UFC 109 Preview: Quote of the Day: Chael Sonnen on Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen, Nate Marquardt

Photo

"I’m not holding back on Nate, necessarily; I haven’t been asked about him. Secondly, there’s not a lot of ammunition there. Every now and then in this sport – and it’s every now and then; it’s extremely rare – but you’re going to come across a good guy. For every dirt bag in this business, you’re going to run into a Nate Marquardt or a Chael Sonnen or a Rich Franklin somewhere along the way. Two decent human beings have ended up getting paired together."

Chael Sonnen talking to Kevin Iole about UFC 109 opponent Nate Marquardt and the surprising lack of bad mouthing Sonnen's been doing of him.

Sonnen also talks about UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva:

Look, he’s not my kind of a guy. This is a grown man that’s got earrings. This is a grown man who wears his hat sideways. This is a guy who wears pink T-shirts. This guy wouldn’t make it 12 minutes in my neighborhood. I live in a nice neighborhood and we’d still run him out."

I have a bunch of friends in West Linn

Pretty much all of them wear sideways hats and the occasional pink shirt. Every 14-25 year old I’ve seen/met in West Linn fits Sonnen’s description. idk what the hell he’s talking about, unless he moved.

Sorry if you got offended.

I only referred to his Asian wife/girlfriend because everyone’s accusing him of the KKK comment and everyone going after him for being a Republican racist. My comment you were replying too is only about Chael’s persona and nothing more.

But if you want to imply I’m a racist and do your best to one-up just another BE reader, then that’s fine.

Rural Oregon? Yes, often very racist.

Portland, Eugene, Ashland, Bend? Pretty progressive and liberal.

This is also true in many other states in the union. Big city or funky small town vs. agrarian towns and cities away from the metropolises.

Portland Eugene Ashland and Bend is still sort of racist, but only in a self-righteous progressive way, and they tend to get less violent about it. As a side note Nate in all seriousness is the whitest dude I have ever seen. I bet no one here can surf the net and find a dude with skin more white than Nate.

Its easy to assume something of someone when you don’t know them. Nate has never been anything but class, in my opinion. Anderson has said and done many questionable things both in and out of the cage. He comes across most classy when he’s being filtered by ed soares…

Don’t get me wrong, Anderson is an amazing fighter- leaps and bounds beyond Sonnen. I’ll always be a fan of him as a fighter, and its easy to be cocky when you are at the top.

That being said, the racist angle is a weak way to defend Silva. Either that, or it was a great troll.

I know that he is just trying to get some hype because a win over Marquardt would put him in contention, but Sonnen just comes off as delusional and unintelligent. I don’t know why he verbally attacked Mark Coleman in another interview, and his beef with Anderson Silva derives from petty issues (pink shirts, , earrings, wearing your hat sideways?). I have to wonder if that whole thing that Sonnen said about Anderson now speaking English to people even though he can is even true. Hopefully, Nate Marquardt wins and maybe that will cause Sonnen to stop talking nonsense.

There are Asians outside Asia and America. Just because someone is from Brazil, or Mexico, or Peru, whatever, doesn’t mean they have their own race. Just like America, natives used to inhabit these countries, Europeans came and brought the slaves, and later on we got a bunch of Asians too. It is indeed true that AS could be correctly referred to as an African American. South America has as much claim to the word America as North America. However the point I was making is not related to AS voting for anyone republican or democrat. Hopefully it was obvious to most readers that when republican candidate for public office verbally attacks a black man (who frequently spends time in the U.S.) for frivolous reasons it does not help the party’s cause.

by MMAFAN FO SHO on Feb 3, 2010 3:23 PM EST up reply actions

Where is the documentation of the Republican party being associated with hate?

The republicans don’t really have economic philosophies. Corporate statism is what the republicans pushed through the Bush years. There are small sects of republicans that align with Austrian Economics, but they’re in the minority. Most want to bleed the economy dry with military spending and corporate giveaways…wait, the democrats are doing that right now too!

Maybe you should take out your pink glasses and look around. I’m sure where you live in Minas you can find poverty and people struggling really bad to survive.

