I think it looks fine, but it looks nowhere near as good as those early renders of Fedor & Brett Rogers. Those looked amazing. They obviously pulled a fast one with those.
Penny Arcade calls them "bullshots"
ie. screenshots that aren’t an accurate representation.
I was always pretty skeptical that’s what the game actually looked like, and now I know!
Get rid of the ramp!
it's just you
i think it looks better than the undisputed game and i’m expecting much better gameplay and depth
Looks great, can’t wait.

Low-res pictures on high es games never look that great, but it sure looks like it’s lacking contrast, maybe the lights.

I'll answer seriously
But some comments are really retarded,
It looks like it came out in 2005
This is 2005

But let’s get back to our EA sports MMA.
The modeling is good, the textures are better than in undisputed (less cartoonish), but the lightings aren’t there yet, so it looks like this. Some guys aren’t just used to look kinda bland right now.
We can’t do anything about the roaster though, but since I can’t play GSP in undisputed cause that’s cheating, I don’t give a fuck who I play with, as long as he got good technique. I’ll play the game with the best gameplay, not the UFC one just because he got BROCKLESNAR in it.
"You hit too hard, too hard, too hard..."
So what exactly are you trying to say pitbull?

I'll rec this cause it's funny
But he may be partially right. I do think that the character models show lack of texture. They did do a good job at building Monson to look like Monson, but there just does look like a change in depth. The models look pretty flat. As pointed out below, they also need to fix the legs because it looks like they only focused on the torso and above. I’ll hold judgement of the actual game once real gameplay footage is released and not still shots.

It really depends on what EA does though
Fight Night Round 3 was great. Fight Night Round 4 was not. THQ has the advantage of Brand (UFC) and a year to tweak things…EA needs to come right out the box with an amazing game or they won’t invest in MMA Round 2.

FNR4 is actually quite underrated. I just picked it up, hated it at first, but now that I’ve been playing it a bit I can appreciate why they made some of the changes they made. The fighting looks more authentic, and there are many more opportunities to fight in the style that you want to (for example, it was much harder to get inside and stay there in FNR3).

I really don't have the slightest idea what makes R4 "not" great.
I enjoyed the shit out of it immediately, best combat sport game I’ve ever played.
it wasn't easy for people to just drop into
people don’t like using the sticks, they want button configs
when the game first came out it wouldn’t let you change that

Agreed
I never played Fight Night as a living boxer. The career mode and fight mechanics are where it’s going to succeed or fail.

I think a fighting game with good mechanics/gameplay
Can do a lot better without marquee fighters, than a pro football game without the NFL license. I realize that branding is important, but it might not be as much of a dealbreaker with a fighting game.

I really don’t think that’s true. Do any generic pro wrestling games do well? What about random ass generic fighting games? Almost all the successful Street Fighter/Tekken style games are the one’s with famous characters.
This will probably be a good game, but for people to think that EA and gameplay are going to make this bigger than undisputed are just kidding themselves.
those characters got famous a long time ago, when they were the only option.
The only “new” fighting games working now are either sequels, or when Smash Brothers or Marvel vs Capcom started (also, not really new) but they both took existing characters.
To penetrate into the video game world it needs to be a perfect game.
To penetrate into the sports world they need to have the known players.
People like a good fighting game
Regardless of the brand, make a good fighting game and people will buy it

You’re missing his point. Generic games for the big leagues don’t work, because we all have our favourite teams. Fighting games are a little different in that it’s the game itself that is a little more important. I’ve been hoping that EA MMA would use Fight Night’s revolutionary controls and now that they are I’m more excited than ever about this game. I won’t be buying Undisputed 2010, but I will be buying EA MMA. This game is going to do well.

Well the character models do look pretty good, not sure if it’s because they have a smaller pool to pull from (so they can spend more time on that pool).
Some of the lighting looks a bit whack (over lit) but in general it looks really good.
Curious how it plays though, it can be pretty as hell but if it’s not fun or realistic then it won’t matter how it looks.
Agreed on the lighting.
It looks washed out our something. On another note though, I wonder how fighting in the ring will work. Didn’t know that was gonna be in there.

i’m curious how many people will purchase both. @ $60/game, i’ll only be getting one, and if the reviews aren’t stellar for the new Undisputed, I’ll probably stick with 2009’s version.

Mark me down for both. The only reason I will buy the EA title is I heard it’s based on the FNR3 engine and to this day FNR3 is still my favorite fighting game.
From now on whatever event I am planning will be know as the ‘Bas Rutten Invitational ____’
I’m pretty sure it’s based on the FNR3 engine. Granted I could be wrong, but I remember hearing they were using 3 and thinking that it was odd, but favorable.
From now on whatever event I am planning will be know as the ‘Bas Rutten Invitational ____’
I think they’ll use 4 only because it will allow them to incorporate more strikes and defensive maneuvers. The only thing missing in 4 is punch feedback through the controller… often it feels like you’re just punching air with most of your punches.

