UFC 109 Results: Chael Sonnen Grinds Out Nate Marquardt
The dramatic difference in their wrestling skills decide this one. Sonnen was on top most of the fight and did a lot of damage from that position. Marquardt hurt Sonnen and ended the fight in a dominant position but it wasn't enough to make up the two round deficit Sonnen had taken.
The two top middleweight contenders came out firing at each other. But Sonnen quickly shot in and put his neck out where Nate Marquardt threatened a guillotine. But Sonnen escaped. From there Sonnen applied some text book ground and pound from inside Marquardt's guard.
Marquardt then escaped to his feet only to be taken down again and the beating resumed. Sonnen ground Marquardt down as the first round ended.
The third round was the same as the first two. Sonnen's wrestling advantage showed immediately as he quickly found himself in Marquardt's guard, landing elbows and punches. Marquardt threatened a kimura at one point but Sonnen escaped. From there the assault recommenced. But then Marquardt landed an elbow from the bottom and soon Sonnen was bleeding like a stuck pig. But Sonnen remained in control and continued to work ground and pound even as he bled. Marquardt nearly got back to his feet but Sonnen took the fight down.
In the third Marquardt shot in and seemed to nearly have Sonnen on his back, helpless like a crab but for naught. Then Sonnen immediately took Marquardt down again. Marquardt would threaten for a knee only to be punished for rolling into a bad position. Toward the end of the third round Marquardt threatened a guillotine but couldn't finish. Then Marquardt pulled an incredibly sweet reversal and swept Sonnen onto his back. Marquardt fired with ground and pound at the end. Sonnen ended the fight on his back, bleeding and helpless.

ahhhh man.
That was so hard to watch. My man Nate got his ass kicked. Just shows you that those that can impose their will win fights, not always the “best” fight. Because Nate is a top 10 PfP in my book.
Got to give to Chael though…relentless!!
Did anyone pay attention to what I was commenting all week?
Wow…. 2nd week in a row I hit big. Guilard, Serra and now Sonnen have made me a mildy wealthy man. I have no idea what I am going to do with all this money. Maybe I should buy myself a seat at the magnificent 7 round table. They all picked Marquardt against better logic.
How is it “against better logic” to pick a fighter that is more accomplished, bigger, and overall a consensus higher ranked fighter?

Nate is NOT bigger than Sonnen. Maybe slightly more muscular, but he’s 3 inches shorter and the little bit of extra muscle doesn’t make up for the 3 inches. It’s been reported that Sonnen had to lose 36 pounds in 22 days when he took the Dan Miller fight on short notice. Now, with a real full-length camp, he probably doesn’t have to cut nearly as much, but the dude is probably naturally around 210, and I highly doubt Nate is naturally bigger than 210, and probably a significant bit smaller.

Sonnen himself said in the Post Fight Press that when Nate and he wrestled 5 years ago, Nate got the better of him. Nate can fight at 205 and be competitive…not so with Sonnen.
Nate lost because he allowed another to impose how the fight would be fought. Chael did a GREAT job and impressed many, including me. But I do not see him doing again to Nate.
better logic...
Considering Nate regularly trains with great wrestlers like Evens & GSP, and taking into account that Nate has had an excellent record of imposing his skills set on his opponents, I think it is intelligent choice to pick Nate. If they fight again in 3 months I would pick Nate again. He IS simply the better, more well rounded fighter.
He allowed himself to get bullied and lost. He won’t likely do it again.
I guess he’s just going to be the Forrest Griffin of lightweight. Churn out upset after upset but fans will still expect him to lose.

actually
I think Chael would have a great shot at beating Vitor. Vitors weakness has always been wrestlers who can grind him out. As for Chael beating Andy its not impossible but I doubt it.

i mean...
I think anderson silva’s weakness is obviously wrestling. So yeah, anderson definitely has the better stand up… but i don’t think chael’s chin is suspect. and we saw how anderson had a a problem with the takedown against hendo before hendo gave up
Nate looked way too patient. I think he was too confident in his ability to finish, which Sonnen capitalized on. That being said, I am very happy to see a new contender at mw.
Good for Sonnen
He earned that win. I didn’t see him having a chance, but he whooped ass for 14 minutes.

