UFC on Versus Preview: Breaking Down Jon Jones vs Brandon Vera
Dave Meltzer talks about the bout:
The first of what will be a series of major light heavyweight matches in the division takes place Sunday night in Broomfield, Colo., with Jones facing Vera (11-4). What makes Jones perhaps at the head of the new class is that he's gotten to main event status so fast. He's only been training in the sport for two years and has only been training with a major camp, Greg Jackson's, for the past few months.Vera will be far more than a trial horse. He's more experienced as well as more versatile in the stand-up game. He has good wrestling, and would figure to have an edge if he can keep it standing. But Matt Hamill had a higher level of wrestling than Vera, and Jones shocked everyone with the way he threw Hamill around and dominated him before being disqualified for throwing an illegal elbow just as he was on the verge of winning their December match.
Jones tells Bleacher Report that he plans to attack Brandon Vera where he's strongest:
"I attacked Matt Hamill at his strength-wrestling," Jones said. "What I learned from the fight is to not doubt my own abilities. I learned to not give people credit for their strengths."
"Brandon Vera is supposed to be such a great Muay-Thai striker? I'm going to let him prove that he is."
For his part Vera tells Ray Hui he's looking to do some ground fighting against Jones:
"MMA is a growing process for me too," Vera said. "For some reason, I don't know when or where it started. I started worrying about defending the takedown so much. I don't know. I started becoming this standup fighter and everybody wanted to see me bang, so I just stopped the takedowns, and I just started defending the takedown all the time. "
But Vera has since realized that he shouldn't be worried about being taken to the ground. After all, he's a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Lloyd Irvin.
"I was doing jiu-jitsu before I started fighting," Vera said. "I love being on the ground. I'm better on my back than I am on top of you. I've been submitting people all day now that I've gone back to my jiu-jitsu roots. So if somebody takes me to the ground, you could end up seeing someone submitted. I'm back on my jiu-jitsu game."
But he also told the Las Vegas Review Journal that he isn't worried about those watching the fight:
"I (have) stopped believing in the hype, I (have) stopped worrying about what people think, and I'm just kind of going back in just trying to hurt people again like I used to," he said. "I got away from that somehow. I don't know what happened, (but) I'm over it. I just want to go ahead and go back in there and start doing things like I used to."
Personally, I think this fight is just great match-making. Jon Jones is the fast-rising star. Brandon Vera is the fading star. But if Jones takes him lightly or Vera regains his old form, this could be a very different fight than many are expecting.
Vera has a strong Greco-Roman background, better jiu jitsu credentials than Jones and a much more polished Muay Thai attack than Jones.
Jones will have a reach advantage, presumably better wrestling, an arsenal of throws and trips modified from judo, but he's never shown KO power standing and is prone to taking wild risks and being somewhat sloppy.
This might just be the fight where Jon Jones learns some valuable lessons.

No need to predict outcome
Watch again, a very game Matt Hamil get the ability to add, multiply and tie shoes get beaten out of him…
Vera is too worried about regaining his "old" self
He’s been talking like this since his drop to LHW, it’s obviously still in his head. One big performance may change that, but I don’t see it against Jonny Bones.

Jones v. Bader is not happening. They want to build Bader up and Jones would wipe the floor with him.

Thiago Silva would be my choice. He could be to Greg Jackson’s what Paulo Thiago is to AKA.

I saw a vid of Jones knocking a guy out within seconds of the 1st round. I know that wasn’t the UFC and I know that I don’t know the guys’ name, but it does show that he has some kind of knockout power.
Okay I’m babbling, he really hasn’t shown the knockout power, but he sort of has shown it somewhat.
I love Jones
but I see this playing out the same way that Anthony Johnson vs Josh Koscheck ended up, with the more experienced fighter prevailing over the guy on the hype-train(not undeserved, of course). So in case that wasn’t clear enough, Vera by TKO, round 2.
Soooooooo
You’re saying Vera is going to fake getting knee’d in the eye?

@deowade
No no no
He is saying that Jones is going to miss weight and Vera is coming in with a bleached out fraggle fro.

If this means that they'll bring back Logan and Natasha
I’m on board.

Rumble's hype train is built of being huge and powerful...
Not of a diverse skill set. Jones has shown a lot more than Rumble at this point.
Both are solid prospects, but Jones seems further along in my opinion.
Yes...
he has shown a vast array of illegal elbows.
I agree with you though, out of the two Jones definitly has a more solid game and isn’t just a case of wondering how he cuts so much weight.

Jon Jones taking this fight lightly is about the last thing i’m worried about.

