UFC on Versus Preview: Has Brandon Vera Succeeded in Cracking Jon Jones' Facade of Maturity?
Jon Jones is only 22 years old. He's a father of two. He's a professional mixed martial artist whose career is on the rise. This Thomas Gerbasi piece from UFC.com paints a portrait of an almost preternaturally mature young man:
Yes, he's only 22 years old. But maturity like that doesn't come overnight; it's developed over years and years, and for Jones it came from not only his family, but his mentors and coaches.
"It was just the way I was brought up," he said. "My wrestling coach in high school, Mr. Jack Stanbro, he always taught us to act with class no matter what happens. I've taken losses before in my wrestling career, and he was the type of coach where every time we showed up at a meet we had to dress up in a suit and a tie and if we lost he would never want to see bad sportsmanship shown. It's who I am, it's embedded deep within me, and it's what I've been raised around."
...
"I have to realize that I've got kids at home, so it really keeps me in the house and keeps me grounded," said Jones, who has two children with his fiancée Jessie. "If I don't make it in this sport, I put my family in jeopardy. I can't afford to lose, and I can't afford to not take this seriously."
He's not just mature, but he's also a student of the game. In a sport where too many fighters refuse to game plan or study tape on their opponents, Jones is a grind who logs hour after hour watching his opponents:
"I felt like I had Matt Hamill figured out," said Jones. "I watched so much film on him that I knew his tendencies, then I got his timing down, and I knew when he'd drop his hands, or when he'd do this or that. I had a lot of faith in my training camp as well. We have great strategists and that started things off, and we've got guys who worked on specific techniques, attacked my weaknesses, and emulated my opponent."
Jones also has a religious fervor when it comes to watching film, and with Vera having 11 UFC fights thus far, that's plenty of footage for him to dig in to.
"That's why the Brandon Vera fight is so exciting because I've watched every one of his fights," he said. "I've watched all of his losses at least 50 times. I've studied his tendencies, what it takes to make him break, all that stuff."
But Jones' behavior at yesterday's weigh-ins showed more in common with Diego Sanchez than Randy Couture, per Steve Cofield:
Jon Jones has been unflappable to this point in his young UFC career. The kid is only 22 years old and carries himself in and out of the cage like he's had 15 fights with the promotion. There's always a calm about him. That was until today when showed a little too much emotion during the weigh-in for his fight against Brandon Vera. Jones got in Vera's face prompting UFC president Dana White to separate the fighters. Jones was still bouncing off the walls during a quickie interview with UFC analyst Joe Rogan.
Is there reason to worry about Jones? Is the pressure finally getting him? Jones said he's fine, it's just that Vera rubs him the wrong way.
If Brandon Vera truly has gotten inside the head of the much-hyped Jon Jones, he's already landed the first scoring blow of the fight.
We'll find out tonight if Jones can shrug it off or not.
Video of the scuffle is in the full entry.

Jones also said he doesn’t like Brandon Vera as a person in the interview with Cofield.
Vera hasn’t “gotten inside the head” of Jones. Jones just doesn’t like him or his arrogance.
A fighter getting in another fighters face. You would think they were going to fight or something. Oh wait, they are.

I would dislike vera too if I . . . . .
had to watch all 11 of his fights

Jon Jones showed more aggression at the weigh-ins than Brandon Vera will during the entire fight.

"The second coming of Jesus Christ"
This statement is going to get Vera’s ass kicked.
Walking the line between intelligence and ignorance since 1985
@deowade
To any other guy it'd be a compliment
But Jones is Über religious.

Haha, probably. I bet that Vera didn’t expect Spanish Inquisition after that statement.

“Uber” religious people have children out of wedlock? Not trying to be a dick, but you can’t pick and choose what parts of a religion you are going to follow and then proclaim yourself to be a devout follower of that religion.

Whoa whoa
before we start going into something here remember this was just speculation on the part of a couple of people. As far as the context in which he brought it up it seemed less about it being offensive religiously and more about it being that Veras calling him all hype, but yes a large number of religious people kind of like to pick and choose.
"That's right I'm into hardcore crack, that's why my teeth are so bad"
I find it funny how that he thinks Vera's "trash talk" is disrespectful, and arrogant..
That is not trash talk dude… Imagine if he had to face Mir, or Chael.

i think Jon's nerves are getting the best of him for the first time.
Brandon hasn’t come off as disrespectful to me…
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
Jones' dad is a minister
so the “second coming of Jesus Christ” probably upset him

Not to mention....
This will be his 12th fight since April of ‘08. That’s nuts for somebody already in the upper echalons of the UFC LHW division.
Wanting to kick Brandon Vera’s is a pretty common response to being within 4 feet of him.

Yet no less untrue
Keep blowing that Brandon Vera horn Anton, it’s not gonna make him any better of a fighter.
doesn't make those jokes any more funnier though.
that was my only point… at least Ubernoober remains refreshingly original with his fishbob criticisms.

