NCAA Wrestling Championships
As we have seen time and time again, many elite college wresters have made successful transitions to MMA. Dana White is among those who has repeatedly said wrestling is the best base to start out with for MMA. The NCAA division 1 championships wrapped up this weekend, and I think it is safe to say that MMA fans will be enjoy watching some of these same athletes in the near future. There were even a couple of familiar last names in the finals as Ben Askren's Brother Max won at the184lbs weight class, and Jake Rosholt's brother Jared finished 2nd at Heavyweight. These athlete's will have a decision to make with the Olymipics 2 years away, some may try to follow the dream to Olymipic gold, but many others will head into the increasingly lucrative business of MMA.

I don't know enough about collegiate wrestling
but maybe you could do a write up about the wrestlers who did well in the NCAA championships, especially the ones who look like they have an interest in MMA. Now that is something I would rec the hell out of
Supporting all Las Vegas MMA. Xtreme Couture- "The Best Never Rest!"
Go Gonzaga! G-O-N-Z-A-G-A
A couple months back I highlighted
two wrestlers at 149 who I thought could make the transition to MMA, Brent Metcalf and Darrion Caldwell. Metcalf won his second title in three years, but unfortunately Caldwell wasn’t able to participate after tearing his rotator cuff (iirc). Both of them could have bright futures in MMA at 155 if they so choose, but both are good enough to make a run at the 2012 Olympics as well.

Brent Metcalf is a BEAST
No idea if he has any interest, but dude’s a beast.

Only saw his final match, but Max Askren looked fantastic. Hope he follows his brother into MMA.
Also, Jayson Ness from Minnesota got #1 on Sportscenter’s Top Plays tonight. Thought that was pretty awesome.
every once in the whie espn shows some love to non mainstream sports
but 99.9% of the time its all yankees lakers cowboys lebron james and tiger woods
That was nuts
After he (Ness) got kneed in the dome I told my wife that he would win it. Was down 2-4 with less than a minute left, and came back with the TD and exposure, awesome.
That no-call in the 1st was ridiculous
Maybe the Iowa kid wasn’t pinned, but that was 5 points – TD and 3 NF.

Max Askren
Completely dominated Kirk Smith 10-3, it might be an unpopular decision, but I think he should aim for the 2012 Olympics before going for MMA.
Moving down to 184 from 197 was a great decision on Max’s part.
I don’t know that that would be unpopular at all. Ben tried his luck at the Olympics first as well. He’s still very young, I think he should be allowed to see how he does at an international level first.

Jay Borschel's match was awesome

I've never been interested in collegiate wrestling
but with my MMA knowledge constantly growing (and the number of fights available for me to watch increasing substantially over the past 2 years or so), I found myself COMPLETELY enthralled by the NCAA Championships this weekend. I found myself picking up on the nuances of the sport much easier than I ever have before, and I had a total BLAST watching on Saturday. Will definitely hope to follow the sport closer in years to come.
If you can't laugh at yourself... Who can you laugh at?
The Packers, that’s who.

What bothers me, is when people are referring to College Wrestlers, as world class wrestlers. Guys like Koscheck, Lesnar, Jake Rosholt, Cain Velasquez etc aren’t world class, they are competitive against other college wrestlers. It is way harder to make it on the international scene, it is way more competitive. Guys like Dan Henderson and Matt Lindland used to be world class wrestlers, nowadays they wouldn’t stand a chance. Mark Coleman and Tom Eriksson used to be world class wrestlers, both of them achieved great things in the world championships.
The best wrestlers today in MMA are probably Mohammed Lawal and Daniel Cormier
Koscheck and Rosholt were damn close to, if not, world-class at the times they finished college. Koscheck, however, has spent the last 10 years not working much wrestling, because he doesn’t need to do that to still have top level wrestling in MMA. had Kos decided to go to the international scene, he was considered to have a good chance to make the freestyle olympic team
Goldie: "Michael Jordan-esque in his grappling skills is Travis Lutter."
Rogan: "No, no he's not. No."
I’d add Ben Askren and Joe Warren to that short list
