Dana White knew nothing about combat sports before he met Floyd Mayweather:
"My uncle Jeff Mayweather is the one who started Dana White off," said Floyd Mayweather. "I first met Dana White in 1996. He was a boxing aerobics trainer but he didn't know nothing about boxing."
Mayweather said he introduced Dana White to a woman with deep pockets and the rest is history.

Floyd gets asked about MMA often.
It must really bug the crap out of him. Some boxing guys really hate MMA.

I agree, this was random but he sounded very articulate which surprised me for some reason

So Mayweather in actuality is responsible for MMA today as we know it then huh?
Would love to see Floyd vs Bj. Wouldn’t you? Floyd would be what a 45er though right? Maybe he puts on some weight trying to bring up that takedown defense or something.
Regardless that would be a huge match. Even if BJ decided to keep it standing the entire match I think it would be an epic fight.
Floyd is wayy to fast
for a flying knee. Floyd would dissect anyone in MMAs lower weight classes. Floyd is one of the all time great defensive boxers of all time
2 things
1. its easy to be fast when you only have to worry about being punched
when you add in kicks , knees , takedowns …ect it becomes alot more confusing and difficult to predict , this is my personal assessment from my time training
2. aldo would take floyd down and smash him

Well this is more of a standup discussion as we have Aldo vs Mayweather and not Mike Brown vs Mayweather.
Obviously MMA > Boxing ground skills. We know that. This is not the point of the discussion. Not trying to be rude just trying to clarify.
I think Aldo vs Mayweather on the stand up could be very interesting. I can’t really say if one would win definitive or not which is also why I am so interested in seeing a fight like that.
You would think to give Floyd the edge but kicks do change a fighters game. A guy of Aldo’s speed would give anyone a hard time as well. It sure would be a huge matchup in my book.
Our only match up of seeing top notch boxing vs Aldo’s kickboxing would be a Bj Penn fight. We may eventually get this so hopefully we do. Until then I guess we will speculate.
if we are speculating purely stand up where does that leave the clinch game
could aldo force floyd to the fence , mash him in there and dirty box/knee him to death

“It’s a whole different world. People talk about it (like they’re the same sport) but do not confuse the two. Boxing and MMA are two different worlds. You look at someone like a (Floyd) Mayweather or a (Manny) Pacquiao who do that with just the hands, they’re incredible.”
Jens Pulver said this in the leadup to the Sylvia / Mercer fight. He felt Sylvia was undestimating Mercer, which he did and paid for later. Jens has a point: when you have guys like Mayweather who can do what they do with just their hands – watch out. Especially in 4 oz gloves. I think Floyd can destroy anyone if they simply stood with him. I mean, we saw how great Frankie’s boxing and footwork looked against Sherk. Well, Floyd is on a whole other level – another world even. Only an idiot would stand with him. Sure, there are other factors to the standup game like kicks and the clinch, etc, but I would still pick Floyd in a pure standup match.
You have to be the man... you have to be very, like, alpha male with her. You know? Decide what you do and everything. So, show her who's the boss, you know? - GSP

So, you would pick FMJ as a favorite in a boxing match. No where close in a K-1 or MMA match. Loud and clear.

I think if anything, larger gloves would favor Floyd, given that he’s trained his whole life with them. Also, larger gloves play a part in his defensive style, as they cover more of the body and his opponent’s larger gloves have to find bigger gaps in order to get through.

If you know floyd...
you would know that aldo wouldnt even be competive in the stand up game with him. Just look at his fight with Marquez (who is top 5 p4p) , he made him look like an amateur.
And when was the last time we saw aldo shoot in for a TD ?
When was the last time he fought someone with ZERO ground game?
And only a full on MMA fight or a strictly boxing match would be uncompetitive between these guys
K-1 style, who knows.
by The Flying Gentleman on Mar 12, 2010 7:09 PM EST up reply actions
K-1 style, who knows.
I do. Properly executed leg kicks are devastating to someone who is not used to them (and even to fighters who are). See almost any boxer vs. kickboxer fight as a reference for why Aldo or any mid-level kickboxer would beat Mayweather in a K-1 fight. And this is before the clinch game is even discussed.
Obviously Floyd wins a boxing match.

