Should Iowa clean up MMA fighting?
"No one stopped 17-year-old Jerod Botts of Waverly from climbing into the cage for a mixed martial arts fight even though he was underage, didn't have a parent's permission and had never fought before. An experienced fighter beat him badly, leaving him with a broken nose, a cracked eye socket and vision damage."
"When 20-year-old Zach Kirk of Shenandoah was paralyzed from the neck down in an amateur fight, the promoter who staged the event didn't offer to pay medical expenses — and wasn't required by law to do so."
"Iowa is one of 15 states with no regulation of amateur mixed martial arts fights. Amateur fighting is illegal in six states. Other states have either regulation by state officials or oversight by a third-party sanctioning body."
"A bill to change Iowa's law has passed the Iowa Senate and is now before the Iowa House."

Of course they should
If states don’t force their commissions to get these things under control, they’ll just get worse. Granted, it shouldn’t be the government’s job to stop people from not doing what they need to do to be informed and not fight at 17 with no experience, but it would save a lot of grief and red tape if there were more in place to stop things like this from happening.
I agree that ammy MMA needs to be cleaned up, but I don’t have a problem with them letting guys under 18 fight. Karo Parisyan, Joe Stevenson, and many others turned PRO before their 18th birthday.
Amateur MMA
Is one hell of a snake pit here in the states. Third party sanctioning is the way to go in my opinion, simply because I’ve seen the ISKA do a fairly good job here in TN, and the other shows I’ve been to sanctioned by them (I’m presuming this is what we mean by third party sanctioning, yes?).
The scariest part is dealing with some of the sharks who promote fights. Theres only a handful of guys who are actually looking out for the fighters best interest, and improving the sport. If it’s not an honest promotion, it’ll usually be some joe blow gym trying to get their name out, and thats their number one priority. I’ve seen kids as young as 16 fight, and I’ve seen promoters help them get around the red tape just because the kid will put on an exciting fight.
And don’t even get me started on a promoter who owns a gym giving his fighters guys who shouldn’t even be in a cage.

Amateur MMA in the US is a complete f’n joke. Its an excuse for most promoters to run cage fights with little or no oversight and make oodles of money by not having to pay the guys fighting. The only attempt to bring structure to it was an absolute cash grab by a guy who is a scumbag promoter (California).
As more and more of these events take place, more and more fighters will end up crippled or dead and will add to the negative view a lot of people have of the sport.
This guy should be prosecuted and the UFC/Strikeforce/WEC should help push for it. It will send a clear strong unified message that this kind of nonsense isn’t acceptable.
Prosecuted for what though? No one in the story did anything wrong legally.

Without knowing the entire story
I guess you could start with some kind of Negligence. One kid was 17, most 17 year old kids can’t even wipe their own asses yet, let alone think of the consequences of their actions over the long term.
When you have these lower end promotions putting on fights, a strong commission becomes even more important for the fighters.
I'm sure he could be found liable civilly
Certainly some kind of tort was inflicted on the injured party.Ultimately, this promoter made money on an underaged (depending on IA’s age of majority) fighter. The UFC should do something before concerned moms get involved.they can do anything when riled up, for instance MADD.

As an Iowan and an MMA enthusiast...
I wholeheartedly agree for the new legislation to make amateur MMA safer.
It looks bad for our state and for MMA when these freak show events end up leaving people seriously hurt.
MMA is a sport, and amateur MMA is just the same, only at a lower level. These drunken asses that are stepping into cages and causing bad publicity for the sport are not atheletes. They are just idiots.
Amateur MMA should be held in the same regard as pro, just on a smaller scale.
Hopefully this new bill will clean up the mess before fear-based witch hunts start being conducted by desperate politicians or close minded “activist” types…

More about Zach Kirk
Can be found here.
(Shenandoah) — A Shenandoah ultimate fighter is now contending for use of his limbs. 20 year-old Zack Kirk was rushed to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha after being immobilized in a ‘take-down’ at Saturday night’s Mayhem Martial Arts fight at the National Guard Armory. His mother Diana tells KMA News his fifth vertebrae was crushed and his spinal chord damaged. She reports that after a three-hour surgery, he has some use of his arms after replacing the vertebrae with a bone from his hip. Monday’s M-R-I showed everything is lined up properly and there are no cuts in the spinal chord, but it did reflect chord damage. Diana believes miracles happen and says Zack is going to be one of them.
Kirk’s friend and fellow-fighter Joe Perkins tells KMA News it was a freak accident that could have happened in football or wrestling just as easily. Perkins explains that Kirk went for a take-down but his unnamed contender had his arms restrained, preventing Zack from breaking his fall with his arms. He was then rolled over irresponsive. Without realizing injury, the opponent dealt a blow or two before the referee halted the match. Perkins says after exchanging a few words with Kirk, the referee called for a stretcher and Kirk was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Cause people from a distance can't tell who is who -- Jay-Z
Read that the Kid was never asked his age. When the fight was over the ref asked if he was OK. He said “I think so” and then had to have his friends carry him to the car. There was no medical staff present.
Well…that’s what you get with unregulated events.

These people made a choice to enter these events(though I see a problem with a legal kid without parents permission.), while I see nothing wrong with better run amateur shows, I do see a problem having the government take charge. Government does nothing well.
I don’t really know how you can say that here when athletic commissions require things like doctors at the event and insurance.
The fighter made a choice, I would not fight if there was no insurance or a doctor(I would not fight if there was!) but they did.
Government does not do do things well, what about the judges and refs we all complain about? Of course that does not mean people can or should get away with fraud, if in those events it was implied or outright stated that there would be a doc and insurance then there is an issue. My biggest concern is just making the whole scene to expensive to put events on for, the cost of regulation.
I hate it when someone gets hurt and THEY made the decision to do what hurt them, then everyone says oh my things are out of control lets get the government to step in.
Do you believe I have the right to fight someone if they also consent to said fight and we are both sound of mind?
who is going to check that both people consent? who is going to check that they are both adults? who is going to check that they are both sound of mind? Who is going to make sure that the doctors and insurance are actually there if the promoter says they are there?
People agree to do things with other people all the time with out any one needing to check anything if something goes wrong you call the police. I caught the babysitter hitting my kid! I call the cops.
The fighters showing up and getting in the ring is enough, assuming they were forced if unrealistic. On the other hand being sound of mind is a harder one, but again people go skydiving, bungee jumping, play tackle football with friends, etc With out needing a psychology examine. Putting a person into a fight who is not sound of mind(i.e does not understand the danger) should be a crime, the person could not consent in that case. As for age, the promoter should legally find out there age using reasonable means, ie check there id(which can be faked, but again how is this the promoters fault).
The fighters themself should check for doctors, etc if they care. Go with proven promoters, people who have earned a good reputation. Other non government agency could also keep standard and endore those that keep them. Like underwriters labratory, a private group that keep product quality standards.
I am not against regulation, just doing it with the government. And if the government does do it. To allow non sanctioned fights to go on legally, more choice for the fighter.
And again I ask if I consent to fight someone who also consents can I fight them? Do I have to have a doctor nearby, how about a timekeeper or judges? Can I use my neighbors boxing ring? Can my neighbor tell people that were going to do some mma fighting and to come watch, bring your own beer and lawn chair?
If I get hurt should said neighbor pay my bills and pay for a government timekeeper, ref, etc.
