Nate, dude, you got run over.
Though if the match were 5 rounds, I’m certain Nate would have won.

That's wierd logic
Aside from a few subs being close, he got his ass beat non-stop. Sonnen showed no sign of slowing down, either.
Nate went from #1 contender, to gatekeeper, in 15 minutes. I almost think he would have done better against Hendo.

…gatekeeper????…really?

I mean...
He isn’t a contender, so…
He got his crack at the title, got steamrolled, lost to Leites (lol), put together some wins, and then lost to a guy that wasn’t even in the title picture.
I think upper level gate keeper is fair.

Marquardt-Sonnen was to determine the #1 contender
I think that very cleary put Sonnen in the title picture.
Upper level gate keeper is far from fair…try elite middleweight.
His loss to Leites was similar to Jon Jones’ loss to Hamill

Was thinking the same thing. Agreed.

LOL at losing to Leites? That loss was cmparable to Jones v Hammil. Fightfinder doesn’t tell the story.

The way I see it...
Chael is the #1 contender, because of who he faught Saturday night, no other reason. He had a recent loss to Maia, and beat Okami, which is tough, but doesn’t propel him to the top.
Factually, this fight was supposed to be Hendo vs. Nate for the title shot. Hendo was out of the picture, so they got the next best thing. Chael was a giant underdog, and noone expected him to win. I see it as more of a “keep busy” fight for Nate. He expected an immediate shot after the Maia knockout.
I’m sticking to my guns, if it wasn’t for beating the #1 guy in a match that was chanced together, nobody would have considered a contender yet.

I never really understood this kind of statement. It’s like people think Nate steamrolled through Leites and lost solely because of the point deductions. Yes, without the deductions, he wins a 29-28 decision IMO. But he got dropped by a punch, mounted twice, and even if the shot to the back of the head was a debatable point deduction, he should have lost a point for the attempted piledriver anyway. It was a pretty close fight that actually showed a lot of holes in Nate’s game.
Hamill had zero offense in the entire fight. To me, comparing those to fights doesn’t work at all.

nah I think hendo woulda done the same thing to him, hendo is tough to submit. diff would be I don’t think Hendo wouldve been busted open like chael.
I couldve seen Nate winning in a 5 rounder I dunno if chael wouldve been able to hold Nate down another 2 rounds, already at the end of the 3rd nate was turning things around.

Too bad it’s going to be a long time before Nate sees another 5 rounder huh?

sonnen has looked leaps and bounds better over his last 2 fights. nate was a huge opponent to show where sonnen is. he didn’t get beaten by a guy who should have had no business in the cage with him.
I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08
It’s even more impressive when you see how he performed in his previous stint in the UFC and in the WEC where he just barely beat a clearly messed up Filho. When Nate had him in that Guillotine, I thought for sure Nate had him, considering Sonnen’s history with submissions, but he got out of it. Great performance by Sonnen.

It was repeating in my head and I knew he wasn’t going to tap.

It was mentioned in the Jordan Breen show that styles really do make fights. I’m not taking anything away from Sonnen because he fought a great fight and does deserve to fight the winner of Anderson vs Belfort. From a stylistic standpoint, Sonnen was Marquardt’s poison in that he could put Marquardt on his back, and Marquardt just isn’t strong off his back. Stylistically, this same strategy probably wouldn’t work on someone like Demian Maia or Jacare, or someone with great wrestling like Hendo. It also didn’t help that Marquardt was recklessly pushing forward with his strikes making getting the takedown from Sonnen that much easier. Regardless, Sonnen looked great, and Marquardt knows that he has some things to improve upon.
Sonnen was better at one thing, and he did this one thing all 3 rounds, that’s how you win a fight. I can’t believe he couldn’t stop one takedown though, I was pretty disappointed, his wrestling wasn’t there I’m sure he’s better than that.
"You hit too hard, too hard, too hard..."
Nate’s BJJ is like Diego’s. Great top game but not very strong off the bottom. And you can’t really say he’s overrated. He fought a 2x NCAA D1 champ and an Olympic alternate who has the best wrestling in the division (Jake Rosholt may have been up there, but he’s freestyle which isn’t as good for MMA). Everyone will get out wrestled by Chael.

gameplan?
There was zero mystery here as to what Sonnen was going to do. You’d think that Yoda would have come up with a plan against takedowns.
You can’t game plan for a 2x D1 champ. You can train sprawls all you want, you’re getting taken down.

Sonnen showed great MMA wrestling, but he was actually not a 2x NCAA champ. He was an AA at Oregon 1 season, but his best finish was around 8th .
Sorry, from his wikipedia page
He was an NCAA All-American wrestler, two-time University National Champion in Greco Roman, and a US Olympic team alternate.

I understand what his wiki page says, but I was clarifying that Sonnen was not an NCAA wrestling champ like Lesnar, Koscheck, Hendricks, Rosholt, etc, were. He was a 1x All American, so his wrestling was very good at the NCAA level.
i mean when you know EXACTLY what’s coming, you can use footwork, spacing, etc. Or do a lot of work in your camp on how to stand up after getting taken down, or on the bottom game.

Like another famous upset...
Nate’s one of my favorite fighters, one of the few who will make me yell at the TV as if my encouragement will make a difference. But last night, he beat himself mentally. It reminds me of when Randy applied his wrestling acumen to smother and dominate Vitor, way back when.
I thought Nate started out slow despite that first choke, but when he got out of the first takedown by literally leg pressing Sonnen halfway across the cage, then almost immediately got taken back down, I knew things were going to be ugly. Between Sonnen’s obvious wrestling and GnP skills and Nates mental nap, it was game over, but good lord that almost last second guillotine had me yelling.
Did Sonnen break his thumb? I remember he was shaking out and looking at his left thumb after the 1st.
Also when sonnen looked down at it in between rounds, lindland asked if he felt anything from it.
