Breaking Down IGN’s First Look of UFC 2010: Undisputed…
From The 3rd String Safety:
As May 25th draws closer, I’m getting more and more pumped for UFC 2010: Undisputed. After last year’s game was awesome, you can only assume that this year’s is going to be even better. IGN.com did a first look at the game this weekend, and I’ll be bringing you the MMA fans view of some of the news.
Let’s get started.
Moments ago, the company ran UFC Undisputed 2010 through its first public match – Mike Swick versus Paulo Thiago – and although the gameplay demo was extremely short, THQ promised and showcased some really good stuff. For starters and piggybacking off of my complaint, the static animations of 2009 are gone. When your fighters are in the prone position or mid-hold, they’re not just sitting there — they’re living and breathing. You’ll see your arm struggle against a hold as you try and break it, there are transitions between takedowns, and – thank the Lord – there are cage moves. This year, if you’re good enough, you’re going to be able to slam coverboy Brock Lesnar up against the chain link and wail on his ribcage.
This is a great thing. The game did have a “rock’em, sock’em robots” feel to it at times because most of animations were stiff. This was especially true in the ground game, as the opponent would stand still during transitions. Besides that, cage work was one of the biggest gripes of players last year. The fact that the fights took place in a cage, but you couldn’t interact with it was a bit ridiculous. Look for things like clinches, flurries against the cage and switching levels for takedowns to be included this year.
You can switch to the southpaw stance if you click in on the right joystick, the fight animations have been quadrupled, the clinch has been reanimated, the number of front submissions have been doubled, there’s a new targeting system, and there are individual submissions like B.J. Penn’s arm trap. Not enough octagon goodness? THQ has added karate, Greco-Roman wrestling, and Sambo fighting styles while doing away with archetypes for fighters – created fighters will now use individual movesets.
All good news once again. Fighters like Rich Franklin will feel more realistic due to the addition of the south paw stance. More of anything is never a bad thing, and more submissions and animations are a really good thing. The same goes for more fighting styles as the original six that were in the game simply weren’t enough. Since they did away with archetypes, I wonder how the new movesets will work. MMA is a sport where everyone knows how to do pretty much everything, just with varying levels of skills and success. Will my boxer not be able to throw muay thai knees? Will a wrestler not be able to use a triangle? Actually, that one kinda makes sense. Still, I’m curious of how that is going to work. Fighter specific animations are cool, but it made Anderson Silva a bitch to play with last year.
It did look sweet – the graphics are no doubt sharper than last year, as sweat clung to the fighters’ chests and blood spurted out as punches rained down on Thiago’s face – but that was about it. To drive home that TV presentation, the match ended with the fighters in the ring in post-fight outfits such as Swick’s “Dethrone Royalty Texas” shirt.
YYEEESSSSS. Call me a dork, but I think that the presentation is so important. Thinks like walkout shirts and banners for the fighters makes it feel more like an actual UFC. Besides, I already shot walking out in the Josh Koscheck UFC 106 walkout shirt.
It wasn’t shown, but a THQ press release makes it sound like UFC Undisputed 2010 is making a serious play for one of the best online fighting games. In this year’s game you’ll apparently be able to form “fight camps and leagues, train like real-life UFC fighters and go online to compete against other camps.” There will be online co-op sparring sessions that dictate your credibility, popularity and the types of sponsorships you get. On top of that, this year’s career mode will include the “Game Is Watching You” system, which will “track every action and use this information to dictate in-game commentary, opponent intelligence and overall career progression.”
This is meaty stuff. The online “camp” system sounds awesome. Sign-ups for The 3rd String Safety camp will come. Since Jason sucks, we’ll need good fighters. Similar to NBA2K10, the game seems to use a dynamic commentary system which should bring your created character to life, which is a breath of fresh air after last year’s game. They barely even mentioned your character last year.
Typically in the world of video games, the first year a sports game comes out is dedicated to getting the gameplay right. THQ did that just about perfectly. The second year is when they add all the features that they wanted to add in year one but didn’t have time. That seems to be the direction that Undisputed is headed.
UFC 2010: Undisputed comes out on May 25th. Yes, my copy is already pre-ordered.

Bloody Elbow Fight Camp?
I certainly hope we get something like that together. :
Some people might write 2010 off as THQ making a quick turn around to beat EA to the punch and make a quick buck, but I think 2010 is going to be pretty kick ass. I’m pumped, to say the least.

The IGN guys don't sound very knowledgable about MMA...
what’s a “front submission”? And what’s BJ’s signature “arm trap”?
Nonethless, I’m glad to hear about the improvements.
when BJ has your back, he traps your arm with one of his legs, making it so you cant handfight and avoid the choke
great addition to the game! PLus they said there are “over 100” fighters on the roster!!! thats over 20 per weight class!!!

