UFC 109 Results: Paulo Thiago Batters and Chokes Mike Swick

Photo by Scott Peterson via MMA Weekly

Paulo Thiago dominated the fight on the feet and finished quickly on the ground.

Swick's only good moment of the fight was Swick's undoing as he stunned Thiago with a punch only to get too aggressive and drop his guard. Fatal mistake as the powerful Thiago tagged him with a near knock out counter punch. From there Swick was in deep water and Thiago quickly drowned him.

The rivalry continued between Paulo Thiago, representing the Brazilian special forces and Mike Swick representing the only slightly less formidable American Kickboxing Academy.

Thiago seemed to land the first shots in the opening round, scoring with the leg kick. Swick began to counter later in the round as the crowd got restive. But Thiago continued to be the aggressor, firing with punches. Swick got a takedown toward the end of the round where Thiago held guard and threatened submissions.

In the second Swick caught Thaigo and seemed to have him stunned. Then Thiago answered with a hard counter punch that dropped Swick. Once Swick was stunned on the ground Thiago quickly landed a submission and choked Swick out.

Swick is a shell of what he was at MW he might need to go back up because at WW he’s a gatekeeper at best. Great win for Thiago he continues to improve I wonder who the UFC will give him next.

he might need to go back up because at WW he’s a gatekeeper at best.

Which is all he ever was at MW

There are too many big, powerful skilled grapplers at MW for him to be a contender. Sonnen, Okami, and Palhares would all maul him (Okami already has) and Maia would also dominate him, albeit with a little more finesse. Hell, I also wouldn’t give him much chance against strikers like Anderson, Vitor or Nate.

Swick is what he is. He’s an entertaining gatekeeper for the contender career track. He can beat non-contenders all day, but elite fighters crush him.

How far can Thiago be from a title shot at this point?

I’m thinking 2 top victories, maybe three if the UFC does what the UFC does best (dictate title shots based on things other then wins). The guy is awesome. He went from nothing, to fighting top flight competition and never looking bad.

I think it depends on how Fitch/Alves and Daley/Koschek go. If the cards fall a certain way, he can fight one of those 4 for a title shot. There could be outcomes in those fights that would make it so he needs 2 fights before a title shot, but only because both of those winners clearly need shots before him.

Paulo Thiago GOT ROBBED of submission of the night. Utterly robbed.

For pure submission, I agree, but Randy never submits anybody. Call it preferential treatment.

I call it favouritism.

I was pretty furious about it as well, but I think they ended up giving it to Thiago in the end. Maybe they just had Randy’s finish queued up as they were making the highlight?

Want to know why Paulo Thiago won?

Because he had the power of Ismail in his corner.

Thiago’s weight is on Swick’s right arm which is being pressed against his neck and cutting off the blood on that side (which is what Rogan meant I would assume) while the arm underneath cuts the blood off on that side. From half guard that choke is brutal.

Poor bastard, he didn’t know what hit him…

by dancingChicken on Feb 7, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

Lets clear up 2 things

1. Paulo did get Sub OTN but on the broadcast Coutures sub was shown

2. Swick got BOPE’d
