Tito Ortiz is back home:

"Nice to be home. They put 6 bags of fluid in me. I'm better now. I lost 15lb. I though I had swine flu but I didn't. Just a really bad flu."

Eh, isn’t the swine flu just a milder flu?

by grein on Mar 17, 2010 12:11 PM EDT reply actions

Its actual not much different than the regular flu except...

that it’s lethal zone is in age ranges that are usually resistant to the season flu.

In other words, instead of older people dying from H1N1, like the normal seasonal flu, its the 30’s and younger crowd.

Six bags of fluid in Tito? Jenna has had more

swine flu was stupid. my doctor told me he wasn’t telling people they had swine flu because there was no alarm for the panic.

Are you sure.

Or could it be that the full spectrum response kept the virus from getting out of control? (Un) Fortunately we will never know.

With Swine Flu the treatment is the same as...get this...

REGULAR FLU!

I HAD IT! It was really rough! I threw up a bunch and had to keep drinking fluids and stay hydrated.

Instead we rushed out another god damn vaccine that people don’t need for a virus that can be treated by drinking fucking water.

but that’s neither here nor there. It’s just good to know that Ortiz is fine.

I’m not trying to get into some full debate here, but that is a bit dismissive of the medical situation. Perhaps the parents of some of the kids who died from H1N1 should have just given their kids more water…

Influenza has a higher morality rate than SARS

Influenza has a higher mortality rate than West Nile.

Influenza routinely kills people. It’s sort of the one real disease people should be afraid of.

by Llewdor on Mar 17, 2010 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

There is a lot to be said for...

Fire breaks and herd immunity, and honestly a flu pandemic during an economic downturn can be catastrophic for a economy. Forget the possible deaths since like you said, it’s the flu, proper hydration is the best medicine, but it’s also a bit more severe, well severe enough to actually cause a few deaths in the 20-50 crowd, along with generally effecting people a bit longer than normal flu, around 1.5-2weeks.

However, it’s really important for the civilized world to stay ready for pandemics no matter how severe the actual virus ends up being. Otherwise we’re inviting a 1918 type incident when we have the technology to stop it.

At a certain point, just saying to rub some dirt on it and move on isn’t helpful. The fact that athletes in peak physical condition are hospitalized for the flu just goes to show how dangerous even a common bug can be.

This. In 1918, the flu that killed millions, was still a flu, just slightly more severe. There is a lot to be said for herd immunity. Prevention is a responsibility. Otherwise you risk spreading things to people that won’t survive.

I had the swine flu around the time when it first hit. got it from a coworker who came back from Mexico on a trip. It was probably the worst flu I’ve ever had, but I got through it.

seriously, making such a big deal out of the flu is somewhat of a dickish move. the whole “this is the hardest day of my life” etc. tweets made it sound quite a bit more serious than it was.

by kanodogg on Mar 17, 2010 12:14 PM EDT reply actions

i remember how miserable i was when i was the sickest in my life, i’ll never forget that. i also recall no going to work, not getting online, not turning on the tv, not eating, not tweeting, just laying down under blankets feeling awful.

Didn't Tito say it wasn't health related?

So being sick with the flu isn’t a health issue? Why all the cryptic tweets? What a drama queen. I hope he gets better.

Why can’t he fight Chuck? Isn’t that fight many months away?

Influenza

Proper flu – rather than a very bad cold – can be seriously life-threatening and often requires hospitalization as may folk write off the early stages as just having a cold.

by VikingPhotography on Mar 17, 2010 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

This.

When people say things like “I think I had the flu” I want to hit them. If you had the flu, you’d know it.

If you’re sick in bed, and you adjust your blankets to keep you warm, you don’t have the flu. If you had the flu you’d lack the strength to adjust your own blankets; you’d need help with that.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

by Llewdor on Mar 17, 2010 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

This...

Is hyperbole, influenza is basically the most adaptable organism on planet earth, it’s constant mutations making any concrete claims about “there is no way you could move” laughable.

Some strains are much more serious than others, some more mild. That’s the nature of the disease, and that’s before getting into the different genus of flu virus and how the B grouping has a widely varying severity level of the same virus among different people due to different levels of acquired immunity.

by Jacob Hayes on Mar 17, 2010 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually

If treated in it’s early stages you might not know you have the flu. The early stages of the flu are similar to those of the common cold. When someone gets the flu they don’t immediately lose the strength to adjust their blankets, that happens if they blow off early symptoms. So there’s nothing wrong with saying “I think I had the flu” because they could have, just prevented it from worsening.

by Polyhedron on Mar 17, 2010 12:18 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

No kidding it wasn’t swine flu, because that shit was hyperbolized to infinity by pharmaceutical company-endorsed researchers and doctors who just want you to buy their vaccine. Any kind of flu can kill you if you do not take care of yourself in a timely fashion.

It’s not surprising that Tito will hype anything up as long as it draws attention to himself, even if it means taking advantage of a potentially life-threatening illness. It’s a shame all the casual playboys buy pay-per-views that he’s on because I’m about ready for him to retire.

by xfreekx on Mar 17, 2010 12:21 PM EDT reply actions

i find its best to assume people wouldn’t lie/joke/use something as painful to so many people as a miscarriage. i’ll assume she had it and was acting irrational after the fact.
if it turns out she made it up, she is even more sick than anyone previously thought.

Get well soon, Tito. I want to see you get smashed with fists and shins, not viruses and bacteria.

So, this flu was enough for the Liddell vs Ortiz fight not to happen? If Ortiz is healthy right now, and with their proposed fight still two months away, I would assume that Tito can start a training camp with no real problems.

He also forgot to mention...

..his cracked skull, 6 vertebra that doctors never even heard of are damaged, the gap between his 5-6 molars, the brain deficiency that does not allow his body to move sometimes, he inability to have a 3rd child (oh, i went there), and his big a$$ head isnt big enough for his massive brain..

Im sure i missed something..

by Fighter 1 on Mar 17, 2010 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Tito could be something again...

But he really needs to develop some kind of striking game on his feet, and work on his take downs some more just to get some variation going.

No one wants to be in a GNP position from a “healthy” Tito even today, so he needs to develop that fear by getting better at the takedown again, and then using that fear by being able to let his hands fly ala GSP.

by Jacob Hayes on Mar 17, 2010 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Don’t you think if he was going to develop a striking game it would of happened already?

Obviously the flu virus slipped through the crack in his skull and infected his brain, that’s why he got so sick. Brain flu.