I'm pulling for Vera because I want to believe, but Jones is going to win this.
I’m on the hype train. I can see Jones being Shogun 2.0 in the next 2-5 years.
Was anyone else holding their breath hoping neither would get injured for this fight?
same with JDS vs. GG, i just can’t believe we get to see these fights on free TV… I mean we sacrificed AJ, but his hype train was derailed by Kos already. These are two fresh hype trains cruisinnnggg right now vs. two solid, proven contenders. Im giddy
Actually I’ve been more worried about GSP for the last week or so for some reason, don’t know why but I kept getting this feeling like he was gonna get hurt training.
yeah, that would be crushing but i’m assuming at this point in camp he’s through all the hard sparring sessions

What are people seeing in this kid?
I like Jon Jones, he’s very entertaining, he’s handled his previous opponents beautifully. But what the hell are people talking about — what is this ‘facade of maturity’? This guy is a big, athletic KID, with good Greco. Yeah that clip showed it, but so has every other time I’ve seen this guy.
This hype train is pushing the limits of zealous fervency. I’m starting to hope that Jones wins — I have no desire to see the crumbling of time/space.

What are people seeing in this kid?
I lol’d the longest reach in UFC history, put on perhaps the most vicious clinic of Greco throws ever, smart, unorthodox, dedication, ect.
He also has 2 kids and a wife, thats the ‘facade of maturity’ people are talking about. Most prospects his age are more worried about partying, the fact that he is completly dedicated to MMA at 22 is mind blowing.

To be strict, Sylvia had the longest reach (86).

This is wtf I was talking about before. Shit is hilarious, now having two kids with a woman thats not your wife is a sign of maturity.

No its not. Getting a job after you get out of college is what most college grads do. Its no more “mature” to get a job because you have a family than if you don’t.
Having unprotected sex when you don’t have the means to support children is immature. Doing it twice is…? I give the guy props for taking care of his kids and marrying their mother, but all this talk of him being very mature is simply spin.

I'm not saying he is anymore mature then anyother college grad, but this is MMA.
By MMA standerds he is mature for the stage he is in. Your missing the point, he is 22 and is completly dedicated to his MMA career. Can you say the same for Vera? Vitor? Penn? All of whom had ridiculous potential.
Young prospects have a bad history of throwing away their younger years and coasting by on their talent and youth alone.
All that I’m trying to illustarate is that he has so much room to improve because he is so young and is taking his training seriously before he even reaches his prime.

To say JJ is mature for his age without qualification is demonstrably false. I’ll accept your point that JJ is mature for a young MMA fighter though.

But what the hell are people talking about — what is this ‘facade of maturity’?
If you watch his interviews, he’s very humble and has the right attitude toward learning, unlike Vera, who at this stage in his career was declaring that he would be the first to simultaneously hold both HW and LHW belts. See the scenes of Jones with his trainer on the preview show for a good example of this.

My 9 year old daughter would be very humble in an interview. Releasing adrenaline, during the weigh-ins, is a clear cut indication that he lacks maturity. For an example of how to conduct yourself in a weigh-in, see Brandon Vera. I really don’t get it — he’s about as mature as you’d expect from a 20 year old.
“Facade of Maturity” — what a laugh!

I give up
watch the video again, as Jones was stepping back you can clearly hear Vera saying something to him.
didn’t Vera call out the UFC LHW champ after his first fight in the UFC? The fact is compared to any fighter around his age Jones acts very differntly.

It's like the old children's story of the Old Bull & the Young Bull
as told to me by my grandmother at bed time:
There were two bulls sitting at the top of a hill underneath an oak tree, looking down on all the cows that were grazing
The young bull looked to the old bull and said, “I’m gonna run down there and fuck that heffer!”
The old bull turned to the young bull and replied, “I’m going to walk down there and fuck them all.”
Ah, I’ll never forget story time.
Faber, Florian, Nick Diaz, 'Mayhem', Mousasi, Fedor
jones may have let his emotions get the best of him ...
… but i find it just as telling, that as soon as dana broke them up, vera’s instinct was to try and calm the situation. can’t imagine too many elite fighters doing that in the same situation.
the more i think about this fight, the more i think it comes down to one thing: “killer instinct”. something i think vera has lost.
regardless of who wins, i just hope it’s a fun one.
Who cares?
I mean really, in the grand scheme of things does Jones being excited to fight really put a dent in his maturity?
People blow things out of proportion I guess. It’s not like he was shoving Vera and trying to get at him through security. And in my opinion perhaps emotion brings out the best in Jones.

And has anyone considered that MAYBE this was manufactured? I mean this is the first show on VS, a little extra hype the day before can’t hurt ratings.
I was thinking that too.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Dana was whispering to Jones to make it a little interesting for hype.
And I could have sworn that he has always had mind game tactics at weight ins anyways. I think it was him that did the “look away” stare down at UFC 100. Maybe he is trying to get in Vera’s head.
There is so many reason’s why he could have got in Vera’s face; so I think people saying “OMG Jones? I thought you were a robot? I have lost faith in your mental toughness!” is a little dramatic.

after watching the video, i thought Bones looked hella poised talking to Rogan, and the staredown was no different than Wandy vs. Chuck (or anybody else for that matter). This is hyping a fight, and it has me excited for tonight!

It just shows how crazy the Jones hype is
that if he shows some aggression at the weigh-in, he’s falling short of the image that he has in some people’s minds as some sort of warrior monk who is wise beyond his years. He’s pretty mature for a 22 year old fighter, but his DQ for illegal elbows should already point out the fact that he can let his aggression get the better of him. But better for a fighter to be aggressive than not.
