UFC 109 Results: Melvin Guillard Athletically Explodes on Ronnys Torres

via sherdog.com

Working with Greg Jackson does wonders.  Kind of.

Melvin Guillard showed the same weaknesses that have plagued him throughout his career.  UFC rookie Ronnys Torres was able to control the pace of the bout with a relentless takedown assault.  Guillard played the bottom game patiently, using his athleticism and explosion to get the fight back on the feet.

Round one went to Torres and his top control game, but Guillard evened the slate in the last two rounds with effective striking.  An even third round may have tipped Melvin's way when he swept the Brazilian following a takedown and rained down strikes from mount as the horn sounded.

A classic Mongoose vs Cobra fight

And Melvin did a pretty good job of playing the Mongoose. Thanks for the pile of Cash Melvin!

Is it just me

or did anyone else score that two rounds to one for Torres cause of takedowns?

I’d say 2nd round was close, but I still gave it to Guillard because he did some damage from the bottom and more from the feet and top

Nope, just you. :)

I'm with you

on this one, not like the haters out there ;), I had it rds. 1 and 3 for Torres, but thats what happens when the judges have to pick a winner, this even could have been argued as a draw if the rules allowed for it.

Speak english anyone?????

This judging gets worse everyday ! Ronnys Torres was robbed ! Melvin looked better but after watching it 3 times theres no way he won. I thought he would tell Joe " I didn’t but why be honest . Come on Mike open your eyes.

My friend...... Its not the judging that gets worse

Its fans like you that have too much alcohol while your watching it, talk during most of it so as to not pay enough attention to make a proper assessment, then get emotional and go home and write stupid comment like this.

by staytrue2010 on Feb 6, 2010 10:24 PM EST reply actions

only on paper but i guess thats all that counts yeah bullshit

by troquezz on Feb 6, 2010 10:26 PM EST reply actions

I wouldn't

go as far as called Melvins standup great last night, Torres did more on the feet in the first round, and Melvin did very little from the ground with the exception of spending time on his ass.

by proflex on Feb 7, 2010 2:19 PM EST up reply actions

sounds like i struck a chord Duck The english comment was meant they gave to Melvin because he could speak english

by troquezz on Feb 6, 2010 10:34 PM EST reply actions

Oh yeah

The UFC has a real BAD history with giving out wins to non-english speaking fighters, oh wait no not at all. It could be that Melvin won because he did a considerable amount of more damage on the feet and when Torres was able to drag him down he wasn’t able to do jack.

Melvin def took that fight

As a grappler I was impressed with torres’ ability to put melvin down and to do a decent job of keeping him down once it was there. Outside of that melvin took him on the feet with crisper, more accurate and damaging striking. Also the amount of damage done of the ground was minimal. Not to mention it wasn’t as if he had a plethora of submission attempts in lieu of GnP. The fight was scored as it should have been, at least imho.

Melvin did the job, hands down

He made an 18-1 fighter look more like a 13-6
