Gilbert Melendez & Shinya Aoki Talk About Their Upcoming Title Fight:

Melendez: "My biggest advantage in this fight is my stand up and my patience. I’ve been fortunate enough to see the Aoki style. I’m just going to be patient and let it happen. I think I can knock this guy out in two rounds... I’m really happy to have this fight on CBS. Millions of people will be watching and, yeah, it definitely makes a difference. To me it’s a coming out party to display my skills to the world."

Aoki: "I feel I’m representing DREAM and also Japan... He’s a very aggressive fighter... It’s going to be a very quick fight, a quick submission or a quick knockout, but either way it’s going to be a personal fight... He’s a top-ranked fighter in the United States but I can take his pressure and I’m going to beat him and take back two world title belts to Japan."

I cant wait to see this fight. I think Aoki got this one, i dont think Melendez striking is as good as he thinks. Not to say Aoki will beat him standing up, just that Aoki wont get KTFO.

HI YAH!

Agreed. Aoki has done well against some strikers.

Alvarez is a better striker than Melendez, but Melendez is fairly well rounded. HE can wrestle, grapple and strike. Can he decide where the fight takes place and ride it out to a decision?

I’ve got Melendez putting a very big hurting on Aoki. But I thought that aboot Aoki/Cavalcante as well.

Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.

I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.

This is one of the reasons I want Aoki to win..

by Pooman on Mar 18, 2010 9:24 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Speaking of that two titles. I am assuming Aoki’s DREAM title isn’t up grabs in this bout is it?

Aoki can take the Strikeforce belt back to Japan but Melendez has no chance at the DREAM belt in this fight. Something about that just doesn’t seem quite right. Is that a fair exchange?

Just BE.

Is that a fair exchange?

Yep. Dream fights are fought under different rules.

by truck on Mar 18, 2010 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

yea, this is the one type of situation where I think non-title fights are ok.

It doesn’t make sense for Aoki’s belt to be on the line with elbows on the ground and without a 10 minute first round and his magic pants.

by Phildo on Mar 18, 2010 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

SF doesn’t have elbows on the ground.

my bad, the other points stand.

Ahhhh… yes I wasn’t thinking about those things off the top of my head when replying.

Somehow I can see this developing into a conflict between the two organizations or more likely a fighter and one of the promotions though. It just seems like another possible scenario for a conflict to occur in the sharing of talent between them.

Just BE.

If Aoki wins he will call out American MMA and talk about Japan being number 1.

He will probably flip off Coker, flip off the fans and he will be booed out o the building…

If you're not excited for this one...

Until you said that I thought that was Sakuraba under all of that.

I think the cage is going to play a big part in this one.

Does Aoki’s gym even have a cage?

Being stuffed up against the cage and not being able to maneuver is a HUGE adjustment for a submission fighter. It’s hard to pull off slick submissions when you can’t move your hips.

Hmmmm

I’m starting to doubt Aoki, but I did the same with him against Hirota…Keichi Sasahara 2010 time?

this’ll be good.

That’s the fight to see in April.

This one and Aldo / Faber are my top two for the month.

There are lots of big fights in April though. Two UFC titles, two WEC titles and three Strikeforce titles are on the line. Maybe a Dream belt will be added if DREAM 14 is a go for the 24th.

Add in four weeks of Bellator and four weeks of TUF, April is gonna be awesome…

If Aoki can pull off...

an arm bar from the butt scoot position, then I would be in Heaven. :D

Jack Bauer could get off the Lost island in 24 hours.

How about a sweet heel hook or ankle lock...

If he could launch himself upwards into a fly scissor heel hook that would be amazing…