Yea Floyd is in Aldo’s weight. Which makes it better. Still Bj’s employs a heavy boxing style standup. Would like to see what happens.
I think Floyd would definiltey have to make some major adjustments for a striker like ALDO. Aldo is so quick he at minimum matches Floyd in speed. That would be a hell of a fight that for sure.
Perhaps Floyd wouldn’t be the best guy to transfer over as he employs more of a Machida likes strategy.
What people really want to see is a boxer who is known for his power in the boxing world against these MMA fighters with the small gloves. People want to see a bloodbath.
PACMAN fighting some of these smaller guys would be very very interesting in a stand up war. Pac man is coming at you and comin non stop with a good chin and serious power in his hands.
Pac man and perhaps the prime Tyson are the two guys I wish I could see competiting in stand up wars in MMA.
So that woman’s name was Lorenzo and Dan Fertitta?

Who the hell is Dan?
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
Little known fact
There used to be three Fertitas until Dan decided he wanted to become the greatest circus clown that ever lived.
His family disowned him, and he was never mentioned again.

It is true,
Al Gore has invented all things inventable.
wow way to totally not answer the question floyd
cool story thats probably completely bs but the reporter asked him a different question
Floyd is SMART. Every dig he makes at the UFC or DW or whatever gets him plastered on just about every MMA blog in the world. Easy route to increasing media exposure, and this time a reporter handed him the ammo for it.
God I would love to see Floyd in the UFC. He would rape. Guy has all the skills. Sick boxing, speed, power, finesse. If he was even halfway decent at takedown defense he would make a quick run at the title..
ur nuts, Jose Aldo or Bj Penn would murder him, 9 out of 10 fights hit the ground and when it does, Floyd would be clueless and get battered or submitted within 1 minute. If they box only, Floyd wins.
by ZeroZ20 on Mar 12, 2010 4:47 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
Did you seriously just say Jose Aldo would murder one of the best boxers of all time? Really? Really??
Wow.
if any MMA fighter fought Floyd, hed be a fool not to take him down and when that happens its OVER. Boxing is not fighting, its one aspect of fighting. In a FIGHT, Floyd would be dismantled. Every fight starts out standing up, and thats his only chance at survival. Anybody can land a punch, the most unathletic out of shape uncoordinated person in the world could still land a shot, but once it hits the ground, if you dont know what ur doing, u will 100% get hurt, badly.

I’m sorry, I’m just laughing at your statement that Aldo would murder Floyd.
I mean, wow. You do realize that Floydis in a completely different league than most of your MMA heroes right? Even BJ Penn. I know MMA is different than boxing, but there is no way in this life that Aldo could ever hang with Floyd in a fight.
In an MMA fight?
You’re the crazy one. Floyd’s boxing is amazing boxing, but he’d have his lead leg hanging out for kicks and he’ll quickly learn that his beautiful shoulder roll doesn’t do a whole lot with 4oz gloves. Not to mention his footwork is designed to cut angles in a square ring, not an octagon, hexagon, or circle. It would be a competitive fight at striking distsnce under MMA rules, but favoring Floyd.
Until you remember than Aldo knows how to cut off an octagon with his footwork, and could establish a clinch then brutalize him. Or take him down and show off his Nova Uniao black belt. Or hold him against the cage, knee PBFs thighs until his power and movement is gone, and then either move to the clinch, chop out his legs to a TKO, or set up a head kick (which has better range than Floyd’s hands).
MMA fighters are better at MMA. Boxers are better at boxing. Wakeboarders are better at wakeboarding.

lol, i feel ur sarcasm(MMA Heros), its ok you dont have to take this personally, like every single boxing fan does. but i do notice u said FIGHT, like i did. im not talking just a boxing match or even just an MMA fight, Floyd Trains in 1……1 aspect of combat sports. Jose Aldo trains in them all, Boxing, Jiu-Jitsu, Wrestling, Muay Thai. This kid was primarily trained in Jiu Jitsu growing up, but hes been knocking people out constantly, 9 in a row to be exact. Floyd is a way better boxer than he’ll ever be. but Floyd is not nearly as versatilely trained in FIGHTING as Jose Aldo, or BJ Penn, or Urijah Faber, or Miguel Torres. Step outside of your boxing mentality, these guys step in a boxing ring with Floyd Mayweather and they get embarrassed, they FIGHT him, MMA or on the street, hes getting submitted or tko’d on the ground, case closed. Flyod has zero training besides Boxing.
Yupp. The only scary moment is trying to close the distance. All a boxer needs is one clean shot and 9/10 times it’s lights out. But, once a clinch is established, i don’t think a boxer would know what to do other then hug it out. By that time it’s to the ground and someone’s leaving with a limb.
"For your information, I would like to ask a question."

