his torso. Now? I’m really not sure. This is a measuring stick fight. If Gomi blast through Florian, he’s got a chance against Penn. If he gets outworked or completely clowned, then he’ll get someone like Guida next.

Gomi leaves his hands down alot.

IDK if thats a good idea against a guy like Florian, but Gomi has serious power. And a sneaky uppercut that does some rediculous damge when it connects.

Should be a great fight

Two Thumbs Up

Thought the Gomi HL was very good. That music i can’t recall who that is but i remember listening to it like hell back in Jr. High. LOL
I liked the progression through his career but wish you had the knee KO to Ralph Gracie i believe.

by pRoXiMo on Mar 21, 2010 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

Thanks bro, much appreciated!

But the Ralph Gracie KO is the very first shot once the fight footage begins! lol

I only excluded the Jadson Costa, Jean Silva, Golyaev, and Kitaoka fights (and his Shooto fights, but I wanted to focus on his PRIDE career, when he became a real star).

And yeah, Deftones is old school! lol, a great song though IMO.

Sounds like you’re a good Uncle man. When I have kids of my own, they will be breastfed with PRIDE events. Wow, did that ever sound wrong? haha

I’m a big fan of Gomi. He has a big hill to climb with Kenny but if he can pull it off it will give the LW division a shot in the arm.

by logan00 on Mar 22, 2010 2:34 AM EDT reply actions

Definitely

I would love it if Gomi comes over and goes on a tear. Motivation and conditioning has definitely been a problem for him since he beat Ishida, but if he can put those issues behind him and return to form, he could very well make big waves at LW.

Great HL. Me likely.

Gomi vs Florian should be a great fight. But with the current progression of Florian, I think he will beat all LWs out there not named Penn. Watching your HL gets me reminds me of old school Gomi.

Thanks Vivero!

Highlights (especially ones of PRIDE fighters) tend to make me nostalgic and I treat them as a service to the fighters and their fans. Glad you liked it. :)
