Today on MMA Nation on 106.7 The Fan: Scott Christ, Pacquiao/Boxing Talk, UFC in April Rumors, More

Live Videos by Ustream

Remember, our new time slot from now on: Sundays 9 to 11pm EST.

Today on "MMA Nation" we'll be joined by the Editor-in-Chief Scott Christ of Bad Left Hook. We'll talk to Christ about last night's Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight, James Toney signing with the UFC and HBO's claim that there is only a 5 percent crossover between the MMA and boxing audiences.

We'll also go deeper into potential UFC vs. Strikeforce in April talk as well as cover all the news from the week in MMA.

"MMA Nation" will air tonight 9:00pm EST to 11:00pm EST on 106.7 The Fan. To listen live over the Internet, go to The Fan's website and click "Listen Live".

I'm also on Twitter: @mmanation.

"MMA Nation" is also available by podcast on iTunes. For now, iTunes is disabled, but the show will be posted on the station's website soon afterward. I'll be sure to put a post up when they're ready to go. And when we're back on iTunes, I'll put up a link to that as well.

Number to call: 800-636-1067

Email here.

Talk to you then.

UPDATE: Well, I just now found out the show is being pushed to the HD signal due to whatever it's due to. Unless you've got an HD tuner and live in DC, you'll have to wait for the podcasts.

People don't like it when I complain about being on HD radio, but candidly, you don't have the slightest clue how unbelievably frustrating this is. So, if you're outside of the area, just wait for the podcasts. That's the best I can do.

UPDATE IIEB from The Sports Junkies had an excellent idea: stream the show live over UStream.tv. So, that's what we're going to try. I've never done it before, so I'll need folks to tell me if it's working or not. Here's my channel. I'm going to try to embed the player right here on BE. Stay tuned.

Close call on that phone number. Glad Luke caught it, I’d be bummed if the plug was pulled on the live stream on the first try. I’ve never listened live before, but I’m digging the live stream.

And DAMN does Luke look like Matt Brown. It’s creepy. But if there was anyone you could end up being a look alike for, Matt Brown’s not so bad. He could look like Josh Barnett…image how that one would go over.

TJ Desantis on Sherdog radio

Honestly believes that James Toney would stand a decent chance of KO’ing Randy Couture and would “destroy” Cro Cop.

People have crazy man love for boxers.I guess TJ totally forgot about UFC 1-10.

I don’t like Cro Cop’s chances in any fight at this point, I wouldn’t be surprised if Toney cracked him hard and ended it early. But Randy…nah. I see Randy winning that 8/10 times. I give those other two times to Toney, simply because Randy can get caught, and Toney is a boxer, not just any boxer, but one who has seen championship gold.

by Kaleb Kelchner on Mar 14, 2010 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Although randy is slowing down and has been getting tagged in his last few fights, 20 seconds after the bell rang he’d have Toney in a clinch and that would be the end.

by Benicio on Mar 14, 2010 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Thats what I’m thinking. But, Toney would know this, and look to knock his head off.

I don’t think Toney would ever win against either guy, but I keep an open mind with this sort of thing. And Cro Cop, well, keep expectations low, and it won’t hurt as bad when he’s on the mat staring at the lights Gonzaga style.

by Kaleb Kelchner on Mar 14, 2010 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Couture would avoid the upper body clinch

For that very reason. He’s no dummy. He knows Toney would have a very hard time defending a low double or single.Randy has been wrestling for 40 years. He can take down Toney with anything he wants.

Ankle Pick, for the win! Randy might be Greco Roman wrestling, but he knows what to do.

I’d really love to see Toney get wrecked by Couture.

Boxer’s can’t handle getting kicked,at all.Watch every boxer who has gone into K-1.Look at Ray Mercer against Bonjasky, for example.Cro Cop would just kick Toney’s leg’s out from under him,Yoshida style.

Randy would just shoot a quick low double on Toney (to avoid his hands),hit him a couple times from on top, make him roll over, and tap him with a RNC.That’s exactly how it would go down, every time.Exactly like every striker vs grappler match from the early UFCs.

It really depends on how a fighter follows a gameplan, If Couture tries to test him he can get tagged. Even CroCop might try to submit Toney

Cro Cop actually has some of the nastiest ground and pound in the heavy weight division. If he took down Toney,it would be ugly.

