Gegard Mousasi likely to sign a seven fight deal with Strikeforce:
"I have one more fight left on my contract, but we are planning to sign a new deal," Mousasi said.
"I'm being treated very well," he said. "I feel like I'm a part of the family, so there's no reason for me to go anywhere else. I fight also in DREAM, so I don't have any desires to go anywhere."

Aw darn, well we can still hope that the UFC out bids Strikeforce. He’d be a great addition to the shark tank.
That’s unfortunate. I think his legacy as a fighter would be better served by making a move to the UFC.
That’s peachy for Strikeforce, but since as a fan I would like see Mousasi fight Machida/Shogun/Rampage/Rashad, I really don’t care how good it is for Strikeforce.

Good for Strikeforce. Bad for fans who want to see Mousasi fight top competition.

What UFC fans need to Know...
Every time a fighter doesn’t sign with the ufc, its fans start to complain about how the fighter is missing out on top competition. But understand this, UFC doesn’t allow its fighters to fight outside the organisation. Mousasi signed a contract with SF that allows him to still fight on DREAM promotions. He wouldn’t get that sort contract with the ufc.
Apart from Randy Couture, it doesn’t seem as if fighters on ufc contracts get that many fights a year. Some fighters want to fight more regularly; especially if you can pick up more prize money too. MMA is not at the stage where all the fighters are making big bucks. Some fighters like the opportunity to fight more when it is possible.
Mousasi is probably making more money under his current fight strategy than his counterparts at the ufc because he’ll be fighting more than 2-3 fights annually. That’s assuming he doesn’t get hurt or suffers a loss.
More fighters should follow this multi-promotional-contract strategy because it gives you options as a fighter. If you are cut from one promotion because of a loss, at least you have another promotion to go to without having to start ‘shopping’ yourself again looking for a fight.
If ufc wants Mousasi they better cough up that cash and do it quickly, because as it stands, Mousasi is not looking desperate for a cheque (check). So if they want him, they better offer him a contract that is worth his while. if he gets past Mo (b/c Mo isn’t a walk over) and a few other fights, it will not be cheap for the ufc to sign Mousasi.

Its funny...
that speech is pretty legendary for Dana…but it was pretty average for stuff that went on all the time in the Army.
Good stuff.

You make some good points. I want to see him fight the best the UFC has. I’m tired of the whole system, I want to see the best fight the best. Until Gegard fights in the UFC there will always be a question as to how he would do. I believe Gegard is one of the best MW in the world. I understand he wants to fight LW and HW as well. In the long term, how many legit fights does he have outside the UFC? Moreover, if Gegard joins the UFC, and starts to run through the competition, he will be considered the best. Because he beat the BEST. Tell me what is a better fight. Gegard vs. Hendo or vs. Anderson Silva. Also, if you look at fighters like Koscheck and Clay Guida. They are very active fighters. I really don’t believe Gegard is worried about money. The UFC can promote and pay him better than anyone.
@Whardiek
I want to see the best fight the best too. But a lot of these promotions don’t let fighters fight outside the organisation they are signed to. So it will not always happen.
You are right, the UFC can probably pay Mousasi better than anyone out there. A fighter can also increase his value by beating everyone else out there before making the transition to the UFC. I think that way, he gets a contract that will reflect his value.
[whadiek] said “Tell me what is a better fight. Gegard vs. Hendo or vs. Anderson Silva.”
The UFC won’t give Mousasi an immediate title fight upon signing him. Hendo isn’t a walk over mind you, and that’s the same for Mo Lawal. If Mousasi gets past these two fighters then he’ll really be on fire. However, if he gets past Mo, I think he’s up to sign a new contract with SF. So this may be the time when the UFC may want to offer the guy a contract.
[whadiek] “… if you look at fighters like Koscheck and Clay Guida. They are very active fighters.”
I don’t think any UFC fighter fights more than 3 times a year. Guida & Koscheck didn’t fight more than 3 fights in 2009. You are only paid when you fight, so if your fights are limited to approx’ 3, you only get paid for the 3 fights you fight in. Mousasi has the option of fighting in future DREAM promotions. He fought approx’ 6 fights in DREAM in 2008.
You may make less per fight fighting outside the ufc, but you’ll definitely fight more frequently if you are signed to several promotions, and possibly make more money.