LLLLAAAAMMMEEE. Not watching the fights…snowed in. But seriously not super cool, literally one of the most likeable MMA dudes losing to one of MMA’s super douches.
don't be a mark
Sonnen just wants you and everyone else to think he’s a superdouche. You gotta see beyond the BS and appreciate how successfully he’s manipulated everyone into wanting to see him get beat up. more money for him.

to add, i’m only looking out for you as a fellow Baltimorean

I appreciate your concern. But just to clarify, to me there is a difference between a “heel,” or “villian” and a douche. A douche is someone, at least to me, that you just want to go away. I don’t want to pay to see him get murdered by Anderson/Vitor, more I would love it if he gets a great job offer from Nike or some big corporation and retires. I’d pay money to see Brock Lesnar get knockout by someone, but Chael just irritates me.
Love to see Sonnen work more to end fights rather than just be content to control position and keep busy. The outcome of the fight was a foregone conclusion after about 3mins of the first round.
Sonnen more than earned his shot at the MW title with his last 2 wins and if he performs like this either Vitor or Andy could be in for a long night.
Anyways seriously who the hell was that guy standing in for Nate The Great that was the worst i’ve seen him perform in a long time. He had been on such a roll that it boggles my mind how he could not have been more prepared for this fight, i’m so disapointed in Nate I can’t even believe it he needs to look in the mirror and find out where he wants to go after this.
I'm going to be lame and quote myself from the live blog:
Chael called this fight exactly. Dude deserves insane amounts of credit.
"I’m a better fighter." True story, Chael. True fucking story. Wow.

Me.
Never assume a well credentialed wrestler who doesn’t mind decisions will be an easy fight. I still pick Anderson by sub though.

Yeah...
I was confused when the fight was first announced. This is good though, because if I was better than Joe Silva at matching fights, I’d be pissed off that I didn’t have his job.
I remember when it was first announced
And most the comments were “Poor Sonnen”. Including the experts and MMA writers. But I knew better.

Easy win? No. But I did think he was overall better and would be able to beat Sonnen. I did think the odds made Chael the better bet.

Yeah, and the public must have bought into his yaking
Reports from Vegas say the payout for Sonnen was huge
I was the only one rooting for Chael at my house.
I knew his wrestling would be the factor in this fight. He was the underdog in the Filho fight (although he was coo coo) and dominated, he was the underdog against Okami and dominated, and HUGE underdog against Nate and beat the dude up. Chael is very overlooked by people and its because he’s hated by many.
I’m gonna go ahead and say it now, he may not beat Silva, but he’s gonna give him a good match.

Well to be fair
He was overlooked before because he was seen as boring, now everyone hates him though but I don’t even know how true that is with everyone cheering for him at least at the event and a good portion of people realizing his trolling.

gah
Goddamn Chael, tough SOB he is… picked the two fights near -100 in my parlay then dropped the pick which was at -600.
If Belfort beats Silva
And Sonnen gets a title shot, Sonnen—in my opinion—will probably become MW champion.
That is surprising and awesome.
I TOLD YOU
SO!! Called Sonnen a while ago and got a few haters. Just thought I’d gloat a little bit. ;)

Boring fight
I can’t figure out the phrase “did a lot of damage” that’s used in this article. I think "scored a lot of points’ is more realistic. Especially given that Nate looked like he could easily do two more rounds and Sonnen was srtill lying on the floor an hour later trying to catch his breath.
Sean Sherk fights this fight and everyone screams lay and pray. Why is Sonnen above that same call?
Impressed
I definitely counted Sonnen out before this fight. I won’t anymore. I love his commentary as well. He is intelligent and has good insight into fights. That being said, I think he is doing promotion 101, because I definitely want to see him fight Silva and have Silva break his jaw to shut him up. However, I would much rather see a super fight with Silva against a GSP or someone like that. I would also love to see Machida in a karate moviesque Royal Rumble and just nunchuk (sp?) like 40 guys.
