Agreed, I used to be into it about ten years ago but anymore I barely even pay attention to it.

I can agree with that, espeically as far as PPV buyership goes
I buy nearly all MMA PPVs and I have never bought a boxing PPV. Now back in the day I’d bought Tyson and Holyfield etc but i haven’t and don’t plan on paying to watch boxing.
From my experiences with other boxing and mma fans it might be a little higher – 10 perecent – but there’s still not much crossover.
And I’m watching tonight. Pacman by TKO in the 10th.

Actually I’m watching it tomorrow because I have to go to a friends screening tonight. Shit.

Mayweather is mad
That hes great at a sport that is fading out. I bet hes a closet MMA fan. Mayweather has a huge ego and you better believe he wishes he knew some jits and grappling. Hes an attn whore. He knows MMA has the brighter future and hes bitter. Thats why hes always defending boxings history and this and that. He acts like he doesnt know anything about MMA but sure knows about Versus, Spike and UFC Primetime. He mentioned it in his last interview. Lol Cmon money, its never too late. Get out there and get some MMA skills. Ask Dana for a fat contract. Put your money where your mouth is. =)

5% crossover.
I believe there is only 5% crossover. Look at the fans. A large percent of UFC are beteen 18- 35, Boxing fans are usually over 30. Also, many boxing fans think MMA is barbaric, where as, many MMA fans think Boxing is boring. I will go out on a limb and say that many boxing fans are baseball fans too. On that note, I think many MMA fans are fans of NFL or NHL. The fans of boxing like the sport for the subtle details, MMA fans are adrenaline junkies. Two different sports, two different fan types.

i would agree with most of that
but i think football fans are both mma and boxing, alot of older people still watch football., And alot of football fans dont lke either.
same

This comment makes the most sense to me. I loved boxing for a long time, even into the early UFC’s. But when MMA started to really get going, I realized how much more fun it was than boxing. I’ll go and watch boxing every once in a while, but the guys who stayed on the boxing bandwagon are securely buckled down to their seats.
Boxing is just as much a part of MMA as wrestling and jiu jitsu, but boxing has always been significantly more hostile due to them being a big money sport. I say keep the bullshit aside, Dana does a pretty good job of it.

alot of boxing fans are outirght jelous!!!!
They just always try to put down mma every chance they get.
I was a boxing fan for about 20
years and switched over to MMA.
Me too..
I can see how that 5% could be possible.. I think alot of MMA fans used to be Boxing fans but once we fell for MMA, we just dont look at Boxing the same as we used too.
What really bugged
the shit out of me were the 15-0 prospects that just couldn’t fight.
I definitely would have tuned in for Mayweather vs Pacman
but this fight doesn’t really do much for me as a less than casual boxing fan.
Why is it still being implied that the UFC is making up numbers?
The UFC doesnt report shit. The closest the UFC ever did is confirm that UFC 100 did over 1.5 million buys because Dana said if it did he would base jump off whatever and said he planned to but unless I missed it he never did.
Dave Meltzer is the one that reports numbers and again he doesnt get his numbers from the UFC he gets it from cable and satellite companies.
There are a lot of private companies in this country that dont release numbers (including the UFC) and are not gonna allow people to see how much their making just to shut up somebody like Floyd Mayweather. The idea that since your not opening your books to Golden Boy or Top Rank and not releasing your info that your lying is ridculous.
I watch K-1 and most of the big boxing fights. Sometimes I wonder how the people who will religiously watch mediocre standup fights in UFC would not be interested in boxing or kickboxing. But then I quickly remember that these are people who for the most part care more about branding and WWE-style storylines than what is actually going on in the cage.

the fact that more people would rather watch Kimbo fight than Jose Aldo, Junior Dos Santos, Jon Jones, and many others drives me insane or the fact that more people would rather watch Herschel Walker over Jacare, Thomson and Melendez is just baffaling.
I understand wanting to see someone with personality but give me a great fighter and a great fight over a “big” name any day of the week. But apparently I’m in the minority on that.
I look at Kimbo and Walker as trojan horses. They get people to turn on the TV when MMA is happening, and with a little luck, they’ll stick around for the “real” fights and become fans of the good fighters. I still think there is a “right” and “wrong” way of using celebrity fighters, but I’ve come to accept that they’ll be there, and I try to see the positive side of it.
What I am trying to get at is, there are people who enjoy watching mid-level UFC fighters stand outside kicking range shucking around like morons, resetting every 3 seconds and shadowboxing. But then they won’t even give a fight between two high level K-1 fighters or boxers a chance. Apparently watching kickboxers is not that appealing, but watching two wrestlers pretend to be kickboxers is.
Agreed in full
if you’ve ever been to a live card it’s pretty sad. I was at both Affliction shows and it was basically empty inside up until about a fight before the main event.
I’m sure someone’s mentioned it but the undercard is one thing I love about MMA, I know about the fighters on the undercard and there’s some appeal there, in boxing I’m lucky if I’ve ever even heard of one of the fighters.
I think that sums it about just right...
Although myself i grew up watching boxing and “pro-wrestling” and training in the former and still follow boxing fairly closely. Living in Calgary, Can. pro-wrestling was looked at seriously due to the roots of the Hart Family (The Dungeon), they would come to our high school every year and put on shows for the school and us football players would get to do a couple of matches and choreograph em’. It was cool as hell…
On the part of fans who love “Ultimate Kickboxing”, yet don’t like boxing or even K1 i find it very idiotic. Sometimes i think these are the same people who as youth, their only exposure to Combat sports was either street fights, movies, or WWE. So their expectations of what constitues combat is very limited.
Whats wrong with a little story line behind the fighters or the fights themselves? Going into the fighters lives makes it a little more interesting to me.