Vera will be far more than a trial horse. He’s more experienced as well as more versatile in the stand-up game
More experience, I’ll give you, but more versatile? Has Meltzer even seen a Jones fight before?
From now on whatever event I am planning will be know as the ‘Bas Rutten Invitational ____’
he said
“more versatile in the standup game” . which given vera’s execellent hands and body punches one could say he’s versatile.. but then throw in his leg kicks, knees and body kicks and vera truly does have a versatile game.
oh wait no he also can freely flow between standard and southpaw stances landing counters with both.
ok he hasnt knocked anyone out cold in his last few fights.. but the guy is a striking machine (look at his stats) and only four other guys out there i would say have undeniably better technical striking right now.. anderson, machida, shogun, ? .. and wasnt it just three fights ago that machida was being criticized for not finishiing fights?
I would simply say Jones is unpredictable whereas Vera is much more technically dynamic in his striking. Punches, kicks, body kicks, leg kicks, clinch work, knees, etc.

Jones’ striking beats Vera’s ground game any day of the week

Vera has pretty good grappling credentials, definitely better than Jones striking.
by dancingChicken on Mar 16, 2010 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Neither has virtually any credentials in those areas, just skills displayed in MMA.
Jones is somewhat of an anomaly since he has limited credentials outside MMA because he took up MMA so young (at the expense of what he could’ve accomplished as an NCAA wrestler, for example).
Nice term drop.
JMO, but it’s interesting to watch guys like Jones (and GSP before him) who entered MMA so young, but showed so much potential early on. Unlike many others, they came to MMA without a singular skill where they were an expert (although Jones was closer with at least his JUCO wrestling credentials). But somehow, you could watch them and just get a sense that they could be future champs.
The thing about these guys that’s really exciting is that since they aren’t expert at any one thing, they tend to improve by huge leaps from fight to fight, and do so often in multiple areas. You don’t really know what to expect, you just know you’ll be impressed after you see the latest iteration.
Yea I think that Vera is trying to put it in Bones head that hell sub him if it hits the floor. I think he’s playing mind games with his goal being to get Jones to stand and not go for the takedowns or trips. I don’t think it will work but it would be a hell of a lot easier to out strike jones if he didn’t have to worry about the throws. I am SO ready for this fight!
by xbuckeyex05 on Mar 16, 2010 3:59 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I think Jones will go for the takedowns and trips even if he wants to keep the fight standing.
Besides the fact that they are flashy, the score points and I imaginge they can be a little demoralizing.
If had to throw some cash on this I would take Vera since he’s something like +200. This fight should go to a decision. Nobody has really hurt Vera on the feet. I know he had some rough moments against Jardine but nothing close to a stoppage. I think his Jit is too good for Jones to get a sub. So, I think it’s slightly more likely that Jones makes a mistake and gets stopped raher than Vera getting stopped. I think a close decisin is in the works so why not go with the fighter who will pay 2 to 1.

wait who made vera ever look that bad?? only one i can think of is werdum the guy who wins world titles open weight and heavyweight.
many agree couture vera was a stall and brawl.. more stall. i would say vera isnt so bad.. but i guess wait till fight night.
You’re absolutely right, I really don’t recall anybody really hurting Vera badly or making him look bad with the exception of Werdum.

Depends on the definition of bad. Many of Vera’s fights have been rather uneventful, and a couple had him teetering on the edge of winning/losing a decision, and he came out on the wrong end of those. If Jones really is a guy as talented as he seems, and as his trainers are saying, he could be the one to make Vera look bad enough for a clear dominating decision, or maybe even a stoppage. The latter would be a huge statement.
I think Vera makes himself look bad every once in a while by fighting down to the level of his opponent.
fight metric...
has vera winning against couture and jardine.

. . . this fight is going to nasty and I don’t know who will win this fight. That makes it more exciting.

that was bs...
Jones is playing mind games with vera and vera is playing mind games with jones (‘i don’t mind being taken down’)

