One-dimensional Pacman bores Mayweather Jr:

"I think Pacquiao got exposed in that fight for being one-dimensional. You can have all the offense ability in the world, but with no defense, you’re not going to last long against a good counter puncher such as myself," Floyd Mayweather Jr. said.

"When was the last time you’ve seen my face all messed up like that?."

"At least when you watch Floyd Mayweather Jr., you know you’ll be seeing non-stop action for 30 minutes straight," said Mayweather.

... "The only reason why he's popular is because he's an ethnic minority and from the Philippines, so it's something special. If he was from Africa he would be just another boxer."

well amongst boxers I’d say PAC is a minority and Floyd is not, there are a ton of black boxers. I can’t remember the last top level Asian boxer. trying to think of a parallel in mma, but mma seems to be pretty diverse, whereas boxing primarily is black and Latino with a few others sprinkled in.

Anyone who watched boxing on HBO in the 2000s knows who Kostya Tzsu is. He unified the Jr Welterweight belts, and was a damn fine boxer.

Another Asian of note is Vic Darchinyan. Unless Armenians don’t count as Asians either. If you watched boxing on Showtime at all during the 2000s, you know who Darchinyan is.

Is it “hardcore” to watch boxing on the two major TV outlets you can get quality boxing on, and learn the names of the fighters that those TV channels promote? I’ll also ad that if you are a boxer and you are repeatedly promoted by either HBO or Showtime, you have officially crossed the bridge from no-name to basically famous (as far as boxers go).

Ricky Hatton came closer to beating Manny Pacquiao than Marquez did to beating Floyd.

“The only reason why he’s popular is because he’s an ethnic minority…..”

Shorty after saying this an aide whispered something in Floyd’s ear and he responded with an anquished shout “You mean I’m not white!!!!!!?”

by Rich Wyatt on Mar 16, 2010 9:25 AM EDT reply actions

In the mind of Floyd Mayweather, he is neither black nor white nor Asian nor Inuit nor anything else. He’s a Floyd, an ethnic group all to himself.

by Monday Morning Martial Artist on Mar 16, 2010 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

That would make him a minority.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

by Llewdor on Mar 16, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

So are white people an ethnic minority yet, or do we have to challenge Floyd to a fight first?

by DirtyML on Mar 16, 2010 9:29 AM EDT reply actions

Pretty sure I read somewhere that minorities will be the majority in the very near future…

by PM23 on Mar 16, 2010 9:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but I am pretty sure white people will still be the largest group in the US. Grouping all the current minorities together doesn’t really make them one group. I don’t really care, I just think that cliche is a little inaccurate.

by Dropkick434 on Mar 16, 2010 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions

I actually didn’t realize that was a cliche statement. The article I read actually said that more minority babies will be born in America this year than white babies.

by PM23 on Mar 18, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

In boxing, just like the NBA and NFL, African Americans are the ethnic majority. If Manny was a white American he would be just as or even more popular.

by YoungGun on Mar 16, 2010 9:35 AM EDT up reply actions

So if he thinks that Manny is one-dimenional and that he is so much better than him, then why not go for the easy payday then? Its crazy. “I can beat you and make more money than any other boxer ever but I just dont want to cause it would be too easy”.

by Joselana on Mar 16, 2010 9:41 AM EDT reply actions

Pac has more heart than Floyd. He’s a better story. He’s ridiculously skilled and has much more class.

With that being said, Floyd beats him 9/10 IMO..

Hope we get to see the fight, though I doubt we will.

by LtotheK on Mar 16, 2010 9:46 AM EDT reply actions

Floyd is just jealous because the fact of the matter is that Pacquiao’s victories over Cotto and Clottey are more impressive than anything Floyd has done in the 147 pound weight class. Now granted, that could change of Floyd beats Mosley, but until then….

by joshyboy708 on Mar 16, 2010 9:59 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, i chuckled a little at that. Pacman attacks relentlessly and Floyd dodges and throws enough punches to win.

by Dropkick434 on Mar 16, 2010 10:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Given Floyd’s history of coming in over the limit and simply paying his way out, I don’t think the 10 mill per pound was exactly ridiculous. It’s a lot of money, but neither fighter would’ve had to pay a dime as long as they came in under the specified weight limit.

by Monday Morning Martial Artist on Mar 16, 2010 10:27 AM EDT up reply actions

And given that blood testing is pretty weak, I don’t think that 14 day out testing is ridiculous. fact is, if you’re a fan of Manny you’ll find a reason to claim that PBF is ducking him. Same if you are a PBF fan, you’ll find reason to say Manny is ducking PBF.

At this point they are both businesses. If Manny doesn’t have that P4P best fighter tag, his money line is decreased. If PBF doesn’t have that air of dominance, then he’s just another boxer. Too much to lose.

Floyd's history?

He came in two pounds over weight, fighting the #2 P4P Boxer in the World—who called him out after a two year lay-off. He’s lucky he was able to come in at 146, however, he paid the fine of $300k a pound, so it’s not something to make a giant fuss about. Floyd has always made weight up until that point. He’s always chased the big names.

And yes, $10 Mil a pound is extremely out of the ordinary. You tell me one other fight that demanded that sum of money per pound.

Immediately after the cancellation of Mosley-Berto, Mosley and Mayweather — the former welterweight champ and pound-for-pound king until giving up the mantle during a brief retirement — began negotiating.

“The negotiations were very cordial and went very smoothly,” Ellerbe said.

Mosley has agreed to undergo random blood and urine testing, as has Mayweather, Ellerbe said.

Mosley wanted no part of Floyd in '99 or '06

Mosley was at 135 when Floyd was at 130. Mosley knew Floyd was a dangerous Boxer at 130, however there was no money in a Floyd fight at the time, so he moved on up to 147 and fought Oscar De La Hoya—who was considered the #1 P4P Boxer in the world. I believe Mosley was #2 according to Ring rankings.

However, you can bet your ass that Floyd called out all the big names. Tsyzu, Lazcano, Freitas, Castillo, Mosley, De La Hoya. Those were the big names in ’99.

You could have easily put Floyd in the same category most put Paul Williams now, back in ’99. High risk; low reward.

I actually like both fighters a lot

Mayweather is right in one respect, nobody will confuse Pacman with a defensive fighter. Fighters like Pacman use their offense for defense actually. By outpunching your opponent at a high rate, with fast handspeed you can keep them on the defense the whole fight.

Clottey had plenty of good punches, uppercuts, straights, etc but not enough of them. Clottey’s style falls right into Manny’s hands. He was essentially a 12 round punching bag. Clottey lacks the footwork to ever compete at the highest level of boxing. Oh and he doesn’t have the heart to compete at the highest level of boxing too.

by CROOKS on Mar 16, 2010 1:44 PM EDT reply actions

They both want the fight.

—And Floyd is completely right about the racial differences. Their have been plenty of great white, black, mexican, italian Boxers. Their hasn’t been really any exceptional Filipino boxers comparable to Pacquiao unless you want to argue that Gerry Penalosa, Gabriel Elorde or Pancho Villa were or just as exceptional…

Pacquiao is the exception. He isn’t the traditional race for a Boxer, he is uncommon. Therefore is highly respected for being the first Filipino; first Boxer to win seven divisional title, four of them lineal of the original eight weight divisions. By default, he is the minority.

All-in-all, Mayweather is correct. Don’t look at it as a racial jab. He knows his Boxing.
