Josh Gross blames trainer Shawn Tompkins:

"Coleman made Couture’s night easy when, at the advice of his trainer Shawn Tompkins and the despite the fact it has never been his path to victory, he chose to stand and trade."

"...Shortly into the bout, Coleman carried the attitude of a confused athlete, one who was thinking instead of fighting."

"Between the first and second round, Coleman looked up at Tompkins as the Canadian offered instructions on how to keep distance and how to fire off combinations. I’m fairly certain he would have loved if Tompkins told him to run out there and take a shot on a double-leg. If you’re going to go out, go out at what you do best."

I thought it was strange that Coleman was boxing with Couture. Seemed like the dumbest thing in the world.

You have to be the man... you have to be very, like, alpha male with her. You know? Decide what you do and everything. So, show her who's the boss, you know? - GSP

You never know, but I’d chalk this up to Gross not knowing the whole story. And in any case, Coleman endorsed the plan by following it; it’s not like he has to follow his trainers orders. Sometimes the best plan you’ve got isn’t a very good plan. Which is why he was at +375.

I sort of agree with this sentiment. Coleman’s standup looked wooden as hell and every time Couture went forward he snapped Coleman’s head back with every punch. He went 3 rounds taking down Bonnar repeatedly so I see no reason for Tompkins to tell him to stand with Randy.

The fight just looked sad for Coleman. If had tried to outwrestle Randy and got beat it would have been fair enough, but to completely ignore his only strength was a crazy strategy

A friend of mine and I were commenting on this, but it seems like Shawn Tompkins as a trainer tends to focus his guys too much on striking. He takes guys who aren’t good strikers, convinces them they ARE good strikers and they then ignore what they ARE good at. It happened with Horodecki too.

Ironic, considering that after UFC 98 Tompkins was one of the first to say that the plan for any of his fighters taking on Machida would be to wrestle and take him down, not try to stand and bang. (Train with karateka to understand the timing, as Shogun ended up doing, but no, he never meant a win on the feet.)

Can’t see why that changed with Horodecki and Coleman.

SOMEBODY fucked up.

Probably enough blame to go around for Tompkins and Coleman.

It seemed like Tompkins thought he could out think his old boss. Why Colemen went along with it is beyond me

Me and my wife both commented on this..

Tompkins semed to not really give the right advice. Coleman should have been shooting for the takedown from the opening bell.

I’ve never liked Shawn Tompkins. He looks, and acts very shady.

I see this mistake a lot. I’m sure they were thinking, try to catch Randy’s weakened chin early and then drag it into a wrestling match. It didn’t work and then it was too late. It doesn’t mean the strategy was to kickbox for 15 minutes, it means he never got past the first phase because he got his ass kicked.

by Michael Rome on Feb 8, 2010 12:42 PM EST reply actions

I don’t know. He talked to me an awful lot about how his standup was better than Randy’s. I think that if you are going to Tompkins for anything other than “Tompkins style” strategy and training, you are in the wrong place.

by Jonathan Snowden on Feb 8, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe I need to watch the fight again but...

All I saw was Coleman throwing some stiff jabs and glancing down for that double-leg… Randy just kept excellent distance to box and prevent any big shot from Coleman.. Tompkins just underestimated the amount of damage that Randy could do

Is Shawn Tompkins the most overhyped trainer in MMA?

Answer= Yes

He also led Chris Horodecki straight into child abuse!!

by SidHartman on Feb 8, 2010 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

Couture is no Stephen Bonnar on the ground. I think even IF Coleman had managed to take down Randy, he would have been reversed quite easily and then it’s all Randy’s game. In their wrestling match way back, Coleman only won by one point and the athleticism and skill difference is huge. At least standing he had a chance given Randy’s chin which is not made of granite by any means. I think by the time Mark started looking for the shot, he was already too rattled.

Also, (and I can’t believe I’m saying this) is it just me or does anyone else think Coleman probably would have beat Rolles Gracie tonight?!

by HarmlessNinja on Feb 8, 2010 1:23 PM EST reply actions

He would have destroyed Gracie

Gross tweets:

For the people suggesting I’m blaming Shawn Tompkins 4 Coleman losing, I’m not. My point was their strategy only made it easier for Couture.
I don’t think Coleman had much of a chance even if he wrestled, but wrestling would have given him a look at the fight, I think.

Isnt Tompkins more known as a Striking Coach moreso then an actual Head Trainer/Instructor due to his Muay Thai an Kickboxing background, or at least thats what most indivudual Fighters like Cokeman an Belfort goto/went to for? Like how Greg Jackson an Firas Zahabi are known for being well-rounded coaches? I know he (Tompkins) has his own team an such but always thought he mainly taught Strkiing, hence his fighters mostly being strikers an not BJJ or Wrestling Guys??? Would probably explain what Gross is trying to say or convey? Either way, if Coleman’s plan was just to stand an Bang, definetly dumb on everyones part involved :/ Sh!tty way for The Hammer to go out. Guess theres always that match with Shammy @ the Gladiators Challenge.

Hehe after reading more of his Article I like how he thinks Couture isnt going to go away “quietly” and can Maybe, just maybe take on, an defeat Jon Jones and/or Lil Nog, you know, the Twin Brother who beat Couture before the Coleman fight..well actually its just an idea he has that we shouldnt dismiss either :P Funny Guy that Josh Gross. Im really surprised at the Praise Couture is getting/gets for beating up someone everyone is saying sucked horribly during their fight an is probably retired. Dont understand it, dude is 17-10 and guys like Rogan an Gross make it seem like he’s P4P king or something..never understood it, IMO Randy has been spoonfed the title shots and praise he’s gotten despite having a mediocre record…Ah well its MMA, as they say, Anything can Happen, and Probably will!

Thompkins knows that Randy is KO prone and slow

but he over estimated Coleman’s ability to exploit that.

Everyone knows Randy couldn’t trade punches with Chris Cyborg at this stage of the game.

Did he really say Randy could beat Nog or Jones? Because either of those fights would end in Randy Couture recieving a CT scan at the hospital while Jones/Nog is answering questions at the post fight presser.
