UFC Primetime: St-Pierre vs. Hardy Part 1 - Draws 1 Million Viewers

The 30-minute show drew 1 million viewers during its initial run at 10 p.m. ET/PT. [the highest rated "Countdown" show ever]

The debut episode of "UFC Primetime: St-Pierre vs. Penn" was the previous record-holder with an average audience of 880,000 viewers.

The viewership totals included solid numbers in two coveted demographics: a 1.1 rating among males ages 18 to 34, as well as a 1.0 figure among males 18 to 49.

Yeah, GSP is a legit star, bigtime. If he was a great hockey player too they’d make him grand imperial ruler of Canada.

National Hero Sidney Crosby will win all accolades for Athlete of the Year honours from the Canadian media. And rightly so.

But GSP will be second.

About 18 million Canadians were watching that game.

16.6 million average rating, with 26.5 million Canadians watching at least some of the game.

26.5 million being about 80% of the population of the country.

I live by a major highway, and it was deserted. I could have safetly walked across the highway 400 without worrying about getting hit during that game.

It was absurd. Crosby dissapears for 3 games without a simgle point and then pops up out of nowhere and scores the biggest goal of his entire fucking career.

I watched the game from the Whistler village square, packed with hundreds of people. Never experienced an atmosphere like that in my life, and feel reasonably confident I never will again.

Like I said. Sidney Crosby. National Hero.

Probably biggest goal in Canada’s hockey history since the one scored against the historic Russians way back when.

Ariel Helwani and Fanhouse were there to capture the moment.

This is a great video, because they watch the whole game with a bunch of fans and you get the reactions for every goal. The reaction to Crosby’s game winning goal is priceless. Honestly, I will never ever forget what it was like in Vancouver that day. Those two weeks were the best time I’ve had in the city.

im a dunce but how do they know who watches what. I know how it works in radio but how does it work in tv.

by JaTinkles on Mar 11, 2010 7:18 PM EST reply actions

http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/question433.htm

Nielsen uses a technique called statistical sampling to rate the shows — the same technique that pollsters use to predict the outcome of elections. Nielsen creates a “sample audience” and then counts how many in that audience view each program. Nielsen then extrapolates from the sample and estimates the number of viewers in the entire population watching the show. That’s a simple way of explaining what is a complicated, extensive process. Nielsen relies mainly on information collected from TV set meters that it installs, and then combines this information with huge databases of the programs that appear on each TV station and cable channel.

by ufc4 on Mar 11, 2010 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

That sounds like a perfectly accurate and not at all antiquated way to determine ratings.

by Chris Nelson on Mar 11, 2010 7:28 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, you’d think there’d be an easier way to do this nowadays with all the cable boxes, DVR’s, TIVO, etc.

by ufc4 on Mar 11, 2010 7:31 PM EST up reply actions

They've actually significantly modernized

in recent years. Before the Nielsen boxes, people had to write everything they watched down in journals and mail them in.

by Trysdor on Mar 11, 2010 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

I remember hearing about that as a kid. So silly.

by Chris Nelson on Mar 11, 2010 7:38 PM EST up reply actions

But for radio.

I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.

by Llewdor on Mar 11, 2010 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

They still do it for radio in Canada as recently as two years ago.

But you forget, they gave you two dollars to do it, so everyone was pretty sure the margin of error was next to nothing.

by Dooda on Mar 12, 2010 3:21 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure about that

Sure I’ll be surer to send something in, but will it be honest?
Why write down 10 things if one will get me the money?
Maybe I’m embarassed I watched something even if its confidential?
Maybe being a rater made me watch things more mindfully?
There isn’t necessarily a better system, but its far from perfect.

by SES 84 on Mar 12, 2010 8:20 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah I was being sarcastic. $2 doesn’t seem like enough money to make sure people did an accurate job. I worked in the Radio industry and the way the ratings came out was the dirty little secret joke amongst everyone, yet it was the deciding factor on where millions of dollars were spent.

by Dooda on Mar 12, 2010 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

not really silly

maybe primitive… but a brilliant thing to do.

the first person to say… hey, maybe we should take some time and figure out what people are watching, was a genius and an innovator.

by ruckus on Mar 11, 2010 7:45 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Definitely.

Just meant that the fact they were still recording it manually up until a few years ago was silly. As is the fact that they still use a relatively tiny sample size when they could be utilizing hardware that’s now in almost every household.

by Chris Nelson on Mar 11, 2010 8:03 PM EST up reply actions

in many ways it’s easier to get a small sample to be accurate than it is to get a large sample to be accurate.

and even if that cable box in your home can track what you personally are watching, do you want to be part of that program? most people like their privacy.

I realize some people would refuse it on GP, but honestly, if letting the cable company/networks/whomever know what I’m watching meant that the shows I like would continue to be made, I’d have no problem with it at all.

people DONT wanna pay for ppvs though and thy find ways around it, bars are getting more and more crowded for the ufc shows i show up an hour early to try to get a seat otherwise ur standing the whole time, and illegal streaming is as popular as ever

the ufc had a huge influx of fans after ufc 100 who started buying ppvs then realized wait we dont need to do this anymore there are ways to watch it for free and save the 55$

and the hardcores who have been buying every single one are sick of having to buy ppvs every 3 weeks since the ufc has had so many more shows so theyre watching them through other means as well

i bet if u could count the amount of ppl who watched ufc 110 illegal, legally and at bars the numbers would be huge and consistent with the ppv buys the ufc expects

The good ratings for this don’t make the weak ratings for WEC 47 and UFC 110 go away.
The issue is with trends. i’m excited to see this show get such good ratings. Perhaps UFC 111 will do banner numbers on PPV. I think it would have done more if they hadn’t been stomping on their product and serving up so many weak PPV events recently.