This is only a temporary problem. Strikeforce will fold in a year, two at the most so this is just a speed bump.
"My only hope is that the Big Lebowski kills me before the Germans cut my dick off."
probably right. he’s 24 and has 31 fights, never been KO’d, and most of his wins have been fast and dominant, suggesting he’s not taken a ton of damage. regardless of Strikeforce folding or not, 7 fights would hopefully take a max of 3 years, with him continuing to not sustain a ton of damage, putting him in the UFC at 27 or 28 as prepared as anyone has ever been upon their entry to the UFC….it would be awesome to see him right now, but the UFC will still be around and it will still be awesome in 3 years. he probably just wants a little more time before he signs a more strict contract, and will hopefully eventually decide the UFC is the right move.

Overeem
He is gonna fight 4 times in K-1. No way he fights 4 times in Dream Or Strikeforce. He can’t pass 4 drug tests in America.
come on
even with his reluctance to jump to the UFC, i don’t see Mousasi behaving like Overeem. He may fight a can every now and then in Dream, but he’ll usually be taking on at least halfway-respectable comp in SF

You are the one with Dana's nuts in your mouth.
I love this. Wake up and smell the coffee. If all the fighters are in UFC, we win. Honestly, I give 2 shits about Dream and Strikeforce. Bring the best to the UFC and lets see what happens. There are only a hand full of fights Dream or Strikeforce are able to have that keep me interested. UFC have more than I have time or space to explain. I would like to see the best fight the best. UFC is the only chance we have for this. Period.
^^^cry, i hope Strikeforce keeps moving forward

For me
Of course there are various reasons i think this is less than optimal, but mainly i find it disappointing because i think 7 fights of Gegard vs UFC fighters would be way better and funner to watch than 7 fights of him vs the kind of competition he’s going to find in SF or Dream.

yeah, i’m curious about that myself. other than the inevitable hendo matchup, i’m not all that familiar with strikeforce’s 205 division.
you’re not familiar with their 205 division, well, because they don’t have one.

that might be a big part of it
Seems like a good idea for him, if he isn’t completely sure whether he wants to stay at LHW or go to HW, to keep competing in Dream and SF.

Especially since he already fought (and beat) Sokodjou, Babalu and Manhoef.
That (should) take away three options right there.

Rich Franklin and fighters like him should leave UFC as hes obviously not a viable contender to get the title back, he might as well make some money in strikeforce and rack up some wins.. as opposed to making some money in UFC and racking up some losses
Let me guess.

More importantly
What happens to his stock if he loses to Mo? Loses to Hendo?
I respect that Mousasi has a long-term plan, but the risks of 7 fights in SF/Dream – fighting UFC castoffs and relative unknowns (in the US), fluke losses, injuries, etc. – to me far outweigh the benefits.

More people can emerge you know. The current talent level is not set in stone. A new star could emerge from various ranks.
You're right...
that talent will emerge in the UFC.

I’m not sure the UFC is offering significantly more than he makes with DREAM/Strikeforce. Plus he seems to enjoy working with these promotions, which goes a long way.
If he becomes an even bigger star the UFC might come in wth some silly money and he might decide to accept it then.
It might be smart of him signing with SF. When the UFC absorbs them, they will absorb this huge contract.

Gary Goodridge!
No but his best wins are probably Hector Lombard, Jacare and Manhoef at Middleweight, Cyborg Santos and Sobral at LHW. Very respectable record for a young fighter. His best days are still ahead of him so just be patient.
People might laugh at me for this, but I still think that Soku is a respectable win. Say what you want about him, he’s dangerous and he’s the who’s who of MMA so that should figure into his less than stellar record.

There is no shame in losing to the Super HLUK Champion of the Universe. Soko can still cause problems for a lot of LHWs. Well, for one round anyway.
