UFC 109 Post-Fight Interviews
Dana White thinks Randy Couture is top 5 in the world, and that this could be Mark Coleman's last fight:
Mark Coleman was very motivated for this fight. Most important fight of his life... He trained hard for this thing. Time is a b*tch man. It takes a toll on all of us. I think we probably have seen the last time that Mark Coleman fights.
Chael Sonnen wants to face Anderson Silva because it's the easier route to the title:
I would prefer Anderson won, cause I would prefer to fight him over Vitor. I think Vitor is the better fighter...
Anderson Silva will be on tears before it's all over. The guy is no more real than the Lochness Monster. The guys in the back know who's the tough guy... As far as him being the bully on the playground, his 15 minutes are up.

Well, Okami chose to go out there, which at the time seemed like a weird thing, but now I think it makes a lot more sense and was probably beneficial for both fighters. I was going to say “can you imagine a grinder between those two guys?” then I realized of course you can, we’ve all seen it. But I think we need to look for Okami’s grinding to get… better? worse? I guess it’s all a question of perspective.

Which BE staffer called it on the Chael shit talking now?
I seriously hope he gets to face Anderson just so I can see the bewildered look on his face when they wake him up after the fight.
Chael has a very good chance to beat Anderson.

No one has a very good chance to beat Anderson. Some people have a chance. But not a good chance.

Sonnen has a great chance to get out of the first round
but that’s about it.

Correct, sir
I’m psychic.
I see Anderson walking right through him, just like he does everyone else.
Sonnen has skills, but isn’t 1/50th of Anderson.

ha ha
I’m drinking kool-aid because Anderson is as close to unbeatable as we’ve ever seen?
Is this Chael I’m talking to??
by CaptainSpaulding on Feb 7, 2010 5:46 PM EST up reply actions
He
didn’t look “unbeatable” against Cote or Thales Leites… Very beatable looking to me. Especially with the wrestling skill set that Chael has. I am sure that you picked Nate by a landslide too didn’t you, although you prob won’t admit it since you are a “psychic”…
I'm not afraid to admit when I'm wrong
I thought Nate would win by UD vs. Sonnen. Sonnen outwrestled him, and pounded him.
Now let’s see him do that to the king.
And how beatable did Chael look getting subbed by Horn (twice), Babalu, Filho, Maia, Prangley and Forrest?? For God’s sake, Terry Martin beat him. He has looked bad against some less than average fighters.
Anderson has dominated every one of his fights in the UFC.
by CaptainSpaulding on Feb 7, 2010 6:04 PM EST up reply actions
He is
going to wrestle down and pound the “king” into a puddle of mud… That is, a big “IF” he gets by Vitor. LOOK, I can be a soothsayer too!
can we please
just stop feeding the silva-hater
I dont see Chael beating Anderson or Vitor. I think Vitors training with Randy will give him some pretty good take down defense.
And we all saw how Anderson handled Hendo.

Nope. I didnt think he had a chance in hell. But I was proven wrong. shrugs

If Chael is able to power his way into taking Silva down, he may succeed where Hendo failed and smother Silva to a decision.
If there is a benevolent god, he will not allow this to pass.

Besides the Henderson vs Silva fight, there are some other things that have to be looked into if Anderson fought Sonnen. For one, can Sonnen do what he did to Marquardt for five rounds? The other thing is that Anderson is good at utilizing distance in the standup whereas Marquardt was just pushing forward the whole time. Finally, Marquardt showed that he is not very strong off his back, and Anderson seems to have some tools off his back like triangle chokes and body triangles from the guard which controls posture. Anderson also has those really long legs which help BJJ guys off their back as well.
Anderson should also wear pink shorts and enter the cage to “Relax” by Frankie Goes To Hollywood or “My President is Black” by Young Jeezy.

That is brilliant!
Can’t wait to see Chael with those pink shorts between his legs. :-)

Awesome.
Chael is really starting to grow on me. He’s like a living political cartoon. He’s almost completely batshit crazy. Love it.
You have to be the man... you have to be very, like, alpha male with her. You know? Decide what you do and everything. So, show her who's the boss, you know? - GSP
Couple of thoughts:
*Wallid Ismail > Ed Soares
*DW is still interested in James Toney! Hope he gets him.
*Chael is hilarious, if Anderson wants hip hop and Chael says it’s going to be country music, you better believe they’ll play country!
I’m warming up to the fact of how interesting Chael is going to make the fight with Andy, he’s definitely going to let it loose in the days coming to the fight and is definitely going to hit a nerve with Andy, because Andy is the type of guy that will take things on a very personal level, and will unleash all his emotions on Chael on the date of the fight. This will just make the fight that much better.