I'll always watch boxing when I come across it on tv.
But, I don’t make an effort to follow the day to day news like I do for MMA.
In fact I’ll watch pretty much any type of “Combat” sports I find on tv.
The last boxing PPV I ordered would have been during Tyson’s prime though.
I've never liked boxing. My grandfather and dad both tried to get me into it as a kid, but it never stuck.
It’s just…punching. I never saw the point. It’s great for basic self-defense (where you wouldn’t necessarily want to take it to the ground or get too fancy), and an integral part of MMA, but on it’s own, it seems silly to me. Your mileage may vary, I guess.

there was a time when i followed boxing like i do mma...... now
They dont fight to finish. I hate that!!!
plus, its hard to watch someone fight that i know there is a good chance i could take down and tap out. Although i really like K1 and Muay thai still. Go figure ????
"When i get in there, in his face ,pressin the action,I'm RUFF NECKIN'EM,I'm throwin him around,I'm punchin him,hes punchin me, I'm eatin his shots and I'm Blastin him back in the face he's not goin to be able to handle it ." - Chris Leben on how his fight with Anderson Silva is gonna go.
I have no interest in boxing because...
Every time I watch boxing I can’t help but notice how one dimentional it is. The entire time I watch it I’m think knee the shit out of him!!!!….oh wait you can’t. Elbow him!!!…oh wait you can’t do that either. Kick him!!!!…nope. Take him down…..ah shit this is boxing the ground game doesnt exist. So that leaves me with ummmm punch him I guess since you can’t do much else.
Not watching tonight. I want Mayweather/Pacman and I will accept nothing less.
Keep firing Assholes!

This is a stand every boxing fan should take.

I feel the same way about Fedor vs Lesnar and Silva vs Machida. I guess I won’t be watching anymore mma for awhile.

How?
You said before you won’t watch boxing unless it’s Pacquiao vs Mayweather, therefore you don’t watch boxing. And since you don’t watch boxing but do watch mma, you’re part of the 95% majority that stick to only one of the two sports. So welcome to being nothing special.

Pacquiao fight was lame.
Pacquiao is a great fighter but that just wasn’t great.

Sucks when a fighter is SO good, the fight comes across as predictable and boring. Sucks even more when the opponent is actually a worthy opponent. I actually enjoyed the undercard fights quite a bit, compared to the main event. I really appreciate Manny’s skill, but, unless he’s in the ring with Mayweather, I really don’t care who he fights.

I didn’t have high hopes for the main event. I don’t hold it against Paqquiao but i’m glad I didn’t pay for it. Bring on UFC on Versus which on paper looks like ko fest.

Yeah, I didn’t pay for it either. As I am just a less than casual boxing fan, I don’t see how a great many people could be satisfied with that show. Pacman is a monster, but, that’ll only entertain for the first few rounds. After that, you expect a mercy killing.

I think you could say
that only 5% of boxing fans watch MMA, but I would venture to say 30-40% of MMA fans watch boxing! I used to be a big fan of both, and still a boxing fan, but with the increased amount of televised MMA events and the watered down boxing scene, boxing is becoming increasingly harder to watch. I mean look at the fight tonight, three CRAP prelims followed by an OK main event. The way boxing sets their cards if the main event isn’t an AWESOME fight then the whole sucked, but with MMA they usually have 4-5 fights with the opportunity to be fight of the night. I believe Dana, Zuffa, and the UFC have really raised everybodys expectations when it comes to fight cards.
MMA events are judged as a whole. Boxing puts all it's eggs in one basket, the main event.
that’s why boxing struggles without the huge names.

and thats
exactly why I would rather pay 50 bucks to watch a full 3-4 hour MMA event, and not 50 bucks to watch maybe 1 quality boxing match
