Canseco is desperate for cash due to many bad decisions

That’s all this is. He’s looking for anyway to make $$$ that he can find, and if getting his ass kicked by Herschel makes him $20,000 or so, he’ll do it.

I have no doubt he’ll try hard and try to learn. I also have no doubt he doesn’t really belong in MMA at his age, physical condition and level of (non) training.

Oh it gets worse

52 year old ESPN analyst and former Lions GM Matt Millen now wants to get into mma.

http://www.mmafighting.com/2010/02/04/matt-millen-would-love-to-try-mma/

I’m all for the sport getting more coverage in the mainstream, however, I dont want this sport to be turned into a slide show act and have these freaks get the attention.

Right now it seems that mma is becoming the next WWE. Not taken seriously but gets attention when a ex-football star, youtube sensation, or some other guy who has a large following gets involved. A lot like when Mike Tyson or Floyd Mayweather or football stars are at WWE events.

I thought it was pretty funny, but mostly just the Downy Jr stuff. The full retard line was perfect. I never forgot it. Tom Cruise’s act was pretty predictable and overrated. Just act like a really crazy CEO. It was a great idea, but Tom doesn’t deserve any credit for it. I thought, if anything, he overdid it. The SNL sidekick was way better I thought. The rest of the movie was mostly predictable chuckles. Downey turned it into a potential cult classic.

Update

When Gracie and Black told the Canseco representatives what was involved. IE; the training regimen, time required and more importantly the COST the representative stated that Canseco “scoffed”.

Also, Strikeforce own Mike Afromowitz stated that regardless of how much people hype it up and regardless of how much Twittering Canseco does, that they have no interest in putting together such a match and it will not happen.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Jose’s not trying to get this into a reality show deal. If that “Chasing Jose” article someone linked to in another article, woldn’t be at all unlike him…

No... the only freakshow-ish natured fight that they can/should logically make:

that way it satisfies everyone’s lame arguments of “i bet you’d still watch”, without making a mockery of the sport.
.

PS
I’d watch two women having an MMA fight in an octagon full of jello, but it doesn’t mean it’s a legit fight, nor should a major MMA promotion do it.

by Anton Tabuena on Feb 6, 2010 1:22 AM EST up reply actions

Ya, a power ranger wouldn't

make a mockery to the sport to the uneducated mainstream sports media. Imagine average non-mma fan following Joe seeing that headline, my lawd. To channel my inner Ocho – Child Please.

Gotta be real if you wish to respond to me, friend.

That power ranger fight would be a punchline on ESPN laughed off with half the overall coverage but twice the negative coverage, where Walker vs Canseco would be a legitimate curiosity to mainstream media and would attract a lot of attention. Eyeballs are what is important, and the merits of MMA in itself would do the rest. Load the card with Fedor, and action packed fights with guys like Le and Manhoef with exciting styles. Kimbo was a freakshow, but tons of people continue to tune into see him, and I assure you more than a few MMA finatics have been created since then.

A fight like this brings in curious eyes from the baseball and football communities, and would have SBnation.com blogs about those sports busy with coverage that wouldn’t be there otherwise.

People like Tony Kornheiser are going to think what they think. MMA haters aren’t going to hate the sport any more or any less because of stuff like this.

Besides, it’s better than peeing in fruit, creating a reality show around a youtube brawler, or handing a shot to a 2-1 pro-wrestler who is 1-1 in the company to fight a near 50 year old man half his size. That made a mockery of the sport much more than what is clearly a sideshow and intented to be nothing more. (And are any of the UFC’s freakshows proven bad for the sport? Hell no)

Why are we so worried about what the unwashed think anyway?

Unless you’re concerned about making a mockery of the sport in the tiny little sher-blog bubble we internet mma-aficionado exist in?

by Wolfgangsta on Feb 6, 2010 2:07 AM EST up reply actions

Please.

Do you actually think they’re dumb enough to over looked what he has done, during and after his “power ranger career”?

Sixth Degree Karate Black Belt
2003 World Karate Union Hall of Fame
2003 Master of the Year(American Karate)
2006 "Ruff Man" Grand Champion
2006 Gold Medal (MTIA) Master Toddys Full contact Muay Thai
Has his own MMA apparel line
Trains with UFC fighters
Gracie Barra Blue Belt
1-0 in MMA
and more importantly, serious about the sport, and NOT IN IT FOR A QUICK BUCK.

What’s canseco got? a name? …and?

