Scott Coker said he's not entirely opposed to Jose Canseco:

"I can tell you this: If Cesar Gracie says to me, 'Jose's training with me, I'm going to get him ready, and I'm going to do it in four or five months,' and Cesar's telling me this? That will have a lot of weight on what we decide," Coker recently told MMAjunkie.com.

"Scott said if Jose wants to train, he'll put him in a Challenger series (event) if it's not the Herschel Walker fight," Gracie said. "There are a couple of other organizations that are interested in Jose that I'm meeting with next week." said Cesar Gracie.

I see this as just another step towards Japanese MMA

They already have a problem announcing fights in advance. They already have pissed off fighters who haven’t gotten fights. If they do this for publicity and don’t start being a serious organization, then fuck them. Coker is smart enough and has been doing this long enough to know that there are long term consequences for this. And when Josh Gross who is Strikeforce’s biggest cheerleader is pissed about this move, then you know that it’s a bad move.

They're already a "serious" organization

Not to imply that signing Canseco is a move in the right direction – and that’s IF it happens, which it hasn’t – but with Shields vs. Mayhem/Henderson, Fedor vs. Rogers, Carano/Connen vs. Cyborg, Mousasi vs. Sobral, etc. etc. etc. Strikeforce has put on serious fights.

They are a “real” MMA organization, they’re just considering signing someone that people don’t like.

Get rid of the ramp!

by ihateemo on Mar 16, 2010 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't hate Canseco

I think what he did blowing up steroids in baseball was great.

But when you sacrifice fights from fighters with legitimate records and followings and decide to push Jose Canseco or Hershel Walker into televised bouts, then yes, I do have a problem with that.

Everyone who signs a contract has X amount of fights that need to be fulfilled. Robbie Lawler is one who has been vocal about not getting these fights. If they refuse to put fighters with larger contracts on challengers shows (the more frequent shows) then they are sacrificing their integrity. And then yes, I do find a problem with that.

twitter.com/thisredengine

by Matthew Roth on Mar 16, 2010 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I was thinking more along the lines that people dislike Canseco being in MMA because of the cash grab/joke performance against Choi. His baseball past is irrelevant as far as I’m concerned.

It’s an academic point at this juncture anyway, since nothing is signed or agreed to. People are up in arms about something that has no date and may not even happen!

Again, reread my initial statement

I said that if they do go ahead and sign Jose, then they no longer wish to be taken seriously as a MMA organization. I’m not saying they aren’t one, I’m saying that at that point they’ve decided to be a joke.

Much in the same way that when Tito Ortiz kept talking about how he was gonna have his own organization through Strikeforce cagepotato put a ban on all Tito news, if Strikeforce goes ahead with this, there should be a ban.

Now if that happened

How quickly would we as fans comment that the UFC has decided to sacrifice their integrity and how quickly would there be a riot that they don’t want to be taken seriously?

Also, Shaq has been training in Shaqfu for years. He’s an expert.

How quickly would we as fans comment that the UFC has decided to sacrifice their integrity and how quickly would there be a riot that they don’t want to be taken seriously?

From the gist of the replies above you, I would say apparently not very quick.

Also, as I continue my role as devil’s advocate, the quotes above indicated:
- that he might be inclined to change his mind if Canseco trained with Gracie for 4 or five months and Gracie told him he thought he could compete
- that he didn’t say he would put him against Walker or on a Showtime or CBS card. Instead Gracie said it might be a Challenger’s card which is their developmental cards.
- He also has yet to say that he use him at all, only that he would have to weight what Gracie was telling him. Why should we get so worked up for something that has yet to transpire?

okay, now that I'm on a computer I'll respond

-As far as training with Gracie? Fine, do it, but also recognize that Cesar makes money on this too. It’s in his best interest for Jose to fight for Strikeforce.
-He said that if it wasn’t against Walker, then it would be on a Challenger’s show. But again, just using basic logic, what is the money matchup? Jose/Walker…while Coker can say that it may not be that fight, my money would be that he makes that fight.
-As you stated, if Gracie says jump, Coker’s gotta. 3 of his 5 champs are out of Camp Gracie.

I don’t bet or wager, but if I did, I’d say that the 3rd CBS card (if there is one) features Jose/Walker on the televised portion.

I don't know why I'm responding to this but I will

Coker was on record that he was not interested in Jose Canseco ever fighting in Strikeforce. He was adamant about it. While it is respectable that he’s at least training with a real camp, his intentions (Canseco’s) are pretty transparent. Without any insider information (I have none), I’d say odds are pretty good that he ends up fighting in Strikeforce.

The string of logic is that he’s fighting at Cesar Gracie’s camp. Cesar Gracie trains 3 of Strikeforce’s champs. Coker says that if Gracie approves he will consider this. Gracie makes money if Jose fights. Gracie will say he is ready. Coker recognizes that wasting him on a Challenger’s show is not good for business and books him against Walker on CBS.

Again, no insider info, just common sense.

twitter.com/thisredengine

by Matthew Roth on Mar 16, 2010 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions

And logic jumps. 1. He hasn’t signed, and 2. There is no reason to believe he wouldn’t be on a challengers card. But if you want to get pissed by all means go on ahead.