Meh.
The fighters look floaty and fake. That Nate Diaz stiff arm punch looks awful and nothing like his piddy-pat style. Entrances look cool, but that pre-rendered.
The one thing that is pretty awesome is the various rings and locales for the fights (including Brazil?). UFC Undisputed doesn’t have nearly as much background variety.

Anyone heard a release date on this… I know Undisputed is set for May 25th.
From now on whatever event I am planning will be know as the ‘Bas Rutten Invitational ____’
I could have sworn I read somewhere that the release has been pushed back again, into early 2011. If so, they are coming very, very close to being in competition with the 3rd iteration of the THQ game.
not to mention a possibly non-existent strikeforce (or a strikeforce on the verge of destruction that gets bought out by UFC… think about it)
I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08
Problems facing the game
1. Release date keeps getting pushed back. It’s hard to generate interest when you don’t have a release date.
2. Lack of known fighters. Couture is the most known fighter, people do buy based on roster/branding.
3. Your key brand (Strikeforce) may not exist if you continue to push the release back.
4. By continuing to push the release back, you give THQ another year to fix more problems and build a better game. You also allow for the UFC to stronger video game brand.
twitter.com/thisredengine
by Matthew Roth on Mar 10, 2010 11:05 AM EST up reply actions
i think alot of that can be negated, here's my take
1. the UFC date was pushed back for a long time, and interest never had a problem being generated. people got frustrated, but that didn’t stop anyone from buying it.
2. a benefit of the date being pushed back is Strikeforce has (potentially) many opportunities to be on CBS and create new fan favorites.
3. Strikeforce very well may not exist. given the track record of the money Fedor requires in exchange for eye balls he draws, has helped take down many promotions. Also, when you draw the UFC attacking you, you better have deep pockets, because the UFC certainly does and will take advantage of that and try to kill you.
4. i see a problem with 3 UFC games in 3 years. it’s not football where roster changes occur almost every week, and there are 10 new standout players who need updated skills in the game and your favorite college just had an amazing senior class just move on to the nfl. that has helped Madden make a new successful game every year. with the UFC, there just aren’t that many new fighters people HAVE to play with. year 3 will probably be a down year for the game.
I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08
agred on the not needing a new game every year.
what would be awesome would be to do a new game every 2, maybe 3 years (might be stretching it), but do downloadable fighter rating updates every few months and add fighters that need to be added. to play online, you would just have to make sure you have the latest updates loaded
Goldie: "Michael Jordan-esque in his grappling skills is Travis Lutter."
Rogan: "No, no he's not. No."
Late 2010/early 2011 = a death sentence for this game.
Along with the reasons already stated, your talking about giving the superior license and brand a two year running start! No way EA will be able to catch up pimping a game with few if any marketable stars. The game play would have to be revolutionary and if these screen caps are any indication its already game over.
From now on whatever event I am planning will be know as the ‘Bas Rutten Invitational ____’
Even if
—the UFC is the superior license, what will turn heads for MMA fans, not UFC fans, will be the fluidity of the strikes. If punching, kicking and grappling is so fluid that it mimics real life situations then regardless of the brand, fans will flock to the better game.
Atleast I would. Looking at UFC Undisputed 2010…..it looks exactly like UFC Undisputed 2009, why? Yukes Osaka, that’s why. They are known for creating and developing the WWE titles. If anyone on this board has experience with WWE gaming, you would understand that the in-game visuals look the same every year, with the exception of a sweat mod added to each grappler.
From the looks of EA’s “MMA”, it could be the one to really give UFC ’10 a run because when it come to sports titles — Electronic Arts is the king. All the way from Knockout Kings to Fight Night Round 4. They are simply untouchable. Granted that EA has the bigger budget and will undoubtedly have the programmers and developers to properly string together a intricate grappling system that makes the “tilt and hold the thumb stick right to counter-UFC ground fighting system” obsolete.

there's no question
UFC is the superior license. MMA fans will make up a very small % of people that will buy either of these games so even if the gameplay is better in the EA game it won’t matter because every tom, dick & harry will buy undisputed because it has UFC on the cover. not to mention undisputed has a huge running start.
"Live fast, die."
Seems like you all are forgetting that this is nowhere near the finished product. These are screen shots from somewhere before alpha testing. Meaning that right now there is still at least 2 more versions of the game before they release it and a lot more work to be done and I wouldn’t be surprised if some of that work is graphics oriented.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to this game and I’m glad that the release dates for UFC 2010 and this are so far apart so I’ll be able to give each one my undivided attention.