My guess, front submission = subs from mount.

im thinkin
north south position… maybe they added an arm in guillotine, a darce, anaconda, etc…
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
Didn't even notice that...
My guess would that it’s submission from everything that isn’t the back. The only real thing there is an RNC.
So that would mean more subs from Guard, half-guard, north-south, side mount and mount.

and hopefully from sprawl...
peruvian necktie
Goldie: "Michael Jordan-esque in his grappling skills is Travis Lutter."
Rogan: "No, no he's not. No."
they mentioned that the necktie is in the game
i forget where, but some interview mentioned it… i cant wait!!

Hey 2010 is gonna have Nate Quarry, that’s all I needed to hear :P

The roster is out...
There’s over 100 fighters in the game, and the list is quite impressive. Check it out.

Really, Randy is in the game? I thought there were things against that or something.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.
I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
I dont believe
that this is the roster for a second. Until i hear it from a legit video game site like Gamespot or ign… or until it is released by THQ. Couture will not be in it and Alexander Gustaffson???? Really?

I don't think any lists are complete as of now
But there are some credible/tentative rosters floating about. Haven’t looked at the one about, honestly (and don’t bag on Gustafsson— dude is undefeated and just beat the shit out of Jared Hamman).

LOLZ
A first iteration sports game that has an 83 average on Metacritic and has sold over 3.5 million copies is like a demo…

not to mention
NO ONLINE SUPPORT!
the first game was great until I really got into fight night round 4 and realized we were receiving regular updates with ea… not to mention the online experience has gotten progressively worse. I pray they get that right this time around or the game franchise will be dead to me as I jump ship to eamma…. I hope it doesn’t come to that.
So it’s a demo? It’s a fucking sports game.
Blackout612- "Wuts teh UFC?"
Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
I don't think he
literally meant it. But I see his points. while they impressed the hell out of me with the end product and proved that mma could be a video game, I def think they didn’t put out the best possible product. if I had to guess I would say in anticipation of ea jumping on the bandwagon they purposely held back. Either way, it was a good effort and I’m sure 2010 will blow it out the water.
That's still bullshit
You’re being more reasonable, but unreasonable nonetheless. It was an exceptional product, but the first of its kind in many years. Fleshing it out over future iterations was fully expected before the product launched. I’ve worked with gaming developers and have been a writer in the industry. People here are making it out to seem as though they half-assed it and put out a bullshit product so that they could make bank. If you guys want to pile on a dev/pub, gather a mob about EA and Activision, not poor little THQ— that was the most critically acclaimed and successful product they’re released in many years. The next iteration could be a lot better, but that’s no reason to be MMA-revisionists (but, honestly, that’s very MMA-fan-like). It was a really good game that could BE better (ie— 2010), not could HAVE been better. Calling it a glorified demo is absolute cartoon character bullshit at its worst.

I am not complaining about the game
I was in awe with it.
I am complaining about the support. We were promised updates and only got one. that update made things worse. They were informed of this by hordes of fans, said things would be done to improve it and nothing was done.
The game was great for what it was, the lack of support is something else. if 2010 is done well enough from the jump though, there should be no issues. But it would be nice to see a more intuitive online multiplayer. Steps taken to boot people with horrible connections, ect. these things could have been fixed with updates. Updates were promised and yet we only saw one. The support on this game stopped a few months after it dropped and thats bullshit. If you’re content with that so be it. Don’t crucify someone for being upset that a company didnt put their best foot forward. new animations, new voices, new anything could have been added through an update, the whole time they were working on 2010 they could have done something to 2009.
it was an entertaining game. Groundbreaking in that it was the first that was able to pull off what it did, but you were cheated as far as support goes. Nothing THQ can say can convince me otherwise. So either they get it right from the jump, and provide the support, or screw them, ea will get it right because thats what ea does.
Two points
A) You never brought up the lack of patching/support in your response to me.
B) I didn’t play the game online to any great lengths (lag wasn’t an issue— you must not play a lot of fighting games online if you’re complaining about selective connections— this isn’t a competitive fighting game like fuckin Soul Calibur), but that still doesn’t defend the fact that dude called it a glorified demo. That’s the point, there’s a line in the sand, and you’re over there with “game was pretty much a demo”.
Blackout612- "Wuts teh UFC?"
Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
My initial post
says in caps no online support. it’s just one before yours.
I Play MW2, Halo 3, fight night round 4 and mag online. I am basing this off FN round 4. It’s not fair to compare this to sf4 or something like that. Every issue I’ve run into with fight night has been corrected online. I def wouldn’t go as far as to say this is a glorified demo. But if within 12 months you can debut and entirely new product but you lacked any worthwhile updates, you definitely didn’t put your best foot forward. Even little things (like your age being the same during your entire career) would have been something correctable with a small patch. Even if that was all they did it would let me know somethign is there. When I am playing fight night and getting new eqiuptment and fighters every few months and I can even get a few new finishing animations from 2009… something is wrong.
Please don't compare EA's online offerings to any other company
They are MAJOR DLC whores, and make people pay for content that’s already on the game disk they just paid 60 dollars for.
That being said, THQ may have done well to do some updates, but the age thing is nitpicking and there was no discernible lag in the online play. That amount of programming is difficult to nail and I would personally prefer a company to devote resources to a new iteration, rather than put a body on something as minor as making a fighter age. That doesn’t mean anything in the scheme of things.
And, again, there’s a reason the game got 8’s almost all the way across the board. It’s a very good game, despite your numerous minor gripes, and you could similarly pick apart any other game with shit like that. That’s fine. I’m not, by any means, saying this title is perfect. It’s very far from it. I hope that 2010 will inch up and land meta-scores in the 8.5-9.0 range (and I would love for it to be higher, obviously). However— you joined a conversation suggesting that this game was a glorified demo, and that is a purely ignorant comment. If you want to discuss various other merits, fine, but this branch is emanating from a clear suggestion that was an incomplete product. Post-production support has nothing to do with negligence. Post-production consumer abuse is EA’s forte. Have fun with their products if that level of attentiveness/robbery somehow satiates you. I’d much rather take a few minor oversights, personally.
Blackout612- "Wuts teh UFC?"
Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
The oversights in the game really did lead to an impression
that THQ rushed it to production to save themselves, not create the best MMA game they could. The lack of cage play, stiff animations, online wins negated by disconnects (fixed eventually), lack of southpaws, limited styles, no upper body movement, similar movesets… I understand the “demo” mentality when things that are essential to MMA are left out of the game.
All that said, I played the game once and meh’d. Not impressed, not scornful. 2010 has a lot more attention to detail unrelated to gameplay, which gives me hope that they really upped the ante overall.

