Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Dcxb8y

James Irvin talks about his battle with methadone and oxymorphone:

"The Anderson Silva fight, I have 25 stitches across my cheek from when he blasted me," the mixed martial arts fighter told The Canadian Press. "Every day when I look in the mirror, I have a clear reminder of what those drugs did to me and what lies ahead of me if I was ever to start using that garbage ever again."

"It wasn't until a time that I just stopped taking them that I realized I needed them just to keep on functioning," he said. "At that time I had become an addict and I was hooked on them.

"I needed to get caught," he said. "I needed to get in trouble for it and wake me up and get off of those things."

"I'm trying to get [reach out] to fighters, but it's kind of a taboo thing," said Irvin. "I don't think fighters want to talk about it. Fighters definitely don't want to admit that they have a problem with it when it's obvious they do because more and more fighters are getting caught with the stuff and getting caught with it in them."

Isisnt methadone used to get people off harder drugs? i know of a few people who were perscribed it to overcome addictions.

HI YAH!

From USDA fact sheet:

Methadone is a rigorously well-tested medication that is safe and efficacious for the treatment of narcotic withdrawal and dependence. For more than 30 years this synthetic narcotic has been used to treat opioid addiction. Heroin releases an excess of dopamine in the body and causes users to need an opiate continuously occupying the opioid receptor in the brain. Methadone occupies this receptor and is the stabilizing factor that permits addicts on methadone to change their behavior and to discontinue heroin use.

However, methadone IS still a narcotic and IS addictive in its own right. It’s just less harmful and addictive than heavy opiates like heroin.

the only thing

more mild about methadone is the oral administration means it’s slower to take effect and doesn’t have the massive rush of injecting or snorting narcotics. But it’s totally deadly and addictive.

Methadone is given alot for real bad pain becasue of the giant half life it has the same reson its given to opiate addicts. And it won’t fuck you up if you take it like you are sapose to. I myself was on Methadone for about 18 months in my early 20’s for addiction. I started off on 80mg and went down about 10mg every other month until I got off of it. It worled wonders for me but some abuse it just like they do with other Opiates.

a family friend of ours OD'd on methadone

he was 18, someone gave him some to drink at a party. He was drunk already and I guess had no way to gauge how much methadone he had taken. It takes a long time to take effect so it’s a lousy recreational drug.

Methadone is real reasy to OD and die from it is not a drug to be taken for recreational use. If the person taking it does not have a prior tolerance to opiates for pain or addiction It is very lethal. I really hope the kids/people at the party who gave that methadone to your family friend were caught and are spending time in prison for manslaughter thinking about the life they took. Thats just crazy someone would do that to someone, Its almost certain it would kill someone who does not have a tolerance to opiates.

by Shocbomb on Mar 17, 2010 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

still not safe to be using it, regardless of whether it isn’t as bad as he harder opiates… wasn’t Anna Nicole Smith a huge methadone user?

by kanodogg on Mar 17, 2010 10:55 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

yea, but “not as bad as heroin” still isn’t all that good.

by Phildo on Mar 17, 2010 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

Indeed; there’s a whole range of things that are “not as bad as heroin” that I still want nothing to do with.

Getting hit by a slow-moving Volkswagon van – not as bad for you as heroin.

I didn’t get a chance to see Silva/Irvin. Was Irvin really that coked up during the fight? And would a clean & sober Irvin had a better outing versus The Spider?

by samuraisul on Mar 17, 2010 10:24 AM EDT reply actions

He certainly wasn’t “coked up”, but the fight did end almost immediately. It was hard to tell anything from that fight. But there was obviously something more than could be seen in the ring that was going on inside Irvin’s head.

Put it this way, if Anderson's striking did that to him on pain killers...

I’d hate to see his reaction to those strikes without.

The man started crying…if I remember correctly.

If your gonna lose to Silva.... take some drugs.

So now Irvin is saying he was doped up for his fight. Forrest Griffin said he was on ludes when he fought Silva. Next is Thales Leites coming out and saying that he was smoking China White for their match so he couldn’t stay on the feet, and Lutter came in over weight because he was smoking weed. Rich was drunk so he lost, and Dan was on cocaine.

Wasn’t Irvin tested positive for steroids after that fight?

No, painkillers.

by AJB on Mar 17, 2010 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Damn, I can’t imagine why there is so much Irvin hate today. Its hard to believe that his drug rehab is being overlooked because he lost a fight in a bad way to the best mma striker in the business.

With a Paulo Filho thread still on the page, it should be easier to admire a man who’s able to pull himself up by his boot straps so to speak…

by castleeb on Mar 17, 2010 11:02 AM EDT reply actions

Wouldn’t call it hate, but people are overlooking what he’s saying about his addiction and implying that he’s just trying to come up with excuses for the Silva fight. Predictable considering the people that frequent this board, but dickish nonetheless.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

by lowellthehammer on Mar 17, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I see one off-topic comment to that effect.

the only excuse one needs for losing to anderson silva, is “my opponent was anderson silva”

takes a lot to come out and discuss this type of stuff. props and respect to Irvin. fighters like everyone else can be addicted to painkillers. Rush Limbaugh was. And he doesn’t fight in a cage for a living.

Irvin wasn't making excuses

I didn’t read a quote from JI saying that was why he lost. Moreover, I didn’t read a quote saying he can beat Spider. It takes balls to admit your addicted to pills. I look at JI’s comments as a look to the future, not whinning about the past. He feels better and understands how messed up he was.

Personally, I'm still embarassed about picking Irvin over Silva.

Maybe I was on drugs too.

perhaps, but those drugs not as hard as those who picked forrest over silva.. and yes, there were a few that made that pick.

by kanodogg on Mar 17, 2010 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

People expected Griffin to be much larger than Silva, though, and worried he might use his larger size to keep Silva away. It’s an understandable mistake. Now, picking Irvin to beat Silva, that’s crazy talk.

Hey man. I can’t blame these guys. Fighting Anderson Silva is like meeting death. He is by far the scariest person to be locked in a cage with. I don’t think you could pay me enough to fight him. It would have to be never have to work again type of money. He doesn’t beat you he really steals your soul. I’m creeped out right now just thinking of him. I’m going to hide under my covers now bye.
