How, in the name of all that is holy, did CHAEL SONNEN become the big story of UFC 109

he is sure becoming it, it’s smart, but he’s making fans that love to hate him.

I love trolls...
Maybe that is why I get excited everytime I see a headline with Chael’s name in it. I know that it will be an entertaining story/quote with a TON of post’s of ppl saying how much they hate him… He is a brilliant marketer. Nobody would know who he was or talk about him at all if it wasn’t for his "trash talking"… You go Chael!
by mrnice on Feb 4, 2010 1:54 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
They would know who he was and talk about him without the trash talking if he were just a better and more entertaining fighter…
Not taking anything away from his win over Okami, cause that was a great performance, but right now it’s an outlier.

He’s just trollin…him and Diaz would be an amazing combo.
If I’m an interviewer I’m skipping Diego, Carwin, and Nate Marquardt…I’d rather have soundbites from Koscheck, Nick Diaz, Chael Sonnen, and Frank Mir. Those guys just know how to generate heat.

I don’t think the Diaz brothers put on an act, though. I really think that’s just how they behave. Everyone else has different levels of heel-heat, but Nick & Nate will always back it up & fight. Why else would he have fought Joe Riggs in the hospital?
And why would you pass up Diego Sanchez? He’s great for a wacky soundbite.

Come one, the Diaz brothers are probably the realest in MMA. That’s not an act, when they’re not bashing their opponents they are still talking sh*t. Ever heard Nick Diaz discuss eating whole natural foods? The guy has a chip on his shoulder.

As a professional wrestling fan, what Sonnen did was generate “cheap heat” or “X-Pac heat” with you. Attacking Coleman for no real reason and saying nonsensical things can do that. I am more than aware of what he is doing, so I personally don’t care. I never really cared for Sonnen to begin with, but he is a good Middleweight, yet I am pretty indifferent to Sonnen.

Sonnen plays a great heel, and he knows what buttons to push. I love the fact he doesn’t have the ability to edit his thoughts before they reach his mouth. My thoughts exactly!
The whole week I was like, “Wow, is this guy really just a dick?”
After watching the video I’m realizing he’s just really sarcastic and has a dry sense of humor. I bet he really is just a nice guy, but it’s the tone of his voice along with the way it sounds that really makes him come off as a dick.
If he could just refine his delivery of sarcasm and his dry jokes then I think people will come around to him (think Forrest and Amir).

I probably wouldn’t feel that way if he pulled out the “I’m a republican” stuff again, but I can imagine him being an alright guy overall.

Starting to love Sonnen
He is so great at riling everyone up. He gets half the people pissed, and the other half are so “indifferent” (i.e. pissed) to what he is doing, that they have to come post and tell us how indifferent they are.
I’m really looking forward to this fight. Sonnen’s standup is improving, as he showed in the Okami fight, and his wrestling is tops in the division (2x National Champ, Olympic Alternate). Of course his biggest weakness is his submission defense, and while Marquardt hasn’t been subbing anyone lately, we all know he has the Jiu Jitsu chops to do so.
I see Marquardt having the edge on the feet, with Sonnen having a big edge in wrestling, so he will probably force the takedown as soon as the standup isn’t going his way. Then we will see if he can hold Nate down and do some damage, or if Nate can sub him off his back, or scramble to get the fight back to where he wants. Honestly, it should be a really good fight. That, or Nate will blast him in the face and knock him out like he’s been doing to everyone lately.

Chael is awesome.
I’m rooting for him. While a Nate vs Anderson rematch would be fun, I think I’d get more enjoyment out of the build-up to a Chael vs Anderson fight.

Sonnen is awesome.
I was already rooting for him simply because I’ve never liked Nate, but this new uberdick persona he’s rocking is hilarious. He’s going to talk his way right into a shitle tot if he manages to get past Marquart.
The one thing I’ve never really understood about MMA fans is the way that they seem to give Nate a pass. The guy has the same ratio of growth as UBEREEM and is a proven steroid user, but nobody ever brings that up or holds it against him. What’s the deal with that?

This has to be, by a wide margain, the most attention Chael Sonnen has ever gotten in his entire life
So frankly, I applaud him for figuring out exactly what it takes to get noticed in MMA, sans absurd physical gifts and talent. The sport is filled with respectful, nice guys. Nobody cares about them. We now care about Chael Sonnen. That’s truly a remarkable thing if you think about it. Chael’s cracked the code. Keep doing your thing, Chael. Hate on, Hater. Hate on.

Who did he beat?
Sparring partners with short memory . . . Josh Koscheck & Chael Sonnen
Koscheck calls out Dan Hardy, “Who did he beat?”
Answer: AKA fighter Mike Swick
Sonnen calls out Anderson Silva, “Who did he beat?”
Answer: Team Quest co-owner Dan Henderson

But Dan hasn’t trained with the Oregon crew in years.

Shit talk
Is he doing anything that any other fighter who runs his mouth hasn’t done already? Chael Sonnen is just talking shit, and might be delusional enough to believe what he says is true.

![Anderson Silva talks Demian Maia - "Each of us has his main specialty:
"It is not simply jiu jitsu, it is an MMA fight, a new style which comprises various techniques and elements. It's hard to say that I would get him standing and he would get me on the ground. Of course each of us has his main specialty, but fighting is fighting. MMA is a new sport, so we are training and studying. I think we have to sit our butts in serious homework, read and review, watch what we're doing well in training and we are not. I will continue studying the rest of my life. This has worked so far. It may be that an hour is gone, but it is paying off. For me, I treat every fight as if I was studying for a [college] entrance exam," Silva said.