I really had higher hopes for Coker when it was announced Strikeforce was heading to Showtime (and later CBS). But he just seems in way over his head. From not announcing cards until two weeks before the show to allowing freakshows like Walker and possibly Canseco, times are looking grim.

the fact that herschel walker took a televised spot from 2 well established contenders like hieron vs riggs was bad enough. yes i know it got them some major publicity but how far is coker willing to go for that. say some c level actor that people know or reality show reject like spencer pratt that has had a ton of publicity wants to fight…should they be given a strikeforce slot as well bc a legit camp says he is training hard?? …since the publicity might help the company? soon enough you start hurting the legitimacy of the sport. give the spot to a legit amateur who looks promising instead…or someone that is going to build the promotion…not some washed up asshole (not to mention notorious juice head) like canseco.

I have no problem with this, if...

- Canseco actually trains
- He gets drug tested
- He isn’t the main fricking event
- He gets paid like someone with a 0-1 record should

I have zero interest in the fight, but that’s primarily because I don’t think that watching two guys in their 40s with less than 15 minutes experience between them will be entertaining. Coker can sign who he wants – I just hope for his own sake that he’s not throwing bags of money Canseco’s way the same way EliteXC did with Kimbo and Affliction did with, well, everyone.

Steriod users

Well, you have a valid point there. I believe JT will be tested. Just like the rest of the UFC fighters are tested. The fact that James Toney, Vitor and others tested positive is disconcerting. The only thing I’ll say in regard to Conseco, is, He brought down the sport of baseball. The public is still trying to make up its mind about MMA. To associate with Jose is counterproductive. I feel as though I’m giving Nate, Vitor, Baroni and Toney a pass. I’m Not. the big difference is they have something else to bring to the table. I.E. combat skills. Your point was well taken.

Maybe Scott's last name implies something about how he makes his decisions...

As much as I hate this, and as much as I want to call SF a joke, do remember, the largest MMA organization just signed a washed up, punch drunk, barely legible boxer.

Now see, if James Toney were fighting Jose Canseco...

I would actually root for him…
As of now I gotta cheer on Kimbo…

james toney

I have to respectfully disagree with you. James Toney is a professional fighter. and a heavyweight champion. Not a disgraced former steriod user/baseball player. I really think the difference is obvious.

by whardiek on Mar 16, 2010 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Didn’t say there was a comparison between the two, other than both are going to draw attention to this sport for the wrong reasons.

I disagree again.

sorry not trying to piss in you kool-aid bro. But james toney in the UFC is the first attempt to bait professional boxers into the cage. Jose Conseco is only a circus side show with absolutely no talent, no fighting skills and no credibility in general. At least, toney has credentials.

by whardiek on Mar 16, 2010 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Not pissing me off, I love a good debate. The thing with Toney is, if this were 10 even 15 years ago, he might still have something but he is old and fat. He talks a big game, but lets see him against a legit fighter. He is training with a boxing coach, not Greg Jackson. At least Canseco is training somewhere with respectable training partners. That being said, I dont want Canseco to touch this sport, he is a joke.

a good debate it is.

I read on one of the mma sites, that James toney is training with Juanitto Ibbara. sorry bout the spelling. I agree JT is past his prime, i’ll give you that. But, i contend, the reason JT is in the UFC is. 1) promotion. (DUH). 2) to bait upper echelon boxers into the UFC. and 3) JT is at least able to defend himself. I truly believe, Conseco could be killed.

by whardiek on Mar 16, 2010 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont know that he would be able to defend himself though....

Do we know what his takedown defense looks like? I am assuming, just assuming, that if he were to face a legit wrestler or anyone with ground skills, he would get tapped or pounded, very quickly. I agree with the promotion part, but do we really want that guy to be promoted? With the money that the upper tier of boxers are making, do you think they would really sign a low pay deal with the UFC?

I told you not to f*ck with me.

by Romoesbueno on Mar 16, 2010 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the major difference between promoting Canseco and Toney...

Is that Toney is actually a threat on his feet…
Canseco’s only threat is what he can do to an organization he belongs to.

Agreed.

Toney does have a proven record in combat sports, Canseco is just a tool that needs to go away.

by whardiek on Mar 16, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, and you're right...

There’s no way top boxers are going to cross over with the difference in pay-scale as it is…
Only if MMA actually does start swallowing up boxing, and if that were to happen, I imagine the pay scale would be more balanced…

Defend himself.

Well, you bring up a valid point. Could JT defend a takedown. Well, could Brock defend himself standing? Or Jacare? The Point is valid but, doesn’t apply. The sport grows only by it’s participants. If a fighter is strong standing up, or on the ground, or in the clinch. it’s all different fighting styles, unlike Jose conseco.

by whardiek on Mar 16, 2010 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Low pay.

Well, it depends on what boxer signs to fight. If Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pac, signed, they would be assured a portion of the pay per view buys. Just like Brock, Chuck, Randy, Tito, Ace and Forrest. So, I do see the incentive to crossover.

by whardiek on Mar 16, 2010 4:49 PM EDT up reply actions

toney while being way past his prime is still an accomplished fighter. unless canseco is taking a bat with him to the ring while juiced out of his mind….any decent fighter is going to seriiously hurt him.

James Toney (-500) vs. Jose Canseco w/ his baseball bat (+525)
