Jim Rome Burns on Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey

"After the fight though, Pacquiao called out Floyd Mayweather saying, he does want to fight him and that his style is not hard to figure out."-- Click here for the video.
"Good, because at this point there is not a single fight out there that anybody really cares about or wants to see and not hammering out a deal would be the biggest embarrassment ever."
"It would be unforgivable, inexcusable and make it nearly impossible to argue that MMA hasn't blown right by boxing and that's coming from a guy who likes boxing better."

The man has a point...
boxing can’t blue ball its fans forever and expect them to hang around on flirting alone.

rome gives mma its due
unlike just about everyone else on espn rome understands and acknowledges the sport
I think this is more of him jumping ship
MMA will make its way into ESPN and other major sport news outlets, so instead of fighting the inevitable he’s welcoming that thought.
Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension
I think Rome understands that it isn’t an either/or proposition and you can like one sport without disliking the other.

Yeah, Rome as far as I know has always had a fairly even view of MMA, as far as mainstream media goes. This is not him jumping ship as it is more about him calling for what should be an obvious fight.
I don't want to lick any butt. - GSP
my bad then, I shouldn’t talk about people I know nothing about :p

Rome welcoming the tide of MMA and successfully incorporating coverage into his show will equal big$$ for his program. I think MMA fans are always looking for another good show on TV that has MMA talk

Rome has always been good to MMA and specifically UFC. He’s had Dana White on his radio show many times and has had on many fighters including Lesnar, Couture, and Dan Henderson. Rome has even talked about how B.J. Penn sends him cases of Mickey’s after his fights.
Randy Hahn: "I’ve been referred to as a playa…"
rome
is the biggest ‘reporter’ on tv that treats mma like a sport.

I love boxing, but after this fight happens (if it happens) Pacquiao will retire and MMA will officially be king of all combat sports.
Boxing Fans
Will not simply go “Well that fight was good, let’s go see that MMA thing now then?”
No, boxing still has an immense, global following, and while I love MMA and just have a casual interest in boxing at best it’s quite obvious that boxing is still alive and well. The Manny Pacquiao/Floyd Mayweather fight will pull a pay per view number equivalent to two, maybe even three of the UFC’s best pay per view turnouts, it’s scary how big this fight will be when/if it happens.

The problem is what will come after this fight. Boxing does have some real problems and Rome is a fan of the sport, I’m sure he’s hoping this will be a wake up call for them. Heck one of boxing’s biggest current problems is that they just don’t plan ahead for the long term, it’s far from dead but it does need to work on it’s issues because they are running out of super stars and mega fights.
So what do you guys think happens after Pacquaio/Mayweather? If it actually does happen.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.
I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
A rematch??

It's going to be like BROCKLES vs Mir. It's going to happen once every other year for eternity.
"I will do nothing lightly. When I walk, I will walk heavily. When I fight, I will fight with conviction. When I speak, I will speak strongly. When I love, I will love with everything"
Once the whole saga is played out I mean.

This is Rome being a little aggressive with comments just to get some play in the blogs and shit.
Just like he’s doing.
This crap will be all over the boxing and MMA sites. Continuing to fuel this fire of boxing vs MMA.
It’s like Nascar vs Soccer or Baseball vs Diving. It’s different sports for different fans. The HBO exec that says 5% cross over was probably really close.
Rome doesnt say shit to get noticed
He’s always talked like this, if you haven’t been listening to his show for a long time (before there were sports blogs). He also has been covering MMA longer than most mainstream sports guys. I remember him interviewing Jens Pulver & Rich Franklin on a long time back.
Boxing won't be dying any time soon...
But it doesn’t mean it won’t be on a ventilator for another 20 years in a coma. The sport’s been around for like a century; MMA won’t be pushing it off the main stage any time soon. The way I see it, the real problem that boxing has with MMA is that MMA is pulling so many great fighters away from them before they get in the circuit. Some guys like Jones, Dos Santos, Pulver, and on and on would have been perfect boxing candidates, had they not found a fighting sport that is WAY MORE FUN. You get to jump all over the place, and rassle, and punch with tiny gloves..the refs don’t go charging in when you so much as lean on each other…It’s friggin awesome. Period.
MMA’s only been around for a a decade in any organized, non-bloodsport fashion. Give it a couple more decades and there may be a new fighting king. Heck, who knows, maybe that Extreme Arm Wrestling may catch on.
MMA is already the new fight king...
its just going to take a decade or two for boxing to wake up to the fact. Once the older generation of boxing fans die off, it will become apparent exactly how done it is as a sport…kind of like baseball.
Baseball?
It is bigger than the NBA and NHL, draws HUGE amounts of fans and its a dead sport?
Dying...for sure.
It will be long and slow, but it is killing itself. Not inevitable, but that sport is killing itself between steroids, lack of parity, low attendance, etc…it will be declining in popularity over the next couple of decades toward an uncertain future.
Any sport that conciders John Kruk an athlete...
is not in a healthy state. Baseball is a sport that’s image fits the ‘good ole days’ of the 50’s. Kids today don’t want to sit in the bleacher seats for hours on end and have peanuts and crackerjack, they want to go snowboarding and watch other action sports.
I think that could be MMA’s big move, to position itself properly in that action sports genre and make the most of that market. I could totally see some kind of cross promotion with the Maloof Cup.

Since 2007 9 clubs have set new attendance records. Some of those teams clip 4 million tickets sold.
