Kimbo by gogoplata

As much crap as this guy is talking I would like to see him get his azz handed to him first match. Put him in there against someone that will toss him around for a couple rounds and ground and pound him hard to teach some respect.

I think I’d rather see him against someone with some brutal leg kicks, see him quit on the stool between rounds.

Kimbo would have no chance against this guy, am i right?
Unless he has learned some half-ass takedowns at least?
This is a horrible match-up for someone who wants Toney’s ass handed to him…

i agree it is a bad matchup for kimbo,

but it is mma and anything could happen, i didnt give kimbo a chance against houston alexander, Also i wam wondering if the ufc is going to build toney or set him up to get destroyed?

I bet even if they give him a chance to get a little more prepared it won’t make a bit of difference. His response on Inside MMA last week when Bas asked him about preparation wasn’t very convincing. It may just be me, but I figure no matter who he fights, he’s gonna end up swinging for the fences, and either decapitate them, or swiftly get put on his ass. And I don’t see him getting back up either from that position. I’ve seen old fat people fall before.

Well, ok, hopefully he would change his gameplan… He’s a whiz on the ground right? That was the worst flying knee I’ve ever seen BTW. Someone tell him he’s a foot taller than Buentello! He could do a crouching knee and still smash his jaw.

I thought about that…that would be hilarious if he did it again. Then Kimbo would be the boxer-killer. Which means Seth Petruzelli, the Kimbo-killer, should be able to take out that Klitschko guy or whoever he is, right?

I don’tthink its all that bad for Kimbo. He wasn’t that arrogent against Mercer. He closed distance and went for a takedown. Kimbo doesn’t have an issue trying for GnP. Only time Kimbo really started punching against Mercer is when Mercer covered up. Kimbo showed that he has some general techniques now for takedowns when fighting Houston Alexander. He’s atleast a year ahead of Toney when it comes to takedowns and takedown defense. Is it a high risk fight for Kimbo? Yeah you bet but everyone expects Kimbo to just simply box with him and I don’t agree at all.

by YoungGun on Mar 16, 2010 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I've always wanted to see a Street fighter vs a Boxer

—aside from playing Tekken 4, Kimbo, on paper, has a punchers chance of beating James Toney. As a fan, I am willing to give James the benefit of the doubt due to his skills and talent that vastly outweight anything Kimbo has done since given the title suffix of ‘Slice’.

However, I doubt Toney is in shape to bang with Kimbo, take the rushing, constant grabbing and being thrown to the cage floor. It will be a one-sided affair.

Advantage: Kimbo

by Rahson on Mar 16, 2010 12:28 PM EDT reply actions

Toney is selling himself short by continually asking for Kimbo. It’s painfully obvious that Kimbo’s never had a ground game and his standup is inadequate, at best, against guys that have had any type of training.

I wouldn’t mind seeing him against Bader, or even Phil Davis. Either of those guys would force him to put up or shut up.

by Norm78 on Mar 16, 2010 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DahOLe5z3Ek.

And Kimbo must have learned a thing or two since his first fight.

by cmsove on Mar 16, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

what’s your rationale behind “it’s obvious” he has no ground game? maybe kimbo has no ground game compared to a machida or a shogun or some of his other LHW peers but against James Toney he should have a pretty good shot at outgrappling him. He’s been training long enough now that he really should have plenty of stuff to use on the ground. He pulled off sweeps from guard vs thompson, he took down Alexander and took his back. does he have the best grappling in his division, or anywhere close? no. but compared to toney… probably

by phantasma475 on Mar 16, 2010 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I really don’t want to see a fight where Kimbo has the better ground game. That fight would probably be a sloppy boring mess (a guy with no game trying to defend the subs of a guy with almost no game).

Not really

—because when the Toney-Kimbo fight happens. If it’s on PPV, the majority of the people who’re going to buy or watch the fight are going to see Kimbo. Toney is obviously in the UFC for monetary gain. Calling out Kimbo will create a huge buzz.

Pitting these two behemoths together in a cage is great. Not for the sport of MMA, but just for the sport of seeing the “never-was” against the “has-been”.

Toney vs anyone that’s not a big name will be shot dead quick and pushed to the side.

No way. Toney knows Kimbo is a watered down version of himself. Kimbo is a street fighter who is a big name that will try and trade punches and sadly personifies MMA for a lot of people.

Toney knows that he can come in with little risk of his deficiencies getting exposed and crush a huge name with his superior boxing.

Its a perfect fight for him.

I disagree that Kimbo is simply going to try to trade punches with him. He didn’t do that against the last former boxer he faced. Only really aggressive punches he threw against Mercer was after Ray completely covered up. If this happens I think Kimbo is just going to end up prolonging his hype even longer if he gets Toney on the ground and GnPs him. Kimbo likes to bang but he also doesn’t have a problem throwing the leather when that person is on the ground.

by YoungGun on Mar 16, 2010 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Just to be clear I am not a Kimbo fan. I never had any delusions that this guy would dominate any relevant MMA fighter. I just think that he will be slightly more skilled then Toney in the ground game and will be perfectly fine to take the fight to the ground.

by YoungGun on Mar 16, 2010 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

toney

I think the UFC is gonna give toney an easier fight in his first fight. try to exploit his pay per view draw, and then throw him in with the wolves. I d like to see james toney vs. kimbo. after kimbo submits his ass, they throw toney in with couture or forrest. That is when james toney gets his lights out. The only thing james toney is good at is talking shit. Toney is hyping up the Boxing vs. MMA arguement. James Toney is the boxing version of Brock Lesnar. Lesnar came into the UFC talking shit, and produced the best selling UFC pay per view of all time. Look for James Toney to emulate Lesnar. The only difference is Toney will get hurt by a real MMA fighter.

This is what throws MMA in that spectacle category i.e. sideshow. If I was Dana, I wouldn’t of even created the though of a possible James Toney signing. Leave that to Strikeforce.

ESPN, PTI, Around The Horn won’t comment on a GSP or BJ Penn victory, but I gurantee if Kimbo—excuse me, when Kimbo knocks out James Toney. It will be all over ESPN’s First Take, PTI and Around The Horn.