Maybe. But Rampage Jackson is basically a boxer in the striking department, and he’s made a career out of his standup. I know its different, but still. And for what its worth, he went over to K-1 and knocked out a respected kickboxer, without ever throwing a single kick.

by TLow on Mar 15, 2010 12:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Boxers

The one thing that boxing fans, and boxers themselves seem to ignore, is that the whole premise of boxing more or less becomes completely null in MMA. Yes, you will use your hands to hit an opponent…but, many defensive techniques have to be modified. You can’t bob and weave freely, due to kicks and knees…the whole game is different.

A PURE boxer in MMA, is a dead man. Now, if say, a boxer were to do for boxing, what Machida did for karate…that would be a scary individual.

I gotta say, I can see the WEC getting folded into the UFC before Strikeforce dies. If the UFC could turn the WEC belts into the quality belts of their current weightclasses, many of their scheduling troubles would be fixed. Not to mention more draws for their PPV’s.

Gonzaga has a great jaw

He’s only been put down by Carwin.Against Couture and Werdum,he got beat down over the course of several minutes, then got TKO’ed after he went to the fetal position.

I like Dos Santos to beat down Gonzaga over a long period of time, and stop him in the third round.

Couture and Werdum aren't exactly great strikers/powerful strikers...

and I think Dos Santos has Carwin-esque power, or close to it, and far better boxing technique.

by Anton Tabuena on Mar 14, 2010 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Dos Santos couldn't even knock down Cro Cop

Unless he hits Gonzaga with an uppercut from hell,he’ll end up beating him down and making him quit over the course of 10-12 minutes.

Cro Cop,compared to Gonzaga,is ultra fragile

And Dos Santos couldn’t even knock him down.Once.He wobbled him a few times, but never dropped him.Now you’re telling me he’s going to make a guy with an iron jaw go to lah-lah land?

Iron jaw?

cause powerful strikers Couture and Werdum couldn’t drop him? that’s your basis?

by Anton Tabuena on Mar 14, 2010 10:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Couture and Werdum didn't drop him

Couture took him down and TKO’ed him after beating him up for 10 minutes. In the Werdum fight,Gonzaga literally sat down to avoid taking any more knees. In both cases,he ended up in the fetal position, covering up,and got TKO’ed.

That has nothing to do with your jaw. That has to do with your heart, and your willingness/ability to take punishment.

I'm not saying he has a weak jaw..

but saying that he has an “iron jaw” because 2 guys without much power couldn’t drop him, is a weak argument.

by Anton Tabuena on Mar 14, 2010 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn't say that

I’m saying he’s got an iron jaw because he’s taken a lot of good shots over a pretty long career.Note that he didn’t get stopped in the fights against Couture and Werdum until he got tired. That had more to do with it than anything.

I mean,c’mon-he got slammed by Couture, his own knee came down incredibly hard and smashed his own nose flat as a pancake, and he managed to scramble back to his feet literally 2 seconds later-with Randy Couture trying to hold him down.

I’m not saying Dos Santos can’t knock him out,I’m just saying he’s most likely going to have to wear him down with a lot of shots.I don’t think he’s going to go in there and hit him with one shot like Carwin did and put his lights out, unless it’s an uppercut thrown from last week.

Unless Gonzaga lands a miracle head kick, or wants to take him down immediately (doubt it), then were in unknown territory and that’s hard to predict.

So you think he drops him with a grazing punch then misses with everything after that?

C’mon,Gonzaga is a quality heavyweight. He’s going to stick around for awhile against Cigano, espically with the threat of a takedown.

Wow

Almost 100 comments for an MMA Nation post. Isn’t this unheard of?

I guess I should stop spamming now.

haha :P

My recent goal was to actually comment less on posts now since I’ve found out that I already have a total of 11115 comments in BE in less than 1 and 1/2 years. But liveblog-ish posts makes it harder to stay away. haha :)

Well, compared to some of the lovely comments that have been popping up lately, with the influx of trolls…I don’t think you’ll hear anyone complain.

that's also part

of why I’m trying to comment less.. some of the newer guys who troll annoy me a lot… Especially when they all come out in full force on every Fedor/Brock/Toney/M-1 article and even posts by Kid Nate. haha

First, love this format. Its a great addition and the bugs will get worked out. You can interact with live internet fans without alienating your HD listener.
Second, more to the “listener” point. Yes I understand that there are likely more people in studio then listening on HD radio. Its brand new and you have a niche show. I also understand you have great difficulties with the show getting on air. This is another issue not related to the HD radio format. Its brand new and having a show at all is much better then no show. Bitch all you want about problems you have and not being on the regular station. But bashing the format is awkward as hell. You are basically a good tool for selling the HD format. Don’t make people feel like mooks because they have one.

Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
