UFC 111 Preview: Frank Mir on Pursuing His Dream

As a kid, Frank Mir was a Dungeons and Dragons nerd and fantasy book freak with no friends. Then he got big, and people started showing him respect. But even to this day, Mir still has his share of haters.

Frank Mir has his share of haters…really? i wonder why

"Frank Mir had a horseshoe up his ass. I told him a year ago. I pulled it out of him and I beat him over the head with it." Brock Lesnar

50 years from now, no one will know you, not even your own grand children. … well, except for this one random guy named micahw in louisville, ky, i’ll know who you were, find solace in that :D

I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08

frank mir was a ufc champ when tim

sylvia, the head hunter, & the pitbull were around. we got a whole new heavyweight division with new young fighters who are hungry to get a KO over a bjj – jj guy.nog didn’t have a chance to get cain down, what make mir think he is going to take carwin down?

by mikeybear32 on Mar 16, 2010 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

mikey

this is almost the same fight as mir-kongo.. He didnt have to take him down he put him down… I am in now way a mir fan but i have to give him props.. When i watched the vera fight an he was dismantled rather quickly i thought mirs days as an elite were far behind him.. He proved almost everybody wrong an has progessed and evolved his game to a level i thought he would never reach.. With that said, im not betting against him anymore ive lost to much money lol

have u ever even been in a fight??

Mir is actually still pretty young, so it is not like he is incapable of improvement. I think that he is actually an under-rated fighter because he talks a lot, and MMA fans want to see him get beat, and of course he lost to Lesnar in devastating fashion. I feel that people overlook his abilities because they are overshadowed by his arrogance and big mouth. Mir honestly comes off as hungry as a Velasquez, or JDS, or a DUFFEE. He was at his most fit against Lesnar at UFC 100, and now he is huge, which tells me that he seriously wants to get back to the top.

Everything he said, pretty much true.

Nobody will be remembered in all likelihood over a long enough period of time everyone becomes anonymous. I don’t know anyone from 4000BC, Sumerians that I’m sure were baking the first clay dishes, geniuses in their own right. Never gonna know them.

Frank does have the balls to go out their and take or give a beating and he will be remembered by people over a period of time, so props to him for giving it his all in his area of expertise, other than that he is kind of a dick, but he has been through a lot.

There’s these crazy things called history books..

by LtotheK on Mar 16, 2010 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

History books don’t cover the average person, the only people from Sumer that were recounted are kings or people who were close to them.

I know it’s a crazy thing to think of a history book, but think to the time where the average person was not considered worthwhile enough to have been written about at all.

by DirtyML on Mar 16, 2010 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Because those history books would suck

In this random period in history, the average person was a struggling peasant.

In this other period, the average person was a struggling peasant.

In yet another period, the average person was a struggling peasant.

Average people are dull.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

Whenever people talk about the forgotten people of history, I always think of “Ozymandias.”

And on the pedestal these words appear:
`My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings:
Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair!’
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,
The lone and level sands stretch far away".

Frank Mir is the man.....

Sorry….. its true. Yeah sometimes he says some dumb shit….. but lets be honest…. is there another fighter that has evolved with the times like he has in the heavyweight division? Gonzaga maybe…. but his chin is his worst enemy.

Well Rayce...

I was hoping someone would fire back with “That’s why no one will remember your name” capitolizing on the similiarities between that and the quote about “not even your grandkids will remember you” that mir just made. Anyways either I failed or you guys let me down………………..

Struck a nerve

There’s a great scene in ‘Up in the Air’ where George Clooney is firing J.K. Simmons after he worked for this company for 10 years or something like that. Clooney asks, "do you know why kids love athletes?‘, to which Simmons replies, ’Because they screw lingerie models?’ Clooney responds, "No, that’s why WE love athletes. Kids love them because they follow their dreams.’

If you think about it, all this incessant name calling and berating we read in the intertubes amounts to nothing more than sour grapes uttered by malcontents (myself included) who didn’t have the jacobs to go out there and pursue their dreams, while guys like Mir and Tito and Bisping — as irritating as they can be — did.

UBERMIR

by Polyhedron on Mar 16, 2010 9:12 AM EDT reply actions

If Mir plays as a Controller, he probably wins this fight. If he tries to be a Striker, he’s gonna end up coup-de-grace’d, because you don’t Strike against a solo Brute.

Wow, I totally missed that the first time through. Nicely done.

Dangit Mir! Stop giving Dungeons & Dragons a bad name.

by jebmak on Mar 16, 2010 1:12 PM EDT reply actions

sigh

Fans may be lazy and insignificant in the face of time, but apparently their opinions do get noticed by historical figures like Frank Mir.

Personally, I liked him as a fighter, commentator. GREAT asset to the sport. But the antics leading up to the second Lesnar fight made it VERY hard, if not impossible for me to root for him.

As I slouch back on my couch, and type this on my laptop (practically obscured by my large gut), I’ll say that when Mir beat Kongo, and didn’t walk around the cage like a complete douche, I was impressed.

I’ll be right here, remote in hand, eagerly paying the 50 bucks for the privilege of watching his next fight, as the verbal diarrhea spouting from his mouth continues to cover me head to toe.

After all, only through Mir’s brave endeavors we can vicariously live our pointless existences.

Get out of your head Frank.

Mir is great, just by putting up one of his interviews you can guarantee that there will be a reaction to it on here classic stuff really.