Poke fun all you want and call me a fanboy or a nuthugger but I am predicting that Jones rolls over Vera in impressive fashion. We could debate styles, matchups, and statistics until we’re blue in the face but I still think Jones is going to beat Vera up. I just don’t see this as the fight that Vera is going to suddenly grasp that killer instinct to use his skills to what he’s capable of. You can call Jone’s style unorthodox and at times high risk but I just think he has a more creative fighting mind.
I want to think that, but my brain won't let me.
Vera has skills in all areas and a reach to almost match Jones. It should be competetive. If it isn’t and Jones wins in one sided fashion, they hype train will fill up pretty quick.
I’m right with you. On paper, Vera has the skills to handle Bones, but with the advantage in speed and reach he had on Jardine and Randy, he still fought tentatively. Brandon’s always just about to show the world “the real Brandon Vera”, but I can’t give him the benefit of the doubt anymore. If Vera really cuts loose early with leg kicks, maybe he’ll be able to put Jon off his game, but I think it’s more likely that Jon will catch some of these kicks and toss Vera all over the place. I don’t expect Vera to get finished, but I do think he’s gonna get comprehensively owned. No hate for Vera or anything, I’ve just heard him tell this tale too many times…

Fair enough. He does say he has found himself and fixed his problems before every fight.
To a degree, most fighters say that though. “You are going to see the best _ ever in this fight.” With Vera though, people remember him being explosive and he just doesn’t fight that way anymore. He used to be a very exciting fighter. People are dissapointed those days are gone.
It’s true that everyone says the same thing coming back after losses, or even just disappointing performances. And while I’m pretty Jon Jones crazy at this point, I’d love it if Vera really does look great. There’s still a lot of unknowns about Jon at this point, and I hope Brandon can really push him at least. A resurgent Brandon Vera would be great for the division. He’s just running short of time to make his mark, while Jon Jones has all the time in the world.

This is defintely a great bit of matchmaking
This is a closely matched fight that I could see going either way. If Jones rolls over Vera like many here are predicting that will prove he belongs in the very top of the division. I think Vera is being underrated here, but he has failed to live up to expectations in the past. He defended very well against one of the best Greco wrestlers in Couture, but Jones is more explosive than Randy. The point I think many are missing is that I really do think Vera has the better striking game and better ground game, his problems seem to be mental. If he fights smart (not letting himself be tied up constantly in the clinch like his last fight) we might just see the Jones hype wagon hit a major bump Sunday.
I think that this fight is going to be a brutal, one sided merking of Fishbob.
Keep firing Assholes!
Blackout is always right
Why does everyone mention Vera is brown belt under Lloyd Irvin?
It’s not like he is a wizard on the ground under the tutelage of Cesar Gracie or the Yamasaki’s. He is a brown belt under Lloyd who lied and said it took him 3 and a half years to earn his black belt while it actually took about 7. Ugh, just me ranting, but the guy is not as great as ppl make him out to be
oh shit.. someone from yamasaki huh?
the yamasaki’s have a strong jitz team.. but lloyd has fighters in top organizations.. whether it took him 7 years or 3.. he has a black belt.. is a good trainer, and knows how to sell himself.
and im not hating.. i have friends that are bb under yamasaki. and wrestled a great teacher at lloyd irvin.. within the last week. lloyd irvin has real black belts. straight up.
You have some good points...
I mean I don’t want to bash his guys. I actually compete in jitz tournaments on a regular basis with some of his guys and they are good guys don’t get me wrong. I just have a problem with Lloyd himself. You hear so many horror stories out of there and how you basically have to sell your soul to him. Just does’t sound healthy overall. And yes lol Mario is a 3rd degree bb in BJJ and his brother Fernando who I train with is a 4th, they know what theyre doing.

Yamasaki. I looked it up. Didn’t know that Mario Yamasaki is a 3rd degree BJJ blackbelt.

Man we need Logan back
In every fighter pick she’s sheepishly biting her lips in the background. She’s eyes up the fighters every time.
The man known simply as "Christmas Cheesesteak"
Anton, in your world does anyone have a higher level of anything than Vera? I mean, other than winning of course.
I know you're kidding,
but can you actually say Hamill has better wrestling credentials than Vera? Forget about the grappling where he’s lightyears better than Matt, but even their wrestling pedigree isn’t even comparable…
even Vera haters would admit to that.
by Anton Tabuena on Mar 17, 2010 4:47 AM EDT up reply actions
Why would they admit that? Hamill is a more accomplishd wrestler, and has shown better wrestling in MMA. Vera went to Old Dominion to wrestle, and washed out without doing anything. He then spent some undetermined amount of time at the OTC training, and apparently his pedigree consists of finishing 3rd in a 4 man greco tourney.
It's a mental battle
I think if Vera comes in and doesn’t psyche himself out then he has a good chance oif winning. It seems his problem is he over thinks fights and tries to counter his opponent’s strengths instead of use his own.
Look at the fight with Couture, he was so busy tring to counter the dirty boxing and the greco-roman clinch that he didn’t fight his own fight and lost sight of the win.
