Anyone else think the way it’s set up and phrased will confuse mainstream, casual fans (obviously not those who go to sites like this one and actively seek out MMA-related information)?

It is a great move. It doesn’t damage the UFC brand at the same time it gives more weight to the WEC brand. Now what they need to do is take some lesser fighters that people know, but wouldn’t be good as a main of co-main in the UFC and put them on a WEC show as a UFC presents. Put them on as the opening fight. Sorta like the Affliction presents Nelson vs. AA on the Exc show. But this was it props up the WEC stars as more important fighters then the more minor UFC fighters. It implies an exchange rate that doesn’t damage the UFC brand, but puts the WEC of more of a par level with the UFC.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
Jonathan Snowden suggested Chris Leben. Leben is a fine choice, but I think someone like Diego Sanchez would work better. Coming off a title match loss, people want to see him, casual fans have strong feelings about him, he is entertaining. He might be too big of a star, but if the plan will work it Diego is the right guy.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
That is interesting.
i really think this thing has a shot of being successful. The UFC is going to be on VS, so UFC fans will find out where Vs is on their TVs, and I think that if they push this on the UFC and WEC shows leading up to the event it has a chance of working.
I don’t think it will make a shit ton of money, but it could work.
Sadly, Strikeforce might be counter programming this with a free CBS card..

I don’t think that’s going to happen, and isn’t the story when a PPV gets counterprogrammed by free TV that we’re supposed to cry that the free TV people are mean and then buy the PPV and dvr the free tv so we can ff through commercials?
that's if it's the UFC..
If it happens, I think most fans will just watch the free card, and steal the WEC show.
by Anton Tabuena on Feb 4, 2010 1:12 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t think most people care enough to buy the WEC card even if there is no Strikeforce on CBS

A lot of people are already skeptical about how well a WEC PPV would sell,
and they’re trying to add the UFC brand I guess to make it help out a little, but with a free card on CBS, it’s bound to lose even more buys I think.

My position has always been that if StrikeForce is doing this to protect themselves from a UFC live event on Spike, then I’m fine with it. If it’s them trying to “fight back” then it’s petty.
yes, I think it has also a lot to do with them being scared of being counter programmed
if they put Kimbo slice on Spike TV, it will take away tons and tons of viewers for sure.
by Anton Tabuena on Feb 4, 2010 1:21 PM EST up reply actions
i agree
but the cbs show will probably trounce this one cuz who will pay 45 bucks for fights that we used to watch on versus
by Skins4ever on Feb 4, 2010 1:26 PM EST up reply actions
I meant that if SF did go against the WEC,
it’s probably cause they’re afraid to have it on a different day and possibly be countered by the UFC..
Kimbo Slice on Spike TV = game over.

Why is that such a sad statement to me?
Has it really come to this? Can the casual fan not appreciate this sport more? Maybe I am being extremely naive, but if the path to success in this sport is creating a name for yourself by beating up overmatched guys in street fights, why are there not more you-tube videos of this nature? Or, is the general public too caught up in the “persona” that is Kimbo Slice?
How can this sport advance when the beauty of what MMA is all about is not appreciated and it takes WWE-like or you-tube persona’s to transcend the sport?
Its smart by strikeforce because they will crush WEC with a free show.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
but is it smart?
even if they successfully do this and hurt the WEC show, in the big picture that doesn’t really hurt Zuffa. if they ‘crush’ the WEC on this one show, what does that really do for them?

And the people on the internet who knew that Affliction, Elite XC, and the IFL would kill the UFC will rejoice, and then what exactly?
and who are these people you speak of? Who thought Affliction, EliteXC or the IFL would kill the UFC? Who thinks SF will kill the UFC? most of you guys are just being blindly too defensive about the whole thing, two organizations can co-exist and if both are successful the better for the sport IMO.

I agree that his personality wins over a lot of fans, the majority to be honest.

how you can separate the two.

Can’t stand his personality, but really appreciate what he has done, going from a loser boxercise instructor to a major figure in sports entertainment. He worked his ass off to get there, and I admire that.
The Fertillas? Born loaded, handed their dad’s casino, took $100 mil a year payouts and left it $6.5 bil in the whole. Basically they represent everything wrong with our economic system.
I can’t hate on the rich for simply being rich, having inherited money is not a crime and does not mean they wouldn’t have been successful without being born into wealth. although I can definitely appreciate someone who comes from humble begginings and are able to turn their life around.
If you think about it, if the Fertittas got their money from their parents, so did DW getting his money from the Fertittas, he wouldn’t be there today if it wasn’t for them.

