I somehow still believe in Paulo Filho

by ZephyrBrasil
.

Same here I hope Paulo can pull it all together and get back on track. They’ve trained together in the past, I wonder how those sessions went…
by CSKit

I don’t I’m a way bigger fan of Shango (especially at this point), and can’t personally understand why anyone would want Paulo to win at his expense.

by Blackout612

I’m just more a fan of Paulo. I’ve nothing against Lombard at all, I would just prefer Filho to kick whatever he’s going through and return to form.

Can we just call Filho ‘The Smashing Machine’ from now on? Two guys with huge potential that became overshadowed by their personal problems.

Without pain, without sacrifice, we would have nothing.

Difference is, Filho’s still winning fights.

Bellator was making such great moves

I don’t know why this surprises me as much as it does. Its not like Bellator hasn’t taken risks before. They did sign War Machine afterall.

??

You make it sound like they’re taking a huge gamble… I don’t get it.

If Filho wins, it’ll only be if he gets his shit together which means that he’s on weight, mentally sound, and on his game. Which would be a good sign. If he fights like he has been lately, then Lombard will probably just blast him easily or take home a nip & tuck decision.

Win/ Win for BFC. The only thing that can really go wrong is if Paulo misses weight, in which case they’d be well served to have a backup in hand (just in case)

That's why

I was saying that having a replacement on hand would be a good call.

He’s made the weight before, and maybe that’s what he needs to motivate himself again- a real cut. Because he just isn’t suited for 205

If Filho managed to get his shit in order for one fight, that doesn’t mean his problems are behind him.

Worst case, Filho does just that, comes in and wins, and then spirals out of control again.

It’s a bit of a gamble.

A) Does Paulo show?
B) Does Paulo make weight?
C) Does Paulo go into the cage without his “friend?”
D) What the hell happens if Paulo WINS?

Why would anyone want to do buisness with Filho?

He’s been constantly inconsistent for the better part of 2 years. I think this shows how strong the UFC’s position in the market is. Promotions are looking for headway however they can get it. Troubled quality fighters like Filho and cross over athletes like Walker.

by JimJoe on Mar 16, 2010 11:32 PM EDT reply actions

they’re a lot better off booking him for one fight than trying to put him in the tourney.

But a title fight still has risks, it will be harder to find a suitable replacement for a title fight on late notice than a regular fight.

by nastyem on Mar 16, 2010 11:32 PM EDT reply actions

Yea if he wins it could be disasterous. You think Overeem is bad for SF. That pale in comparison to have Filho as champ.

TELL ME

why Filho gets a title shot versus Lombard for the MW belt

yet Neer fights Alvarez in a non-title bout.

kinda shitty

by ADAMantium on Mar 17, 2010 1:24 AM EDT reply actions

I wouldn’t be surprised if that part was a mistake. I was under the impression that the super fights were non-title fights and the tournament winners got the title shots. Plus Bellator has been making a lot of really smart moves and risking giving a title to Paulo Filho isn’t very smart.

by simpsycho on Mar 17, 2010 1:40 AM EDT up reply actions

that’s what i was thinking as well.

Filho > Neer

Regardless of what you think about Paulo and/ or all non- UFC related MMA, the fact of the matter is that Filho has a much better record than Neer. Not to mention that Filho was literally considered a top 5 MW not too long ago

For the sake of Lombard's career

I really hope he wins, I’m desperate to see him fighting top 10 middleweights, who have been seriously lacking G’n’P since Tanner.

by Cam86 on Mar 17, 2010 1:36 AM EDT reply actions

Chael Sonnen, who is a Middleweight, has been winning all of his fights against very tough opponents utilizing constant GnP.

by chrisbboy82 on Mar 17, 2010 3:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but Tanner >>>>> Sonnen, so you shut up your face.

(Obviously you’re right; there’s several decent gnp guys at middleweight, and some guys who would probably win more if they utilized more gnp instead of sloppy kickboxing – Nate Quarry, looking at you… But I’m an acolyte of the Church of Evan.)

Stylistically, I think that Maia would beat Sonnen 9 out of 10 times.

by chrisbboy82 on Mar 17, 2010 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I disagree. I think if Sonnen could do it over again he would use his wrestling to keep it standing and while neither are great on the feet I would give sonnen the slight advantage.

i’m really not aquainted with Lombard. He looks in great shape and I know he’s the champ and I know he said he would like to fight Dan Henderson.

What’s good about this guy. Could he really compete with top 10 guys? Is Paulo his first really big fight involving a top ranked er a former top ranked fighter?

I’m guessing wreslter GNP like the guy said before but how does he stack up against the tough guys?

185 in UFC is kinda weak suprised this guy isn’t picked up.

by p123 on Mar 17, 2010 2:25 AM EDT reply actions

He’s the middleweight champ of Australia’s CFC organisation.
He competed at the Sydney 2000 olympics in Judo.
Dominant G n P artist.
He is all in all an absolute beast.

Someone at the Q&A before UFC 110 asked Dana if the UFC were interested in him and Joe Silva said they were interested but with obvious contractual agreements it makes it hard.

And no Paulo is not his first big fight, he recently annihilated Kalib fricken Starnes!
