Snapshot of the Day: Matt Serra Helps Dan Hardy Prepare for Georges St-Pierre

Is it all mind games or will Matt Serra give Dan Hardy some insight into how to beat GSP?

I’m pretty sure that GSP doesn’t let himself get caught up in psychological stuff anymore. Since Hughes 2 he’s been pretty much untouchable in that sense. It’s like he became spiritual or something. It’s funny watching the Hardy camp try and talk themselves into figuring it out though. “We just have to hit him a couple of times cleanly, because GSP doesn’t take very well to getting hit”. I hope he’s got a backup plan, because if Alves didn’t get any clean shots in, Hardy’s going to have a hell of a time.

i understand the reasoning for Hardy to go to Serra. He did beat George. But what he can get from Serra he can watch on tape. Training with him serves no real purpose other than to take a dig at GSP and try to get inside his head.

by JaTinkles on Mar 12, 2010 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure

the producers of this had a say in it… pretty pathetic.

by bleve_ on Mar 12, 2010 5:03 PM EST up reply actions

so your complete assumption makes it pathetic?

What else is he supposed to do if he flew over 3 weeks early? twiddle his thumbs? Train with Renzo? Do you know of some better option in the area?

by Phildo on Mar 12, 2010 5:24 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

pretty sure that hardy’s own video blog (not done by the UFC) mentioned an unexpected change of plans with his camp. something along the lines of “they’re moving us”.

by woooburn on Mar 12, 2010 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

they said that on the show also.

no matter who came up with the idea, what is wrong with training with one of the most well known camps in the area when you are away from home for 3 weeks before the biggest fight of your life?

by Phildo on Mar 12, 2010 5:49 PM EST up reply actions

guess i misinterpreted the conversation, but i thought bleve_ was saying it was pathetic that the production crew had an influence over him having to move camps… which i would tend to agree with. has nothing to do with whether or not serra is a legit person to learn from. just thought it was something the tv folks should stay out of is all. to each their own.

by woooburn on Mar 12, 2010 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

Calm down dude

there’s nothing wrong with training with Serra, the point was that it was mostly likely pushed upon him to make good tv… you know, manufactured and forced, just like it appeared.

by bleve_ on Mar 12, 2010 6:35 PM EST up reply actions

That Renzo post was the only intelligent comment made on this page. For anyone who couldn’t tell from Hardy’s accent, he’s not from New Jersey. He decided to make the trip over here a few weeks early which is probably a good decision if you’ve read Crocop’s recent statements about traveling just days before a fight. A cynic might say he decided to train so that Dana would have footage for UFC Primetime but maybe he decided to train because he wants to be in the best shape possible for his fight. Again, the cynic might say that he decided to train with Serra because its dramatic but maybe he decided to train with Serra since he’s a world class black belt.

by Firebush on Mar 12, 2010 6:29 PM EST up reply actions

I think his early arrival in Jersey is legit

just think they used Serra to add some drama.

Not that Serra would be a bad guy to train with, but this is purely done for hype for the Primetime show. Hardy’s got his stable of coaches. 2 weeks with Serra wouldn’t make a difference either way.

by Hardcharger on Mar 12, 2010 5:08 PM EST reply actions

Did they really need to meet, couldn’t Serra have just told him “aim for the back of the ear” through a text?

by ufc4 on Mar 12, 2010 5:10 PM EST via mobile reply actions

They both hand-write notes

Gotta cross-reference trash talks scripts to make sure there’s no overlap.

by Tedd Welch on Mar 12, 2010 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

SCRIPTED?

The phone call to Serra while Hardy was driving to see if Matt was nearing closer to the gym sounded pretty rehearsed or unnatural.

Not saying anything, just that the UFC is trying to add some more drama themselves for ratings purposes.

by ADAMantium on Mar 12, 2010 5:12 PM EST reply actions

no way it was scripted, I bet Hardy drives around with a camera crew in his car all the time.

GSP is my favorite fighter but I wish just once he’d come out and say “Hardy is a great fighter and I have a ton of respect for him but in all honesty I should destroy him and if this fight gets past the second round I’ll be shocked”.

by ufc4 on Mar 12, 2010 5:34 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

GSP has to convince himself that Hardy is far more dangerous than he is. It is his mental crutch.

by ufc4 on Mar 12, 2010 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

to be honest...

i think respect is important to gsp and vocalizing something helps one remain humble even when everyone is telling him, “eh, you’ll destroy hardy eh.” know what i mean?

by cagefightonacid on Mar 12, 2010 8:29 PM EST up reply actions

The way they ended it was really lame. It suddenly felt like a reality show that had been entirely rehearsed and directed by a bunch of lame producers with a false sense of drama.
Camera pans over to Serra’s smiling face, then fade to black DUM DUM DUUUUUM!!!

So you thought that Hardy didn’t have a chance? That was before you knew that Serra was going to teach him the secret of beating GSP—march right in there and wing your right hand as hard as you possibly can at the side of his face.

by Dooda on Mar 12, 2010 5:18 PM EST reply actions

Although I guess a little insight from someone who’s fought GSP 2x relatively recently is better than most other fighters.

Kidding aside, I don’t even read comics, I read some 15 years ago, that’s it, but when you talk about fighters and when you talk about GSP, super heroes references kinda come naturally.

yeah, totally…. for some reason fighters are easy to relate heros to. on a side note, comics have been definitely influenced by mma in recent years; armbars and subs are appearing all over the place and there are a lot of fighters named randomly in scripts