Kimbo, Herschel, and Jason David Frank > Canseco because they are actually serious about the sport and they actually TRAIN. Comparing them to a joke like Canseco is just silly and ignorant.

by Anton Tabuena on Feb 6, 2010 2:29 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, I do think most people

are dumb enough to ignore all those well-known and prestigious championships and acolades and see him as just a power ranger.

Or maybe I am wrong and they’d be smart enough to youtube him getting rocked and winning a very weird ass fight where his opponent didn’t finish him twice, and write off all that pseudo-mcdojo/toughman junk for what it is.

It would probably be a mix of both.

Jason David Frank is a freakshow himself and a pretty mediocre mixed martial artist. Just one a lot less marketable, and a lot more embarrassing for Strikeforce.

by Wolfgangsta on Feb 6, 2010 2:45 AM EST up reply actions

I'm not trying to bash what JDF has done as a martial artist

but don’t over sell all that stuff for more what what it is. JDF wouldn’t last two fights in the UFC or Strikeforce.

by Wolfgangsta on Feb 6, 2010 2:46 AM EST up reply actions

and Canseco will?

legit MMA fighter serious about the sport, or Canseco? hmm.. I am not overselling JDF, but he is leaps and bounds greater, and more dedicated than Canseco will ever be… and you can take shots on how “bad” JDF looked in his debut fight, but he showed he can take a punch, and finished by omoplata. What has canseco done? run away from Choi, and get beaten down?

and no, SF doesn’t think Canseco is more marketable.

by Anton Tabuena on Feb 6, 2010 3:03 AM EST up reply actions

Ya that picture is nice and all

But Jose vs Walker has been all over ESPN. Dana himself even ranted on it at the press conference today.

In the universe you live in, where “making a mockery of the sport” is some crime or whatever and should be avoided, perception is reality. In this case JDF vs Walker would be a power ranger vs an aged football star, and Canseco vs Walker would be an absolutely hated pro-athlete vs a universally beloved pro-athlete.

People would line up in droves to see Walker smash Canseco. The entire Inside the NFL panel said as much yesterday.

See things for what they are. Don’t impose MMA nerd sher-blog values onto a situation where they wouldn’t exist, like sports media or the so called “casual follower”, especially if you’re concerned about “mockerys” or the sport’s perception.

there is merit to what I am saying.

Besides, what would feel worse post fight to us and everyone else?

Walker standing over a bloodied Canseco, or Hershal Walker losing to a former Power Ranger?

Jose battered and bruised by Walker would be the first time the mainstream public really became invested in a fight and gratified by it’s outcome.

Walker losing to a power ranger would be uncomfortable to everyone.

by Wolfgangsta on Feb 6, 2010 3:16 AM EST up reply actions

No comparison. Conseco is a roided out has-been who’s looking for a quick paycheck and Walker is a well respected athlete that’s fighting because he wants a challenge. Pretty sure Jose’s black belt was bought at Wal-Mart. Also…

by Damon O. on Feb 6, 2010 12:47 AM EST up reply actions

The problem with this is that Jose Canseco has been seen as a joke since he retired from baseball. Everyone scoffed at his book at first, and even though it was true, the Surreal Life the celebrity boxing, the super hulk, and the way it always seems like he has a grudge when he’s been telling more “truth” about roids in basbeall make everyone percieve him as a joke. So even if his TKD credentials are legit, and even if he puts in the time with Gracie, a fight with him is going to come off as joke and complete spectacle.

by Phildo on Feb 6, 2010 12:46 AM EST reply actions

Doesn't matter. Jose's antics are the kind stuff sports radio has been built on.

What better way to get coverage for “Strikeforce” and “MMA” than this. All we hear about now is “Ultimate Fighting”, Kimbo and Lesnar.

by Wolfgangsta on Feb 6, 2010 2:12 AM EST up reply actions

TKD black belts are F’n easy to get. I watched my 15 yr old overweight sister-in-law get one. She was no elite athlete.

I would politely request that BE stop publishing Jose’s tweets. You’re only feeding into this and making this fight somewhat of a possibility by giving it attention.

I say this because I sincerely want him to go away.

by Dooda on Feb 6, 2010 1:20 AM EST reply actions

You and I know

TKD isn’t even a real martial art anymore in the US, but America doesn’t know that.

If Jose has a real or fake blackbelt, that really wouldn’t matter, and would give the “fight” the bare minimum of “legitimacy” it needs.