I’ve been to quite a few places in the US and Europe (and São Paulo), and I can tell you that some of the places I’ve been it’s just as bad as some of the bad places in our country. And you should keep in mind that poor does not equal danger, I’ve been to favelas, I know what the reality is here and in quite a few places. by Orcus on Feb 3, 2010 4:12 PM EST up reply actions

Before that, if you wanted to make a major, expensive sci-fi blockbuster, you better have a top director attached. Think before ID you needed a Spielberg for Jurassic Park, Cameron for Terminator 2, or a Lucas, Lynch, Burton, or even Coppola. The studios didn’t finance $100 mil sci-fi blockbusters, unless a very talented director was attached. They would do crappy movies, and sci-fi movies, but they wouldn’t do big budgeted without someone who knew what he was doing. After ID, they realized it didn’t matter how crappy the filmmakers where, as long as the effects where good and the marketing team could market it, audiences would show up. Since that day we have been flooded with an endless stream of bad alien invasions, super heros, natural disasters, genetically engineered sharks and other crap from filmmakers who in the past would have been lucky working on some b-schlock. Independence Day was definitely a game changer.

by John Nash on Feb 3, 2010 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

that’s true, but can’t that be said of Brave Heart as well? It was very influential, I can’t count how many historic battle movies have come after that (not sure the correct English term for that type of movie).

by Orcus on Feb 3, 2010 5:55 PM EST up reply actions

Brave Heart did launch a parade of historical battle epics, but it was maybe 2 or 3 movie a years. Look at the two changes in the film industry ID wrought:
1) 6-10 big budgeted sci-fi, fantasy, disaster movies a year helmed but whatever jackass they could grab from film school or off a music video set.
2) the way in which advertising was used to market a feature, No longer was word of mouth, reviews, or the pic itself important to sell the movie. After ID the idea was you need a visual to run (the White House blowing up), and you needed to build up anticipation – having black helicopters run up and down beaches with ID4 flying behind them, black banners all over American cities proclaiming Independence Day. Everyone was asking “what happens Independence Day?” Studios learned at that point that the movies themselves don’t mean shit, it’s how you market them that matters.

dude, I’m not sure where you get that idea, police can enter a favela if the police wants to enter it, our government unfortunately is still behind in social projects to care about the favelas which is the reason we are still considered a developing nation. It has been left to the hoodlums to take care of the favelas, that does not mean there are crimes left and right, hoodlums wants the favelas to be safe for business. Now, there is a lot of confrontation between police and the hoodlums in the favelas, yes, but we’re talking about crimes within civilians here (at least I thought that was the case).

Who would of ever thought Chael Sonnen would generate treading comments. Now if he could apply his persona to his fights he could generates some hits on YouTube

No shit, eh? It’s amazing how such a boring fighter could instill so much interest in what he says.

You have to be the man... you have to be very, like, alpha male with her. You know? Decide what you do and everything. So, show her who's the boss, you know? - GSP

Well, half of the comments are a discussion about economic and social policy in Brazil, so I’m more inclined to give credit to BE members than to Sonnen.

Also, the other half are about whether or not Sonnen is a racist, which regardless of whether or not he is, has nothing to do with his comments, so I’m also inclined to give the much more dubious credit for that to BE members, too…

We need a "Chael Makes Asshole Comments" Category at this rate.

What a tool.

Don't believe a word I say, I don't train BJJ.

And that headshot looks like he’s waiting for someone to “Peter North” all over his face.

And he doesn’t even know how funny he is.

Anderson Silva would murk everyone in Chael Sonnen’s neighborhood before they even stepped out the door.

We're just a million little gods causin' rain storms, turning every good thing to rust.

Did’nt Anderson grow up in the bad side to town or something.
If i remember correctly, didnt he live with his aunt and uncle when he was a kid because hes parents could take care of him.

But then again this is the great Chael Sonnen, so nevermind.

Chael…he says a few words and he gets people talking like crazy about him! The guy is a self promotor at the expense of other fighters…just like a lot of fighters. Man’s just doing what he thinks he has to do…He knows if he beats Nate (I know, no one is giving him a chance) that it would set him up POSSIBLY for a shot at Anderson. Well Anderson Kinda picks and chooses his fights..not sure Anderson would care very much in fighting Chael…not cause he’s scared…there’s just no money in it. So Chael is probably hoping to piss him off…just in case he gets my ole Nate. I think Nate and Chael could be one of the best fights of the year.

Well I'd say Sonnen has succeeded—once again—at the hype game

Get trolled by Chael Sonnen—You’ll be glad you did!

I think Anderson Silva would be happy to leave Chael’s hillbilly heaven.

Keep firing Assholes!