I do not think for one second Chael really believes the things he says.
That being said I think this is coming very close to pro wrestling territory. I know that he is trying to make himself more interesting to the fans and judging by the comment levels jumping up so much on any posting related to him these last few weeks I suppose it is working. I guess if they call you boring in the cage you have to make up for it outside of it. I hope Anderson gets by Belfort (very likely) so that this fight can take place. Real heat between fighters interests me. This “fake” fighter bashing is just stupid but I guess it is doing what its supposed to do to me as well because I would love to see Silva destroy this tool now.
After you spend some time around fighters
you realize that, while they do try to hype a bit, it all comes from their personality. Diego looks like he puts on a ridiculous act, but he’s actually just that crazy. I think Sonnen might be delusional and insane enough to be authentic.

I agree
Chael is a little off, that’s what makes him so entertaining. And he has skills to hang around in title contention. Should be fun.
I posted in another thread that I’m not so sure Chael is great for the Republicans. I don’t think he has complete control over his mouth. But how great for us as fans.
I can’t wait for Chael to parlez le merde for 5 months then get smoked in two rounds.

Except for hockey and soccer and a whole lot of other things.
Oh wait, I forgot. If Americans aren’t the best at it, it’s not worth calling a “professional sport”. My bad.
yeah,
we suck at soccer (well, men’s soccer) and hoc… err… wait, when was the last time canada won a stanley cup?
I dunno… I’ve seen some pretty chunky Canadians. I live in Tampa, you guys all come down to Florida in the winter and swim in the gulf in Speedos and then drive 10 miles under the speed limit to the early bird special at Bob Evans.
But I’m guessing being fat in Canada is a good thing, I’d want the insulation in the icy tundra as well.
One of those things I don't want to know about other MMA fans...
…but have to ask anyway:
Did nobody else find Chael’s allusions to Anderson Silva and rap music or Anderson Silva and ‘sideways hat-wearing’ or ‘what would happen to Anderson in my neighborhood’ or Anderson’s ‘habla espanol’ mildly troubling?
I mean Jesus Christ, does the man have to fly the stars and bars (that’s the confederate flag) before people get uncomfortable?

I wasnt going to say anything about it…and Im not going to go as far as to call Chael a racist, but he’s def made some troubling remarks over the years. Every stupid comment taken independently isnt so bad, but when you put it all together the narrative sounds racist.

I'll call him a racist
He doesn’t get to dance up to the line and then complain about people taking his words out of context. I’m glad his next fight is guaranteed to be with someone who can put a fist through him.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
What?
racist thing has he actually said? I see more white ppl with their hat’s sideways and listening to hip hop. That is a strong statement to make without actual proof.
I think this coded language about how a guy like Anderson Silva would get “run out” of his lily white neighborhood in Oregon is entirely targeted at his race. Chael doesn’t seem to need “proof” before he goes out and slags people, so I don’t see why I should pay him that courtesy (except to avoid fighter bashing, which I’m getting dangerously close to doing).

Yes you are...
Calling someone an actual racist and somebody calling out somebody for speaking english in secret are to different things. He states he has conversations with Anderson in english. That is his proof. You have zero proof about him being a racist. He was making fun of the pink clothes that he wears with the neighborhood comment. Race is never mentioned.
It’s clear that you like the guy and that you’re predisposed to give him the benefit of the doubt. I don’t, so I’m not. As the original commenter said, and others added, his comments never go over the line into outright racism, but taken together they paint a picture of a guy who doesn’t like people who don’t look and sound like him.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
You seem
to be smart enough to know that all his talk has been aimed at getting attention to get a title fight… It is simple theatrics from a very smart fighter. Have you noticed how Anderson lately has acted like he is uninterested in fighting anybody in the division? Chael knows that to make Andersion WANT to fight him, he has to disrespect him. Please tell me that you understand all this…

Exactly
I like heels…some of them anyway. My favorite fighter right now is Paul Daley. But trash talk can take a whole lot of forms that aren’t racially tinged.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
Well...
There are many ways to hype a fight and racism or sexism is one way to do it. But there are many others.
Is Chael a racist? Of course he is! Probably more of the mild variety than the KKK variety, but “duh”. Is he talking in code? It’s so blatant it seems silly to call it “code”.
Maybe he’ll call Anderson “urban” soon or talk about how he was bred to be a great fighter or that he fights like an animal. :)
Is it all an act? Well, the QT has always been that Rush Limbaugh isn’t nearly as conservative as the character he plays on radio – some, but not that over the top. I suspect the same is true of Chael.
Still, it’s fun as hell to root against him and I will enjoy Silva pounding him senseless.