Ha
Try playing Heavenly Sword before you call a full production video game a “demo” because there’s no fucking southpaw or karate. This shit is hilarious… And you’re in creative services? Clearly you’ve never provided content for a game.

Ubernoober- "It like two guy who just stand and swing for fence and try to knock each other shit out it awesome"
Overly hostile.
I explained the sentiment behind the hyperbolic statement, then said I do not know much about the game since I only played it once.
Way to attack my ability to do my work though. Without even knowing what it is that I do…

pdl hit the nail on the head.
You’re being waaay sensitive about fans not praising this game as the holy grail of gaming. It is what it is, a step in the right direction for something that was thought to be impossible to translate into a video game. I don’t think that a little bit more time taken to ensure a better initial product and or dlc support is a bad thing, as it seems you do.

ya Overly Hostile is the perfect word to describe his argument
"And shepherds we shall be, for thee my Lord for thee, Power hath descended forth from thy hand, that our feet may swiftly carry out thy command, we shall flow a river forth to thee, and teeming with souls shall it ever be. In nomine patris, et filii...et spiritus sancti."
i should probably clarify my initial post, i have really enjoyed the game, its still my second favourite game i own(arkham asylum being the best) but i still feel it is lacking, the fighting styles are a bit generic, there aren’t a lot of extra features and the career mode feels repetitive. i’m sorry if you felt insulted but clearly THQ kinda agreed cos they look as if they went all out for 2010
will your create a fighter
get to have banners beside the country you make him from and do you get to actually train with a real camp instead of inviting the camp’s particualr fighter to your camp
I have a feeling...
If they have walkout shirts, then they probably will have create-a-banner. At least that would make sense.

Creating a player will take much longer
THQ has added karate, Greco-Roman wrestling, and Sambo fighting styles while doing away with archetypes for fighters – created fighters will now use individual movesets.
-Anyone who has grown up playing the WWE THQ games knows that as the years have went on and new fighters come in with new moves the laundry list to choose from becomes longer. I am a fan of this, but find it long and more frustrating to make more than a fighter or two. I find that I just am losing valuable gaming time creating a fighter instead of actually playing the game.
FNR4 lets you download player made fighters. They’d do well to steal that idea.
I liked Undisputed, but it was more of a solid foundation than anything else. Sounds like they are really making the game complete now.
"an excellent example of why most MMA "journalism" is a joke. Pseudonyms like "toxic" and shitty writing like that dopey article"--- Joe Rogan.
So long as they come out with “templates” for fighters, that can be edited, I see no reason to worry. Considering how there was NO real customization of your style in 2009, this is a very, very, very welcome change.

How BAD-ASS would it be to have a Pride FC mode?

I want Soccer Kicks, Stomps, and Knees to the Head on the ground.

I'll probably get both
But Zuffa owns the rights to Pride FC and the Best of Pride has brought back memories of beautiful brutality. So, a “special” Pride FC mode would be nice in Undisputed 2010.
