MMA Nation Overtime: HBO, Boxing and Different Combat Sport Audiences

I use the statement from HBO with respect to the 5 percent crossover of MMA and boxing audiences to continue discussion of last week's point.

just curious about why all the fan shows aren’t on iTunes anymore, is it CBS not wanting to foot the bill?

No, they'll put them back on

I think there’s some internal restructuring. And operations at the station never move that quickly, but they’ll be back on iTunes soon enough.

Yeah, it’s pretty righteous. I am jealous.

It hurts me to say it

But Luke is spot on regarding ESPN. The only issue I have is that it seems that when ESPN covers MMA, it banks on Kimbo and Herschel Walker. I have respect for both those guys, but I have to agree with Dana on this. No one gives love to GSP, Penn or A.Silva, but they are fixated on the freak show mentality. That is the one thing that irks me.

While I agree with you Luke, I have to say ESPN has a tendency to drive stuff into the ground. And you have to wonder if ESPN drove MMA into the ground with it’s coverage, would that make people less interested in watching a card?

Hmmm

What do you mean, exactly? Like, too many highlights after a live event? I guess I’m unclear with what you mean by too much coverage.

Never mind that comment Luke. I’m thinking about ESPN airing MMA cards than actual coverage. I’ve seen then run NASCAR and poker into the ground with their over-coverage to the point where people don’t care about those events anymore. I’m more worried about ESPN buying rights to broadcast MMA events and running the sport into the ground with their over-coverage.

yes i agree wit th you about the people who r just happy about the mma is now

i myself love the fact that mma is grwoing so fast. i want it to continue to grow , and become a very mainstream sport.

The only way I wouldn’t want MMA on ESPN is if they feel that they have to water down the product to get more mainstream coverage (more freak fights & celebrity signings, more rules & prohibitions, etc). Otherwise, bring on ESPN!

I posted before that i have no issue with MMA staying where it is. Don’t misunderstand stand me, its not like I hope mma does not grow but it just has no bearing on my enjoyment of the sport. I feel it is a sport that belongs to the fans atm . I watch MMA live every week so there is my ESPN fix. And lets get real about the boxing nonsense … the head line over at SI.com is “Don’t hold breath for Manny-Money after unwatchable Clottey fight” not exactly good press for the 1-2 big boxing cards a year. I like what you are doing Luke but I just don’t see what the point is. What would you have us fans do? Say we agree then what? I guess what Im saying is give us some thoughts on what you think should be done?