That’s true, but he also didn’t make $100 mil + through the 90’s and then leave the company $6.5 bil in debt with everyone but you holding the bag.
I don’t hate the rich for being rich, but I do hold it against them when they can’t do better with the advantages given them.
If DW left the company, he’d have been liable for 10% of the debit. I’m not saying that he stayed with them for that reason though, he definitely wanted the UFC to succeed and even changed the Fertittas minds when they wanted to sell it and cut their losses. I don’t really give DW the props for making the UFC what it is today, but I can’t dispute the fact that if it wasn’t for him, the UFC would have been long gone.

these are the people on the forums.
The point is that they will beat Zuffa one night, but that it is meaningless, just like those forum people i mentioned.
it’s not meaningless at all, DW brags when they kill competition with playback, it gives his followers enough ammunition to look down on its competitors.

Pride is Forever
Im for competition but not to the point that your intent and actions is to directly cause the demise of the other org. Coker and SF taking shit of WEC, now being twice might be smart but its a disgusting move. One Dana White is enough for me.

im sure u must hate ALL of Television then.
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
coker is going to screw himself on this one because people wont buy a wec ppv just because of faber, they should just keep putting the shows on versus
by Skins4ever on Feb 4, 2010 1:31 PM EST up reply actions
nothing it just proves people didnt want buy to wec show when they are used to watching it for free
by Skins4ever on Feb 4, 2010 1:27 PM EST up reply actions
I don’t really know how smart it is. One, a WEC has less build up than a UFC event, and one of the best parts about counterprogramming is getting Dana to run his mouth.
Plus, what is the benefit of crushing the WEC? Everyone seems to think that the WEC failing will lead to a merger with the UFC, and how will that help Strikeforce exactly? Give the UFC the top fighters in more divisions? Cause Zuffa to release more people at the bottom of the divisions so SF can get some more “ufc washouts?”
Its a minor victory, but really only if the UFC throws its marketing machine behind WEC and it fails. Maybe Zuffa wants it to fail to oust Harris and absorb WEC into UFC. The WEC show will not eat into the CBS shows viewers, but the CBS show will certainly take some people on the fence about WEC for 45 bucks.
Some people think I am a dumb, ugly human being, but really I am a beautiful ape, with exceptional verbal skills.
Apparently SF has created and/or stolen Many Stars from the UFC
so maybe they’re hoping to force the UFC/WEC merger so that they can get some more “UFC Vets”
I'm like PacMan fightin you silly kids... throw ya Hatton the ring, and get knocked outlike Ricky did.
lol.
i always thought they should just throw the ufc brand on the wec
call it ufc lite or something but the wec name makes people think its not related to the ufc at all and very few casual fans know that the wec hosts the best 135 and 145 lb fighters in the world
well mr milk, in going with your username…
Skim UFC?
Fat Free UFC?

So the UFC would be “Whole UFC” or “Vitamin UFC”, and WEC would be “Soy UFC”… i could get behind that
I'm old school hating Lesnar, I've been hating Lesnar since '08
Tall
is not the right word for WEC.
I’d call it UFC: Bushido.

so then would you call a small starbucks coffee a Bushido coffee or a tall coffee?

Personally I would just ask for a small coffee if I wanted a small coffee.

1. UFC sign is too small
2. If ever recognized by casual fans, it the huge WEC logo is still the main focus.
that would barely make a difference sales wise, I think.
I am. I think. I will. - Ayn Rand
The letters UFC on the poster don’t mean much, the meaning behind the letters on the UFC poster could mean a lot.
Are we reading too much into it? is the UFC only acting as the payperview producer? If that is the case, then this is a one-time branding and they won’t be re-branding the whole WEC as the UFC presents the WEC. Does anyone actually know anything yet?
read the top half of the poster, and think of it as the voiceover from a tv spot. if it takes them half the promo to even mention the wec, and it’s presented in a way that makes these title defenses seem like actual ufc fights, then casual fans and business owners may fall for it. that’s my take anyway.