Rec'd for "bingo."
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
He comes across not as a racist to me. but as intolerant of anything different than he is. He’s using his crazy statements for publicity(which is working pretty well so far). To me he comes off more as self righteous than racist. I know in this day and age people are going to read his comments as racist, but i think that has more to do with the over sensitivity from the perspective of the reader. I really think he is just scared of and hates everything that isnt Chael Sonnen
Damn Thiago’s translator. Just translate dude, you dont have to add stuff he didnt say to hype up his next fight.
He was humble and respectful and the translator made him sound kinda cocky.
I hate the fact some translators, looks over at you Soares, have to insert their own jive in since they feel like they gotta be the ones to generate some heat.
"You never know, I don't know, you know?" - Nick Diaz
Plus
His English was pretty terrible for a translator. I felt like he wasn’t able to get across any of the points Thiago was trying to make (based solely on his own confused look and his stammering).
Blackout612- "Wuts teh UFC?"
Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
I've had extended conversations with him.
His english is just fine.

This post is BOOLSHEET!
Wallid is the fucking man.
CHEECKENS, BOOLSHEET, ONE MINUTE-A-HAFF

Walking the line between intelligence and ignorance since 1985
@deowade
I blog about stuff too.
what did he purposely translate wrong? Soares sugar coats everything, Wallid in the other hand just didn’t understand some of the questions and translated it wrong, but I don’t think he did that on purpose. The UFC should just hire a professional translator for foreign fighters, but Wallid can do no wrong in my eyes!
Pain is Temporary
Pride is Forever
If the UFC hired a translator, any inconsistencies would be chalked up the the UFC being tyrants, not letting their fighters speak their mind, or trying to do other evil things.
Translating live talk is never going to be perfect, I’d rather let the fighters pick someone to spin the questions and answers instead of having to deal with the whining that would come if zuffa did it.
There is no reason to think Zuffa would censor what fighters say (even me who usually jokes around how DW is evil and all). If there was a reason to think that, than most guys here would not believe the things they translate on the countdown shows, but I can’t say I ever read someone being doubtful of what is translated in those shows. Besides, if things were being translated wrong people would know because we would point that out just like we do with Ed Soares.
The problem with having guys like Ed is that he will usually not translate things on purpose for trying to make his fighters look better. The problem with guys like Wallid is that unfortunately his English is not fluent enough so he will unknowingly translate things wrong.
Zuffa can cut the middle man and present someone from Zuffa who is a professional translator (something neither Ed nor Wallid is). Professional translators have a very low margin of error.
Pain is Temporary
Pride is Forever
the same reason ed has to not translate things properly, the UFC has.
I’m not saying they would do it, but people would cry more about translation inconsistencies if the UFC did it than if the fighter’s personal translator did it.
that’s not a justified reason to not try it out though, just because Ed does it doesn’t necessarily mean the UFC would, look at Joe Rogan, sometimes he says nice things about fighters not in the UFC. He has a lot of freedom in that regard. Why are we to assume a translator wouldn’t? All I’m saying is that they should try it out, we’ll be here to set them straight if things are not being properly translated.
Pain is Temporary
Pride is Forever
Hate to triple post but isn’t the strategy Chael described to beat Vitor like exactly his gameplan in ALL of his fights, so how would Anderson be easier? And I don’t know about the things Chaels saying being vaguely racist, but I did think the hoe down thing was funny.
"You never know, I don't know, you know?" - Nick Diaz

I got a ton of laughs out of this. Sonnen is a tough fighter, but come on. And Couture top 5?? Haha, of what? People in the running for the next Space Cowboys movie?? LMFAO

I am actually interested in who Serra is going to fight next. He didn’t look too bad against Hughes, and he just destroyed Trigg. Also, Serra doesn’t look particularly slow or anything, so I actually wouldn’t mind seeing him fight someone decent next.
i wish diego were still free...
I think Matt beats him and/or Nate at 170… among others.

lol.
Diego Sanchez vs Matt Serra would be a lot of fun even though I would personally see Diego taking that one. I wonder how Serra would deal with Nate Diaz’s height and reach though, so stylistically, I can’t really seeing that matchup being too good for Serra unless it goes to the ground for most of the fight, then it would be pretty cool.