bjj black belt jose aldo?
Yes he would murder him. Standing with leg kicks, Thai clinch and knees. On the ground…. with what ever he wanted.

you’re not going to get that many people to agree with you here (if any). Truth of the matter is that in MMA, you just can’t compete with one style nowadays. It doesn’t matter if you have the best hands in the business, that’s one dimensional, MMA is three dimensional, striking, clinch and ground. Sure, if they were going to fight in boxing rules, Aldo would most likely not last two minutes with Floyd, but in MMA it’s a different story. Why would Aldo stay in range with Floyd? He would pick him apart from the outside and/or take him to the ground.
I’m not saying Floyd would get schooled by everyone in MMA, but if he competes in the higher levels (such as the WEC), chances are he wouldn’t win that many fights (if any).
Don’t let anger get in the way of comprehension
i like boxing.
But he doesn’t know how to use his whole body as a weapon. Aldo does, and would. I would put a world class bjj purple belt in there with Floyd and he would get tapped in 30 sec.

ALDO TAKES IT EASY
between the thai clinch and knees. No need to go to the ground.
Seriously Floyd in an amaxing boxer, but between his traditional boxing stance (leg in front) and lack of experience using anything but his hands, he’s done. Aldo can choose where to finish the fight, and I’m not even an Aldo fan.
Please use some common sense… Floyds hands are lethal, but he has little more then a punchers chance. Against any high level MT guy he’s going to have issues with the kicks and the Clinch… against any grappler he is done instantly. Lets not pretend the odds are in his favor.
I think it's a little strange
That people think the once-in-a-generation gifts that Floyd possesses wouldn’t be at all transferable to an MMA ring. Floyd’s reflexes are unearthly. He makes fighters look drunk. Think Forrest Griffin trying to hit Anderson Silva, only a million times worse.
Assuming he did even a little bit of sprawl’n’brawl type training ahead of the fight, he would be a problem for anyone in his weight class in MMA. Sure, he’d probably still get exposed and beaten by a good wrestler or BJJ fighter, but let’s climb down from suggesting that perhaps the best boxer in the world would get murdered if he walked in an MMA ring.
To put it another way, if the widely accepted best amateur wrestler in the world decided to try his hand at MMA, we’d all be eager to see what he could do.

Wrestlers have had a lot more success in MMA than boxers.
by HarmlessNinja on Mar 13, 2010 11:31 AM EST up reply actions
Right, but
Successful wrestlers have a huge incentive to go into MMA, whereas a successful boxer — like someone of Mayweather’s caliber — would be giving up millions to switch sports.
I don’t think we’ve had a good example of what would happen if a first-rate boxer in his prime got into MMA.

Floyd is will defend his sport from all avenues, which is understandable, but lets face it, Boxing is a terribly ran business, they put no money back into their sport and you could fault Floyd first and foremost for that bc hes the biggest draw in boxing and gets paid the most. name 1 fight on the under card of this Saturday Pacman/Clottey fight?? 9.9 people out of 10 cant do it. And the UFC was doing 1 hour preview shows for its cards b4 HBO was doing their 24/7 show, so bada bing! I love boxing, but the Fighters, Promoters, Managers, Agents, Trainers need to put back into their sport more.
I love how people that all a good boxer needs to do is learn takedown defense, they make it sound like its so easy. They forget that even if a high level boxer learned anti-wrestling at a fast pace he would still be 10+ years behind in the anti-wrestling department
Sure but its alot easier to learn how to survive the ground game. The ground def is quickly surpassing the ground offense. back in the day people where getting tkoed all the time. Now not so much.
Suggesting that Florf has any better or worse of a chance than an olympic gold medalist wrestler is assinine.
If you are a champ from a combat sport you are 100% a legitmate threat.
Many Muay Thai champs are boxers who know how to defend the kick.
Do not overexaggerate MMA and underrate boxing.
Think 2 or 3 time gold medalist olympic wresler when you talk Floyd Mayweather or 10 time Abu Dhabi champ. Its just another aspect of the game
whenever i hear floyd speak, i hear this...