Yeah...
I’m finding the complaints over the lack of polish to be pretty lame given the stage it’s at. Then again I’m just annoyed that like with promotions people feel they need to “pick a side” in the Undisputed/EA MMA debate. As I said earlier…I hope they’re both good games, I hope they both help the sport, I hope they push each other to make better games..etc

It really depends on final product though
THQ does have the advantage with the UFC brand and a year to fix all the issues that fans had. If EA goes to market with anything but a stellar game then you won’t see MMA round 2. I hope that both do well but secretly hope that EA fails just because of the way they did business with the 2ksports guys.

I hate
EA with a fiery passion… but that doesn’t mean i won’t play their games if they are good. It’s kinda like Wal-Mart. I hate it, but damn, how can you NOT shop there?
I've never been inside a wal-mart
but i get your point. the only games that I really like that they produce are FIFA and Madden.
This is what I hope happens. THQ wins this MMA war. EA is forced to buy out the UFC license for more than it is worth because the UFC brand is stronger than the MMA brand. They keep the coding and just improve it. THQ rebounded really well and now has games in the pipeline that put them ahead of most studios.

You true.
It’s basically a necessary evil. Unless you have a small team of the world’s best coders you kind of have to have companies like EA who on the corporate side can’t manage for shit but have enough money to pull together really great teams that have the funding to make a great game. I love companies like THQ who try to stay true to their core values and just want to make a good game instead of targeting market points. Remember old school THQ WCW vs NWO REVENGE! gah why can’t any new wrestling match the fun factor of that game. I want to have that same feeling with Undisputed 2010, just with a more technical mma feel instead of the fake chair to the face…. well i guess nothing wrong with a hardcore MMA table match.
you find it lame that people are unimpressed by the graphics? they released shots of the game, what are people supposed to say? “it’s coming along nicely”? all we can do is comment on what we see, and what we see looks graphically poor.
I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08
Can you at least recognize the fact that it’s not coming out for at least another nine months? They didn’t just release screen shots, they also told us where they were in the production schedule and if you watched the video they told us that these screen shots are being released a bit early.
So yes, those of us that don’t skip over the words to look at the pictures should be saying that it is coming along nicely. Because it is.

If the game isn’t ready to show, why are they showing it? It does no good to show off a game that looks amateur-ish and then just hope people think it’s an early build (they won’t). This game still hasn’t offered up any gameplay details, either….
It really just seems like a “me-too” attempt to cash in, and nothing I’ve seen so far has made it look anything but half assed. I’d like to see a real attempt at an entry into the market, but I’m getting the feeling this game is going to be shovelware.
If anything
It will be a Joe Montana Sportstalk Football ‘94 to Madden transformation for these games. i.e. the 2k sports series vs EA’s sports series.
Both Undisputed and EA’s MMA are in the spectrum of Sportstalk Football and will eventually make that leap to unpresdented levels, giving them that Madden-esque appeal.

To expect DLC from THQ last year
would have been a terrible idea. It was on the verge of closing its doors until the success of Undisputed. The UFC literally saved THQ by selling over 3.5million copies. It has since bounced back and is now developing next gen games like L.A. Noir which will blow your mind.

I’ll give them this, the character models look very accurate.
One of the things that really bugged me about UFC Undisputed is that some of the fighters clearly didn’t get as much attention paid to them and their models looked kind of…odd. Marcus Davis and Tyson Griffin immediately spring to mind. Houston Alexander just looked bizarre.

Undisputed '09 was a rushed product
—why you ask?
The rumor is that UFC ‘09 was supposed to be released until around the time this UFC ’10 was supposed to be released — meaning this month. So instead of completely adding what they added this time around: Cage rushes, south paw, stringing together better submissions off of transitions and counter-traps. Hell, they couldn’t even add Clay Guida because of his hair nor make southpaws due to clipping issues.
So it’s apparent that Dana didn’t want the whole shabang so he cut it into parts, slowly adding new techniques and opportunities to each year. You can consider UFC ’09 the Alpha, UFC ’10 the Beta and hopefully ’11 or ’12 will be greater. Yukes Osaka should learn to tune the Unreal Engine for the game.

But the game looks like garbage. Graphics are like N64.
I agree
Regardless of how it looks in these stages, EA is merely telling you what you can look for when the game finally releases. I’m sure they are adding the fine tweaks and giving you great options to choose from. EA isn’t really known to create crap and sell it to you.
Unless you consider every Madden after ’08, crap.

Let it have you start up your own company with a set budget and let you work your way up to having the best fighters, cards, and fan base.
I could see that
Like when 2K sports created the “MLB 2K Sports: Front Office” where you could be the general managed. I think a UFC game with a proposed premise where you could be like Dana White, set-up fights, check out locations, sign fighters, have a budget, et cetera.

What about being a coach and managing your gym?
That’s what I think I’d rather do. Recruit, train, manage/promote, corner. That almost sounds like it could be a game by itself.
Some of you are being way too harsh..
These images don’t look that good, but this might be from an earlier build of the game. Games can come a LONG way in a matter of months and this one has a considerable amount of development time left before release.
