Video Teaser: UFC Undisputed 2010

That
was a fucking terrible teaser. That’s like a girl touching the top button on your pants, saying “So you want a blowjob?” Then walking the hell away. Damn you Dana White

Not really
Generally teasers released by companies are like “Oooh look what we can do noooow”. This is less shiny new things and more BJ unexcitedly muttering

That trailer was garbage.
I don’ expect them to show a lot but gawd dam the animation they showed did not look good.
Are you an animator?
The unfortunate thing about sports games is that animation is to context specific and animators have trouble negotiating that with collision detection. The first game’s animation was passable and I’ve seen some promising things from footage of this iteration that would suggest the animation is significantly improved. If you want to watch a real fight…….. watch a real fight.

trouble negotiating that with collision detection
But isn’t the collision (oabb, aabb, capsules, per-poly, heirarchy) generally built-on and driven-by the joint transforms? Or are you referring more to motion graphs or trees being a problem?
It’s troublesome to effect reflex animations when you need a model to return to the original stance/animation. It would seem “natural” to use physics engines to create more organic reactions to strikes/takedowns, but resets have to happen in short order. I’d love to see sports games get more creative with free-form physics engines (like Backbreaker— which is coming out on the same day as UFC 2010, actually), but they’re just not there yet. Nor do I expect any MMA titles to be after so short a window of experience (after the long layover). You want to put the onus on someone, start bitching about EA essentially using the exact same animation structures they’ve been employing since Madden 2001.

I definitely agree. For an MA game I’d really love to the see them run an ik step-planner for the lower half so we can get better footwork and movement.
True
I hope they get more ambitious on a year-to-year basis, but I don’t expect anything too wild this time out. If EA weren’t a bunch of bullshitters, they’d take their time and try to put such a physics engine into place, but they’re likely to make a product that is very similar to THQ’s.

Are you referring to it looking choppy? Or something more subtle in the motion itself?
Not attacking, just curious. I’m learning some of this stuff now and am curious what people see as being a problem.
Resetting
People find the return to the “idle/stance” animation inorganic. Rightfully so, sure— but it’s not a THQ specific issue. It entirely defeats the purpose of isolating this game as an example of that.

I believe that's the video
The real anims will be as smooth as your Xbox’s framerate. This looks like it was capped at regular speed and slowed down in a video editor instead of capped at the slower speed.
goddammed awful. These guys spend anywhere between 5-20 million to produce a video game, and they can’t drop 200K for a decent commercial?
Sure glad Lesnar got his shit straightened out.
THQ have never excelled at marketing
I just want to see live footage of a fight instead of all this dick teasing.

Yeah
I mentioned it above, actually. I hope that turns out well.

Christ people,
This is a teaser for a trailer, not a trailer itself. They just want to let you know that the official trailer for the entire game will be opening on monday. This is the trailer you’re going to be seeing on tv and stuff. I know they probably turned some of you off, but they are just trying to create some hype for a debut.

Graphics and animation wasn’t the issue with 2009. The problem was poor balance between different techniques. I stopped playing MP when all you did was stepstrike and body punch spam. Ridiculous.
Oh yeah, and I stopped playing single player when things got repetetive after 2 hrs.

This trailer makes me feel like the Suns coach last night...

"Well, yes, but I’m afraid I prematurely shot my wad on what was supposed to be a dry run, if you will, so now I’m afraid I have something of a mess on my hands." - Tobias Fünke
"There are just so many poorly chosen words in that sentence." - Michael Bluth
One of my favorite lines from the best TV show ever.
