I hope they shoot some video
The video from one of the previous tryouts was pretty interesting to watch.
Damn. Dana just tweeted that you need to be a REAL LW or LHW meaning you need to walk around at 225-230 for LHW and 165-170 for LW.
I like what they’re going for but I hope it doesn’t turn into 2 guys not being able to make weight for their first fight again.
this is a great idea though
It helps stop TUF winners then dropping classes. Have your TUF winner be an actual LHW or LW and not a MW or FW.

Kinda tough to enforce
If I’m walking around at 180 today, I can probably manage to be walking around at 210 or so by April 1. Might not be pretty, but doable.

never mind
I just realize the stupidity of what I just said. They could just look at what weights the fighters fought at previously.

Great...
The two most stacked divisions in the UFC. Just what we need, more gatekeepers (at best).
Yeah, cause Forrest Griffin, Diego Sanchez, Kenny Florian, Josh Koscheck, Rashad Evans, Joe Stevenson, Travis Lutter, Matt Serra, and Patrick Cote have never done anything, right?
(I mean, other than either winning or fighting for a title.)

How long ago were those guys on TUF?
The talent pool is drying up…..
Danzig, Efrain, Amir, Dollaway, Nover, Wilks, even Bisping are (at best) gatekeepers.
Besides Bader, nobody from the last few TUF’s have done much.
and....
I mentioned specifically LW, and LHW….
Most of the guys you mentioned were not in those divisions.
They’re from the first few seasons because someone who wins TUF is an entry-level fighter in the UFC. It took most of them (aside from the “comeback” winners) a couple of years to earn their title shots. Of course the newer winners haven’t gone anywhere yet. Some of them may not; Grove is likely to always be a mid-tier fighter. But then again, not every 1st overall draft pick in the NFL or NHL pans out. Doesn’t mean that every 1st overall pick should be labeled a “gatekeeper at best”.
And the UFC, for that reason, is always looking down the road. LHW is NOT stacked at the moment, certainly not as much as it was a couple of years ago when it was considered the “murderer’s row” of MMA. So if the LHW division is losing some luster, it makes sense to start developing the talent for it now. Same at lightweight.
You don’t really seem to understand what TUF is: a brilliant way to make money off of scouting and developing upcoming fighters. It’s the sort of thing that pro-sports teams pay millions to, that colleges and universities get rich off of exploiting. The UFC, for lack of a unified feeder system, has just taken over both sides of the equation. They pay out money to find and evaluate the talent, and also make huge bucks off of showing their scouting and evaluation process on television.

Yea Tuf winners simply will have to always drop a class. Dana how can you ask someone to cut 20 lbs every freaking week. Thats just stupid.
TUF 1 and TUF8
Had true 205 (minus Mike Swick and Tom Lawlor,). They didn’t have a problem.

Really? Didn’t know that. Well isn’t Tom Lawlor a 85er now though?
It’s quite hard on a person to have to cut that much weight for a long period of time.
It’s unreasonable for Dana to ask that of them. FIghting so dehydrated can really mess your skills and cardio up. I guess Dana wants to find real warriors or something like that.
1...please click reply under my comment...it makes this easier to follow
2. It’s not that unreasonable. They shouldn’t be binge drinking or eatting shitty food while in the house. If they can’t act professionally then they shouldn’t be in the UFC. There no reason to balloon up to 230 after each fight, that shows lack of discipline. The guys in both those seasons had no problems minus Gabe Rudiger who decided to eat a buncha cake and ice cream and didn’t train, and Bobby Southworth who didn’t come in inshape but made weight for his two fights. Again it’s a good way to find out who has the discipline and drive to want to act professionally and who just wants camera time.

But
If a guy that normally walks around 225 or 230 for his whole carrer is expected to cut/manage his weight for 7 weeks isen’t that putting his health at risk? Or is he not really want it that bad?

You aren't cutting 20 pounds of water when you make weight
You are cutting 10-12 pounds. So if they balloon back up to 230 after each fight, yes, to me that would show a lack of discipline. the booze in the house is for ratings and to see if you can act professionally.

I dunno I never have cut weight but from what I see and hear 20 lbs is an awful lot. However wrestlers are supposed to cut weight for a whole season.
Either way I would argue that MMA fighters likely cut more weight at one time then wrestlers. It’s hard on the body. You may have some matches go in the other direction due to the weight cut.
Just because your in shape doesn’t mean you cut 20 lbs of weight. Jesus if the guy was out of shape he would have no chance being that heavy.
To me it’s asking a lot. I know why their doing it but they should bring in WW for LW MW for WW and so on. We will see how this turns out though.

Surely if they’re doing LWs it wouldn’t matter how big the fighters are, there’s no way in hell they would win the show and drop to 145
That would be unprecedented. Perhaps a huge boost to WEC though? Leonard Garcia going down was huge. He had a great fight with Roger but he wasn’t ranked highly or anything. WEC will make the lesser know less skilled 155ers into stars.
Either way though 145 is a friggen shark tank. Don’t think your getting a break going down there.
yes i know that , i mean limit as in what age are u too old to try out.
which it doesnt say in the article.