It’s so WWE-esque. Plus Hardy needs a place to train.

And Rogans “Who can stop that man” -soundbite is from Silva vs Franklin II.

As far as UFC buys goes, has anyone looked at seasonal rates? Aside from the weak string of cards of late, you also have to consider that most sports fans are going to be dedicating a lot more party time to football and holidays from the November to February. For most dudes, UFC ppv’s probably get put on the back burner.

Weak string of cards combine with seasonal downturn and we got some really bad numbers that immediately turn around once a card with a star isn’t competing with football.

Great point

Do they choose the free game on TV or the PPV?

by asa on Mar 11, 2010 10:25 PM EST up reply actions

my group

makes a whole day of college football saturdays + UFC. The best weekends are UFC shows during the fall. Makes for very long days (and terrible Sundays) but in Texas you don’t chose another sport over football, you find a way to make the other one fit.

except

that the New Year’s Eve and Superbowl Saturday cards have traditionally been 2 of the biggest cards of the year.

what's cool to think about....

is that the next string of cards will tell us who the real draws are in the ufc.

i really thought that 110 would draw well with wanderlei and nogueira on the card, but apparently i was wrong.

what is interesting to see are the numbers for prime time which seem to indicate the gsp is the new poster boy for the ufc.

while both bj and anderson are beloved by hard-core fans, it seems that gsp transcends traditional fight fan boundaries. guys love him for his skills and girls love him because he has a great body, and is good looking enough. this translates to some of the highest buy-rates for the ufc.

ufc 111 seems poised to sell well, but how will the cards after it do?

by funkywanderer on Mar 11, 2010 11:30 PM EST reply actions

I read some where that the ufc was in trouble. Its not rocket it science…the injury bug had a trickle down effect and stole a lot of momentum. I said it before and i say it again peeps worry about ppv buys to much. Its the MMA community inferiority complex. Always crying out for main stream acceptance and always claiming the sky is falling. I give bloody elbow credit thought…it takes a lot of sand to have a multi part story about how zuffa is hurting and on the same day put this post up.

For some reason the rec button isn’t working, but well said.

I wish they’d stop crying about lack of coverage on ESPN and wondering about whether or not this incident or this fighters’ behavior will affect MMA’s mainstream acceptance. It feels so fruitless. But I guess you have to come up with a couple of stories every day so there you go. I just come in every so often and add a couple of whimsical comments a day.

The voiceover really sounds like Henry Rollins. Is it him or just someone who wants to sound like hardest man on earth?

by Sventsh on Mar 12, 2010 4:22 AM EST reply actions

Oh, it really is Rollins. Awsome. My love for Rollins is unhealthy. His music is rather dull, but who cares.

Met him two months ago. Nice guy; very awkward around people.

If you were to believe what he says in his ‘spoken work’ he is certainly very awkward around people. And not hesitant to do some work. Now, it’s hard to know what is image and what is truth.

Seems that with him, there’s very little sizzle that isn’t coming from the steak.

you should buy

Black Flag “Damaged” nothing dull about that and it should be clear in about 0:30 of the first song why people still care about Rollins 30 years after his best work.

I also, amazingly, loved some of his later work. “Get Some, Go Again” was a really good album that nobody heard.

I am a huge Rollins fan, I just feel that his music hasn’t aged too well. But I promise to givegive the mentioned album a new chance.

“It is no surprise to me that hardly anyone tells the truth about how they feel. The smart ones keep themselves to themselves for good reason. Why would you want to tell anyone anything that’s dear to you? Even when you like them and want nothing more than to be closer than close to them? It’s so painful to be next to someone you feel strongly about and know you can’t say the things you want to.”

If a God (pick any) wanted to do the Dana-thing (“So you want to be an ultimate fighter”) to free flying souls thinking about getting a life (literally) she (or he) would make them listen to Henry Rollins collected works and then finish with “So you want to have a life?”

No one would apply.

oh I think his best stuff with Black Flag is right up there

with the best punk rock ever recorded.
And the My War and Slip It In albums are solid too — and Live 84 — if you like it dirty and slow and mean.

It’s pioneer but I don’t know about it’s staying power. X, now there’s a band that is right up there with the best punk rock ever recorded. Rollins was great, but he relied way too much on his “hey, I’m an angry mean pissed off guy (and now I make lots of money from it)” schtick.

I loved “DO it” though.

GSP was different

Was it me or did GSP seem to be taking a harder tone when being interviewed for the Primetime? Usually he’s to gracious and nice. Now he has more of a stone cold killer look and wants to destroy Hardy.

This ppv will do monster numbers.

by Reciprocity on Mar 12, 2010 9:35 AM EST reply actions

I thought so as well. When opponents trash talk GSP, it hasn’t turned out well for them. Hardy is playing the wrong game here, and it appears GSP is using Hardy’s words as more motivation.

by Hardcharger on Mar 12, 2010 10:09 AM EST up reply actions

yeah, he didn’t smile much at all, except when he was in the bar. He almost looked pissed off when talking about Hardy… I really really feel sorry for Hardy if that is the case.

by Din71 on Mar 12, 2010 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed, but I didn’t really see it as pissed off, just very serious and focused. This is not good news for Dan ’Ardy.

by ufc4 on Mar 12, 2010 6:59 PM EST up reply actions

Watching GSP’s training compared to Hardy’s training, oh man, this is going to be a complete slaughter.

I didn’t really get a lot of trash talk from Hardy. I mean sure he did say the typical “Yeah I’m going to clean his clock and enjoy doing it” but he certainly hasn’t even come close to what BJ Penn did. But yeah, GSP did look deadly serious. The dude is on a mission man. That leap over that bar was pretty much ridiculously insane. Training that guy must be like a constant orgasm for his trainers.
